"Throttling" Internet Speed
Nov 20th, 2022 at 4:30pm

I'll be off the boards for a while, I suspect my satellite provider is "throttling the speed, which is a practice whereby they maintain normal speeds for some customers, at the expense of others when the provider runs short of something or other. Apparently, customers in the bush mean nothing to internet providers, we seem to be the ones getting our speed cut

Whereas Ebay used to be usable under almost any adverse condition in the past and up until a week ago, it is now so slow for me to use, I have to stop using it until I get things sorted out

Anything with images, as Ebay for example, has a lot of, takes several minutes to load each image, or may not load at all

OZpol is not too bad but it's no where near as fast as it used to be. All sites are extremely slow, some are slower than others ... I haven't experienced anything like it before

I've checked everything, but it seems I need to pay more money for a faster plan and go with a new provider. I'm on the cheapest plan at the moment, it's all I've ever needed, and has worked quite well up until now, not any more though, the speed is cactus, even on my brand new iMac with the latest operating system, plenty of memory and disc space ... and with cache and history deleted

Clearing the cache would make the web pages display even slower initially as the internet cache would need to refill the little files it uses first time back to frequently used sites.

I think it's a much bigger problem than my equipment or software. NBN is saying there's a minor fault nation wide with satellite internet .... I would call it a major problem, especially in my post code. I can tell when there's not much traffic, it speeds up a bit late at night. During the day it slows right down, but that's not the problem, it's something bigger

That's the problem.
You're only being allocated spare capacity.
The premium providers sell that off to cheaper carriers
at a budget price.
You wouldn't want to be in the middle of an internet banking transaction
and have it go down.

We're on FTTN with Telstra, and around 250m of copper pair.
Lately the speeds have been noticeably deteriorating, and
Telstra seem uninterested in doing anything about it, despite
my frequent complaints.  The last time the Telstra tech opened
up our street pit, it was full of water.

Today...

...

We're paying for 50Mbps download and 20Mbps upload, but
Telstra refuses to give us any rebate, so I've lodged a complaint
with the TIO.

The TIO will now force Telstra to lodge a complaint with the NBN Co.

And check out this...

Top 10 Countries with the fastest broadband speeds:

    Monaco - 261.82 Mbps
    Singapore - 255.83
    China - 254.70
    Romania - 232.17
    Switzerland - 229.96
    Denmark - 227.91
    Thailand - 225.17
    Chile - 217.60
    France - 214.04
    South Korea - 212.57

and...    Australia - 82.73

Mine is worse than yours GEoff, also with Telstra

Your speed test results
24.9Mbps
Time of the day
DOWNLOAD SPEED

Higher speeds give you a better experience for things like video streaming or internet browsing.

5.2Mbps
Time of the day
UPLOAD SPEED

Higher speeds help things like video calling, sharing large files and online gaming.

Been on FTTP with Telstra since September 2015.

Was on 25/5 until about 18 months ago when Telstra emailed me and said they were giving me a 6 month free trial of 50/20 and at the end of the 6 months they would contact me again and ask if I wanted to keep the 50/20 (presumably at a higher cost) or go back to my original 25/5.

18 months later and Telstra haven't contacted me again about my increased speed "6 month trial", I'm still on 50/20 and my bill is still the same every month.

Can't complain about that.  Cool

FTTP lucky you!

I wonder if they plan to expand that in any areas.

The new Labor Federal government is supposed to be gradually fixing the Liberal's NBN mess.

https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2022/10/nbn-upgrade-2022/

A list of the latest suburbs in each State to be upgraded is shown in that article.

Of course, it would have been faster and easier (and no doubt cheaper) if the whole thing had been done properly - FTTP for nearly everyone - in the first place like the ALP was planning to do before they lost the 2013 Federal election.

The only reason we got FTTP in 2015 was because our area had already been contracted for FTTP before Labor lost the 2013 election.

I'm in a rural area on fixed wireless. Ran a test this morning.  As it happens, today a technician is coming to install a new aerial that is supposed to improve the service. I will run another test after to see what ( if any) improvement there is.

Just tested mine - a bit weird:

37.7

Mbps download

9.90

Mbps upload

Seriously? Supposed to be a lot more download speed but surprised at the upload.

Mine is more useless today than yesterday, only just managed to renew a greenslip, but can't pay my Council rates. Ozpol took a while to load, about 10mins

The weather is ok, cloudy bright, not enough to slow my internet. I'll call my provider and see what they say about it. My modem is showing a solid illuminated blue ring, so I'm at a loss to know what's really going on

This speed test is from Speed Test.net ... a screen shot won't transfer to Ozpol so I'll type the figures ...

Download 0.08

Upload   0.08

That looks pretty slow to me. I'll change providers, see you on the other side
