i really believe that we are going to get a mildly effective vaccine if we are lucky.
look at our history with respiratory virus vaccine...awful.

there are still yearly outbreaks of mers in saudi and those dudes have lots of cash to develop a vaccine if it were possible.

secondly, the vaccines for sars when trialled on animals caused a certain not insignificant percentage to have an overwhelming immune complex response which killed the animal.

how could you justify that in a young person who is at little risk of covid.

so you would have to do extensive and prolonged safety trials..maybe 12 to 18 months.

thirdly, the main group that need protection are the elderly and infirm who always mount the worst response to a vaccine.

fourthly, this thing probably will mutate and then you may be back to square 1.

fifthly, lets say it does as well as fluvax (40 to 60 % effective).
that still leaves you , even in a small place like OZ, 12 million people with no immunity and often showing no symptoms so you will still be getting outbreaks, clusters, deaths...even with a vaccine.

sorry but i think a vaccine will help as will "flattening the curve' so if you get it you get a ventilator but the health officers need to be honest.

millions of australians are probably going to get this.

this fantasy from premiers in qld, SA and WA that they can make their state free of covid and keep it that way until we get a vaccine is a HOAX.

and they have now got the public so terrified of what is just another in a line of many many diseases that this will cause a massive disruption and no clear path forward.

dont be like those silly premiers talking vaccine, vaccine, vaccine.

it will slow things down a bit but at some stage we are going to have to get the trains andbuses back to capacity , reopen borders and resume life.

and there is no point delaying til some magic vaccine makes it really really safe....it most definitely will not

For relatively simple bugs they are much less demanding of 'proof'. I don't believe there is as any instant 'vaccine' for any viral impact.

At the moment some experts are very optimistic about a vaccine while others are pessimistic, but I think the pessimists fail to factor in the enormous effort being put in.

The effort that was put in to make vaccines for SARS1 and MERS is totally dwarfed in comparison to the research being but into Covid.
