Polynesian people get fat because they have a poor diet. There are videos out there that state that after WW2 ended, the GIs left cans of supplies behind that the locals started eating. The supplies became part of their diet in some way, in addition to their traditional diets. Over time, fast food was introduced to the South Pacific and obesity rates among Polynesians just skyrocketed.
You could cite the need to store a lot of fat to be able to do long journeys over the Pacific. But, I do not know of any obese marathon runners.
And how many fat Scandanavians do you know? I lived in a student accommodation, years ago. We had Swedish and German girls living in the units nearby. Their sunbaking on their back lawns, that I somehow noticed, meant that I saw that they had no signs of winter fat.
They don't have fast food. They have the same thing, made slowly, without the taste, and a few hours later than when they were supposed to have it ready.
Mutton flaps for example are popular in Tonga. It is cheaper than KFC. It's basically breast - the low quality end of ribs, very fatty. Usually fried with taro root, which is a bit like potato, but without the flavour or texture. Fish is a traditional food, but you are lucky to see anything approaching 1 foot long within swimming distance of the island.
KFC is a status symbol, but they mostly can't get it. People fill their carry-on luggage with it when flying home.
