Power Bank Portable Car Jump Starter

Power Bank Portable Car Jump Starter

These seem quite popular today.   [....look much easier than hooking up jumper leads, onto another vehicle]

Any advice on what to look for when buying ?

Some available, in Australia, on eBay, from around $60 now.

I will need to jump start a diesel ute.

I use an Itech 900A. Which works well on diesels. They have a new updated model 1000A from memory.

Do you really need to jump start that often it's a pain? You could go dual batteries if you go off road. Once one is discharged, you know exactly what you have in reserve.

The 900A and 1000A are lithium batteries. Very small footprint and very light.

No it is similar. It does say that one is not suitable for diesel engines.

That is only 600Amps peak current capacity.

I would just get a set of jumper leads, what happens if battery bank doesn't have enough charge because it has been sitting unused for a while?

If it needs frequent jump starting then battery is stuffed or didn't have enough cold cranking amps.

Deep discharges ( less than 50% charge) stuff Lead Acid batteries resulting in a much shorter life.

The battery in my Torana is over 20 years old still going strong because I drive it at least once a fortnight.

A friend in town has a Power Bank.....

1/ You can charge the power bank [off mains] overnight [if it is low].
They all seem to have an LCD display, which will show % of charge - just keep an eye on the charge level.
I live out of town, and my close neighbours are all getting to be old and infirm, so would rather not bother them for a jump start using cables [to another vehicle].

2/ I know to replace my battery when it is stuffed.   ...it is just that through a cold winter, an early morning start, can test an 'old' battery.
If my battery fails to start my diesel, i just need to start my ute to get into town to buy a new battery.

4/ My last ute battery lasted for 11 years [with frequent water level checks].
My current battery is about 7 yrs old.
I drive into town [charge my battery], at least a couple of times a week.

miketrees, Thanks for that post.
Sounds good!
It encourages me.

Setanta,
"Do you really need to jump start that often it's a pain?"
No.    I can't remember the last time i needed a cable jump start.

A friend in town has a two battery setup in his diesel ute.
But it looks like a lot of faffing about [cabling, and switching gear, and all].
That friend, is the one with a Power Bank now [as well].

If a Power Bank will help start my ute on a very cold morning, that will be sufficient.
I just need to start the ute, so i can get to town to replace the L/A battery.

To help Yadda I'd need to know the exact one he wants to buy.

People often forget about their jump start battery -
they just leave it in the boot for 6 months & let it self discharge -
and when they need it there's not enough charge.

The itech 900A has a 900 Amp peak.
the 1000A has a 1000Amp peak.
And now I see they have a 2000A with a 2000 Amp peak.

They are not only good for jump starting but can recharge mobile devices, run fridges etc.

They also recommend you discharge it every 3 months and recharge.

I discharge mine by running the camping fridge

I'm looking at something like this Bobby....

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/392248272365

In the specs, on the page.....

"This jump starter can start Gasoline car below 5.5L/Diesel car below 4.0L."

That would do me fine.

Looks OK - buy it.
The only thing I don't like are the skinny red & black wires -
they don't look thick enough to pass 400 amps.

You can make your own leads.Or buy the leads and attach to the clamps

https://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemVersion&item=123479108158&view=...

EC5 female + 12 AWG wire

or plugs only

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/5-Pairs-EC5-Banana-Plug-Female-Male-Bullet-Gold-Conn...

Strip the wires to length. Solder and make a jig to feed the cable through sideways. I used 20mm square tube about 50mm long and cut one side out to about 10mm all the way along.

It was a pain to fit into the holder until I used a pedestal drill and a 3.5mm bit inserted upside down to press it into the holder.

My Itech one came with 10AWG leads but I wanted others made.

I suggest he contact the vendor and ask the question.

Get one with sealed lead acid batteries and it will start anything and last for ever and like a car battery can be recharged countless times without losing capacity.

Lithium batteries steadily die with each recharge.

One I have is a Booster Pac  ES5000  12v 1500 peak amps. I have had it for years. recharge with a small trickle charger. A bit heavy but a goody.

Maxwell super capacitors used to start a car ! Still going strong after 3 years ! This is the same technology acquired by Tesla Wink

They don't.

They need a tow to the junk yard.

it is hilarious when a dangerous unsafe Tesla toy car gets a flat battery - the useless pile of junk is paralyzed.

because capacitors are much more efficient than batteries at storing or supplying energy so they are ideal for huge current dumps such as acceleration and regeneration. Tesla will most likely use them as a buffer between the motor/generator and batteries Wink

Yes they are. But you need a lot more of them as they are typically 2.7volt and low amperage.

Yeh low "amperage" that can turnover a V8 engine Cheesy LOL

That's why you need a lot of the petal. In series for about 16 volt and in parallel to provide the amperage. Wink

lastnail,

That YT was interesting, that guy, replacing a L/A vehicle battery, with a bank of capacitors.

Sufficient power available to start the vehicle engine.

Nice.

Just wondering, is there any danger of those capacitors overheating, being confined within that small container ?

Would some ventilation be useful ?

i went to his user channel.....

I don't use google. So does it explain all about this $12 battery?

Perhaps, perhaps not. I just thought I hadn't directed it specifically to you.

My apologies, I just assumed people would be clever enough to work that since yadda constantly says google such and such instead of providing a link, it would have been directed at him.

Lithium battery car starters aren't much chop because the lithium batteries lose some capacity every time you recharge them.

And if you try to start something too big like a 600HP diesel then the lithium battery will overheat and could explode into a fiery inferno.

On the drag strip one can meet 600HP diesel cars.

But BH you are just trying to go off on one of your tangential change the topic circular thingies.

The power-bank device.

I got one,      it looks exactly like the one mentioned here....
http://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1566027681/11#11

When it arrived, i put it on mains charge [as per instructions].

It was on a charge for about 3 hours, but i'm pretty sure it was already fully charged up, when it came.
[going by the LCD indicator.]

Today.....
Deep, deep in the woods, the temp here was below 0 C this morning, and i was expecting a 'groan' as my 7 year old battery turned over the motor of my diesel ute.

So i decided to do the start, with aid from the power-bank device.

And i was pleasantly surprised.

My ute motor was turned over strongly, and it started like it was the middle of a warm day.

It was cold! here, but there was no hesitation in strongly turning over the motor.

It was not a true test of this power-bank, ....which would be to start my diesel ute with a dead [or too weak to start] battery.

I can't work one thing out though.

Afterwards, and still now, the LCD indicator on the the power-bank, still shows a 100% charge.

After the start, was expecting the LCD indicator on the the power-bank, to at least be showing less than 100% ?

Anyway, it looks good.

Yadda's matchbox toy transport could be started with an energetic sneeze.

Yadda's power bank is a penis extender.

Juliar has been pushed off the road. Juliar should not have been taken off the blocks. He evidently can only propel himself downhill.

Hand cranking noises coming from Juliar again. Followed by jacking noises and creaking.

What sort of wankers need a jump starter device?

Yadda, Juliar, and lee. Sum of their IQs less than 50.

Juliar is still waiting for Yadda to work out where to connect the jumper lead clamps on Juliar's limo after detaching them from lee's testicles.

Grenny LarfTillUFart is just so dreary and boring. She is hardly worth winding up. She is no challenge. Classic Greeny - dumb and ignorant.
