Youliar can't wait for the libbos to rip us on hydrogen deals just like they did with LNP gas. How history repeats Sad

The going rate for a kilo of hydrogen in San Diego costs the 6kg capacity Mirai around $120 to fill; the same-size Corolla sedan petrol would cost $77 to fill at $1.40 per litre; and a Tesla S around $30 at 50 cents per Kw (and less at Tesla’s fixed Supercharger price of 35 cents/kW).

When LPG came out it was so cheap.
The Govt then added monster taxes to it
so that it's not worth the trouble.
Would the same happen with hydrogen?

Robert,

LPG or propane seemed a good catch cry at the time as it had lower emissions and there was huge supply and it was cheap compared to petrol.

Propane is a three-carbon alkane with the molecular formula C₃H₈. It is a gas at standard temperature and pressure, but compressible to a transportable liquid. A by-product of natural gas processing and petroleum refining, it is commonly used as a fuel. Propane is one of a group of liquefied petroleum gases.
Formula: C3H8
Molar mass: 44.1 g/mol
Boiling point: -42 °C
Density: 493 kg/m³
Melting point: -188 °C
IUPAC ID: Propane

But if you have ever driven an LPG conversion vehicle you would know that they can be a real problem after a while. A loss of power is noticeable. Plus the LPG cylinder in the boot.

The manufactured LPG vehicles like the Falcon were quite good.

But the REAL killer for LPG is the hybrid vehicles from Toyota which have better fuel consumption and are very popular for taxis.

A new problem for LPG only vehicles is that after taxis stopped using LPG service stations are pulling out their LPG bowsers as there is no market anymore.

What is LPG ?

And socko and his mates are waiting to do the same thing with hydrogen but they have overlooked EV's which can be charged up at home from FREE energy from rooftop solar Wink

Yes FREE energy socko !! You'd think the conseratives would be endorsing FREE energy from the sun the way they always talk about savings on electricity bills Cheesy LOL

Robert,

Mainly because Ford stopped making Falcons which were the main car used for taxis.

Then the taxis switched over to Toyota Camry Hybrids which use low octane petrol and are more economical than the LPG cars.

Now Toyota hybrids are very popular for city driving where there is lots of slowing and stopping to recharge the battery.

The Camrys are a bit more normal than the Prius.

Out on the highway on long runs the hybrids are no good because with no slowing or stopping the battery goes flat and the engine has to lug the weight of the car and the weight of the passengers and the weight of the heavy flat battery and try to recharge the flat battery. Hence a Prius slows right down.

Now with service stations getting rid of their LPG pumps people who have an LPG only car are getting a bit stressed trying to find a LPG service station.

Maybe they will convert LPG to HYDROGEN in the future when oil gets scarce. Today methane is used to get HYDROGEN.

I think you'll find that the LPG was too
expensive after the mega taxes were
added to the price.

Partly but THE main reason was the end of the Falcon Cars when FORD left Australia.

But back to the HYDROGEN REVOLUTION as Canberra girds its loins.

How Australia Is Looking to Develop a Hydrogen Economy. Policymakers see hydrogen as a key carrier for exporting renewable energy.

Could hydrogen become Australia's next export industry?  Photo Credit: Shutterstock

Australia’s first hydrogen test station opened this month amid a wider strategy to use gas as a storage medium for renewable energy.

The station, established by energy provider Evoenergy and the Canberra Institute of Technology at a CIT facility in Fyshwick, a retail and light industry suburb on Canberra’s outskirts, is designed to test the use of pure hydrogen in existing gas infrastructure.

The test results will be used to inform future implementation of hydrogen in the Australian Capital Territory and the rest of the country, CIT said in a press release.

“As this new energy source is set to replace gas, our apprentice plumbers will be trained in how hydrogen will be distributed and connected to homes,” it said.

In November 2017, the Hydrogen Council, a global coalition, issued a report claiming hydrogen could cover 18 percent of the world’s final energy demand by 2050, creating a USD $2.5 trillion industry and 30 million jobs. Australia wants a piece of that action.

The export potential is driving most of the interest in renewable hydrogen development in Australia.

As soon as the looney Greenies like Tweedledee smell HYDROGEN they go berserk.

When will ScoMo swing the subsidy away from the renewable rubbish onto the HYDROGEN FUTURE FUEL ?

The mere whiff of HYDROGEN sends these loony Greenies into orbit.

Hydrogen Fueling Station Explodes: Toyota & Hyundai Halt Fuel Cell Car Sales

Blast was so big it set off airbags in nearby cars.

A hydrogen refueling station exploded and stood in flames yesterday in Sandvika, Norway, which could make June 10, 2019 the day when the perception about hydrogen stations and hydrogen fuel cell cars, in general, will forever change.
According to reports from the Uno-X station, the explosion was huge. It triggered airbags in nearby cars and caused the necessity to close off the busy E18 and E16 intersection. A safety zone of 500 meters was recommended by the fire service.

"“It is probably a tank that has exploded at the hydrogen station next to the police station at Kjorbo,” The Fire Services tells the local newspaper Budstikka."
"“E18 near the site is closed in both directions due to the danger of explosion. The E16 at the Bjornegarden tunnel in Barum is closed for the same reason,” The Road Traffic Central tweets Tweets."

The cause of the explosion is not yet known as it needs to be investigated.

Because of that, Uno-X closed its two other stations with hydrogen in Norway, while carmakers - Toyota and Hyundai - temporarily stopped sales of FCVs (well, only a few per month were usually sold anyway). Owners of FCVs are expected to get loaner cars.

Taking into consideration how few hydrogen refueling stations are installed around the world, with this explosion, the average number of explosions per station will probably be orders of magnitude higher than for any other fuel. Not a good thing if you intend to promote FCVs.
We were often criticizing hydrogen fuel cell cars as a poor alternative for all-electric, because of low energy efficiency, high cost and lack of refueling infrastructure. As the charging times decreased in new BEVs thanks to ultra-fast chargers and the range on a single charge increased, it seemed that FCVs will never have a chance to take off. Any issues with safety (especially if repeated) only adds to the challenge.

Just last week a Hydrogen Plant in Sanfracisco exploded and stopped hydrogen supply there, now this...

The explosion set off airbags in surrounding areas, just lucky no one was refilling.......Hydrogen is a highly flammable liquid under immense pressure (10,000psi)..... Wink
