London is cleaning up its dirty air and we are....
May 24th, 2019 at 8:59pm

No chance you'll see that happening here under scumo and his crooked coal mates running the show. Not one charging station for fear of upsetting poor tradies that may have to change over to an electric drive train one day. Instead we all get to breath in each others dirty tail pipe emission whilst stuck in over populated traffic jams Sad

Quote:
London is cleaning up its dirty air but what about other cities?

Cities beset by illegal levels of dirty air will look to London this week, as it introduces the first stage of a major anti-pollution scheme.

The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is designed to clean up the UK capital’s air, which research released last week suggested has caused more than 4000 hospital admissions over the past three years by aggravating Londoners’ asthma. It aims to reduce levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), an invisible but toxic gas produced by some cars.

About 100,000 vehicles enter central London every day. From Monday, drivers doing this will have to pay a daily fee of £12.50 if their car doesn’t meet certain emissions standards. That will typically mean any diesels older than 2015 and petrol models pre-2005.

A much more significant step comes in October 2021, when the zone will be expanded to an area 28 times the size, with 1.4 million people living in it.

London’s scheme is considered genuinely world-leading. “The ULEZ is the most ambitious emission control scheme in any megacity. The spotlight is on it, as hundreds of other cities struggle with the urban pollution,” says Frank Kelly at King’s College London.

Authorities say the zone is about improving public health, not revenue, and admit set-up costs mean they will probably lose money in the first five years.

Clear the air
So what will the impact be? Taken together with steps to clean up buses and taxis, the city is expected to become fully compliant with legal limits on NO2 by 2025.

Research has suggested that without such measures, based on the rate of decline in NO2 levels between 2010 and 2016, that milestone would have taken 193 years to reach.

City hall officials argue that knowing the ULEZ is coming has already had an impact, saying that the number of compliant vehicles entering central London in the past two years has grown from 40,184 to 55,457. Still, that change could have happened naturally as people get rid of older cars, without the stick of the looming charge.

There should be fewer cars in central London too, with an expected 5 per cent reduction in vehicles in the first year, as some drivers opt for alternatives such as walking, cycling and public transport. There are limits to what the zone will do, however, because even electric vehicles still generate particulate pollution as their tyres break down.

Read more: Does air pollution really kill nearly 9 million people each year?
One of the ULEZ’s biggest repercussions could be to spur action by other towns and cities in the UK. While some, such as Nottingham and Derby, have already opted against a clean air zone, others such as Birmingham are pushing ahead with one that would cover private passenger cars.

The technology used to enforce the zone – cameras and number-plate recognition – is likely to be similar for other cities, says David Carslaw of consultancy firm Ricardo Energy and Environment, although London has the advantage of existing infrastructure used to charge for car access.

The scheme’s largest impact may be creating political space to argue for charging drivers on health grounds. The difficulty will be that although Londoners have good access to public transport, many other cities are more car-dependent.

“It will be important that London can show that the pain it bears of such schemes results in a tangible improvement in air quality,” says Kelly.

It also isn't the CBD.

Perhaps you better buy your EV.

https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/cars-continue-to-rule-melbourne-road...

Melburnians are still addicted to their cars, with new Census data revealing that about three quarters of workers are driving to work.
The number of commuters across all forms of transport in Melbourne's greater city has increased by 182,000 people, or 11 per cent since 2011.

SO it looks like around 140,000 people a day using cars....

Maybe you can find better figures Lee ?Wink

It's business as usual for Melbournians. The way they drive their fossil fool shitheaps around it's like they have never heard of GHG problems Sad And the stopping and starting of the clunkers in all of these new cars is just so comical to watch as soon as you see them put the brakes on. What a piece of sh.t kludged technology that is. The sort of stupid hare brained idea a liberal supporter like lee or socko would come up with. Cheesy LOL

Well let's see the mantra is "they don't do more than an average 50KM/day".

The Nissan Leaf is about $50k. That should be affordable for an "international business man". And that's new.

The Hyundai Ioniq at about $41k. new.

the leaf 2 hasn't been released in Australia yet Lee...… it is said to be about $50,000 as well.
The Ioniq is about $50,000 on road , you might be thinking of the hybrid..... no Second hand of them yet either, there have only been a a few sold so far and just not many in AUs yet because of Battery restraints....
https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/hyundai/ioniq/electric-elite-badge/

The both have a bit over 200km's of range.
For $60,000 there is aslo the Hyndai Kona with 400km's of range....
The Tesla 3 is being made for right hand drive now and should be in Aus by the end of the year and be about $50,000 - $60,000 with 450 km's of range.
In a few years there will be second hand cars available, then us poorer people should be able to afford them.
So if unless you have $50,000 to spend it's still not a option Smiley

don't worry china is gearing up big time in EV production and will flood the market with low cost EV's that even you can afford. They are just waiting for scumo and his crew to get kicked out and replaced by a progressive left government to encourage the up take of EV's along with a decent charging infrastructure Wink

a car with 400km's of range will have around 1500 FULL changes, or equivalent  partial charges, so 400 x 1500 is 600,000 km's before the battery should give out, the car will fall apart before the battery Lee Smiley
I noticed Hyundai give 160km 8 year warrantee, some give unlimited 10 year ones.....
Like any second-hand car, when the warrantee is out you risk major bills if things go wrong
I know Tesla are saying they can replace sections of their batteries for a few thousand dollars, but the batteries should last 800,000km's then MIGHT need replacing...

That's assuming the batteries don't fail.

"Your EV's battery life can be impacted negatively in several ways:

High temperatures. Operating an EV in high temperatures can degrade the battery. Additionally, parking an EV in the sun for long periods of time can have similar degradation effects.
Overcharging/high voltages. Charging an EV beyond its voltage limit can cause internal resistance in the battery. Most batteries have built-in battery management systems (BMS), so overcharging is rarely an issue, but it is good practice to not charge your battery right up to 100% when possible.
Deep discharges/low voltages. Draining most of a battery’s capacity frequently, or completely draining an EV battery, reduces battery capacity over time.
High discharges or charge current. Pulling too much current from a battery over a certain amount of time can have detrimental effects on battery life. When possible, avoid aggressive driving patterns that might pull high amounts of current from your battery all at once.
All EV batteries will degrade over time, but avoiding the above situations can help you maximize your EV battery life."

"For example, the Nissan Leaf has a range of 107 miles brand new, and the Tesla Model S has a range of 265 miles. Driving 50 miles on one charge would use about 47 percent of the Leaf’s battery capacity, and only about 19 percent of the Tesla’s capacity. Thus, commuting on the Leaf represents a much deeper discharge than a higher capacity car like a Tesla.

Deeper discharges lead to more rapid battery degradation. It’s important to make sure the warranty you receive will cover your driving habits, especially for those who want a lower range vehicle. For more information about EV range, check out EnergySage’s overview of ranges for popular electric cars.

Regardless of which EV you decide to purchase, it is essential to talk with the manufacturer and verify the warranty you will be receiving. Especially with such an expensive part of your new vehicle on the line, it is always a good idea to confirm the specifics in the rare case that your vehicle’s battery does end up degrading rapidly."

yes and when you buy a Normal second hand car you are assuming the gearbox doesn't blow up, the diff doesn't blow up, the electrics don't blow up, the motor doesn't blow up, all these are viable risks...... Wink

https://insideevs.com/news/351314/nissan-leaf-battery-longevity/
Nissan keeps a close tab on battery degradation and overall charging patterns of its fleet of over 400,000 LEAFs on the road today. While many people continue to discount Nissan for its lack of active thermal management for its batteries, the automaker's data is compelling.

Recent Nissan battery life data suggests that the battery itself may last some 10-12 years beyond the life of the car. The company sees the LEAF's reasonable life at about 10 years. Managing director of Renault-Nissan Energy Services Francisco Carranza reveals that the batteries in those cars seem to have a 22-year life span.

As lithium batteries in EV's is a fairly new tech as well, they reliability of these battery pack will only become better .
As with any Seconhand vehical if it is prone to pricey repairs it just wont sell, just like most Jeeps

In the end the market will decide if used EV's are any good:) Wink

Batteries tend not to "break down"; they fail. And that failure is a certainty. The timing is not.

And if you don't spend a singles cent on a clunker which one is guaranteed to fail first ?

And according to this they will most likely outlast any clunker even after spending a packet on servicing a clunker.

You tell us then and then compare with how much is spent on clunkers each year to stop them from failing ?

Nothing is spent on the batteries. They are a sealed unit.

https://insideevs.com/news/351816/used-ev-prices-rise-as-demand-outstrips-supply...

Prices of second-hand electric and hybrid vehicles are soaring as demand outstrips supply, according to one of the country’s largest used-car marketplaces.

Auto Trader says electric vehicles - also known as EVs - are rocketing in value, with prices growing 11 percent. In contrast, the average price growth rate for all vehicles has slowed to 1.5 percent - the lowest rate for almost two years.

Well second hand car buyers in England are not to worried about the batteries, or these car's wouldn't be in demand and so expensive . Good News for new EV buyers as it looks like the trade in value will be good for them. Wink

From the link -

"The industry average for all used cars is 42.2 days.
iSeeCars - Tesla Model S is the Fastest-Selling Used Car in Its Class

Yep really affordable EV's. Wink

So 5-10 are moving slower than average.

Amazing how they use average prices.

You can get a Renault for about £7,000 but the average price is £21,560. Which means, seeing as the average drops by two thirds from a Tesla, that there are far cheaper EV's on the market, yet they didn't include them.

That's right. And links generally go to somewhere that confirms what they are saying.

Like links to a scientific paper that newspapers comment on. Wink

The link explicitly said - "second hand electric".

so the highlight is a link to a article about Tesla S secondhand cars selling faster than other luxury cars and holding their value...…. ummm I think that comfirms that EV second hand cars have high demand...

are you saying the article has nothing to do with a Electric vehicles high demand ?

if a used luxury car goes off the lots quicker than any other luxury vehicle doesn't that indicate high demand

How else could they show the Tesla having high demand, unless they showed how fast it's competitors sold ?
Maybe you got confused because you only pasted half the sentence...Prices of second-hand electric and hybrid vehicles  Wink
