Actually hybrids go well while the battery is OK but start to sputter when the battery is on its last legs.

Out on a long trip on the freeway is judgement day for a hybrid as after the battery goes flat all that is left is the little petrol engine which has then to lug the flat heavy battery as well as the passengers.

Rumor is that the Prius conks out like this on the highway.

Round town hybrids are good as there is lots of slowing and braking to recharge the battery.

With an all electric heap all that is left when the battery goes flat is a very expensive tow.

Thats not how they work on the open road though. Hybrids essentially aid in the acceleration phase where you use the most petrol, out on the freeway, you don't use as much fuel so the hybrid doesn't need to work.

Plus overall the prius is only about 100 kilos heavier than the Corolla.

Then the little motor has to move the car PLUS the weight of the heavy flat battery PLUS the passengers PLUS try to recharge the flat battery.

That's why the little Prius is a slag on the highway.

The Prius Prime has an EPA-rated combined fuel economy in hybrid mode of 54 mpg‑US (4.4 L/100 km; 65 mpg‑imp), 55 mpg‑US (4.3 L/100 km; 66 mpg‑imp) in city driving, and 53 mpg‑US (4.4 L/100 km; 64 mpg‑imp) in highway. Only the Prius Eco has a higher EPA-rated fuel economy rating in hybrid mode.
