Melbourne’s big freeze: 50-year record broken
Aug 29th, 2018 at 7:19am

Quote:
Temperatures have fallen below zero across much of Melbourne as our freezing end to winter intensifies.

The CBD has had its equal-coldest morning since June last year, dropping to 0.8° about 6am.

But things are more dramatic at Melbourne Airport where the minimum of -1.9° — the coldest late-winter morning in more than 50 years, according to the weather bureau — has forced ground staff to de-frost plans at Tullamarine.

Elsewhere around Melbourne:

Coldstream: -3.6°
Viewbank: -2.4°
Scoresby: -2.1°
Brighton: 0°

Meanwhile in Perth...

Quote:
Roofs blown off and Rottnest ferries cancelled as Perth nears wettest August on record

Rain has again battered parts of Perth today, ripping off roofs and cancelling ferries to and from Rottnest - as we inch towards the wettest August on record.

With 10mm falling overnight in the city, and a further 9.2mm throughout the day, Perth has now recorded 165.8mm this month.

It makes it our wettest August since 2013 (with 167.4mm), but with more rain expected in the next few days we’re on course to surpass the wettest on record, of 175.6mm, which came in 2004.

So, while winter might almost be over it’s not going away quietly, especially for those in coastal suburbs this morning.

Mindarie grandmother Sharon Barnes lost her entire roof when strong winds hit early today.

“It was just a big crash, bang and then a woosh - and you could hear it - like it just sucked everything out of the room,” she told 7 News Perth.

SES crews were busy - with three other homes in the Mindarie estate hit.

A partially finished second storey was also ripped off - and heavy metal carried metres down the street.

A stormy day for WA has caused damage along the coast.
0:48 | 7 News Perth

A stormy day for WA has caused damage along the coast.

For those in Rottnest ferries have been cancelled for the remainder of today and tomorrow, leaving many having to arrange accommodation for an additional night.

With a six metre swell forecast, the conditions have been deemed too dangerous for Rottnest Fast Ferries. Rottnest Express won't run either.

If you had booked to go, contact the companies directly to discuss your options.

Fourteen rooms were due to check out tomorrow but the Rottnest Island Authority says they'll be looked after.

Eleven groups of people were meant to be check in tomorrow. They can reschedule or get a refund.

The damaging winds and cancelled ferries are all due to another strong cold front - something we've seen a lot of this winter.

“They've come through at steady progressive rates - we've seen front after front through June, July and indeed August as well," the Bureau of Meterology’s Neil Bennett said.

“It was very, very chilly a couple of weekends ago - some of the coldest days we've seen for a long time."

So what can Perth expect this Spring?

According to Mr Bennett our days and our nights are expected to be warmer than normal and we're also likely to get less rain.

“It's looking good - but then again mother nature always has a little trick up her sleeve - so we just have to wait and see," he said.

funny how they always stick to the predictions of "warmer" and "Less Rain"

then a few months later.... record rains, snow and cold temperatures...

but no one goes back and calls out these dud predictions...

Of course it is cold because we are in an 11 year Global Cooling Cycle which is being controlled by the low sunspot activity in the sun.

Eventually a Global Warming 11 year cycle will take over.

The biggest concern in a Global Cooling cycle is that it can lead to a mini ice age as has happened in the past.

and essential to life on earth CO2 has absolutely nothing to do with any of this.

Good old ordinary water vapor is by far the major impact on heat entering and leaving the earth.

What a let down for the naive dumb Greeny types proudly displaying their GROSS IGNORANCE.

Nobody ever said the global warming means that no other weather or climate events are possible ???

It would be foolish to do so just as it is foolish to claim that an event outside of a carbon dioxide influence has a meaning which it doesn't.

The current cooling event we have been experiencing really has nothing to say about the impact of carbon dioxide just because carbon dioxide is not driving this event.

Saturday 15th September 2018 was - a few days ago -
was very cold in Melbourne.
I think the temperature in the morning was 4 degrees & 85% humidity.
It was back to winter temperatures.
I had a T shirt, a brushed cotton shirt, 2 jumpers,
a beanie & a scarf and I was still cold, even inside.
I was at a friend's place for a while & their gas heater had broken down.
They were sitting on the couch with blankets over them.

Is this really global warming in spring?

We did get a hot day on the Friday, the day before that - it reached 24 degrees & was great.

Some people say that. I don't. A hot day is still just weather.

I lived in Melbourne nearly all of my life up until 6 years ago. It's no revelation to me that it gets cold in winter and that cold weather can extend into early spring. Do I think it's a sign of global cooling? No, because you can't use the temperatures of a single city during a period when cold weather is expected to make a unbiased judgement as to whether or not global average temperatures are increasing or decreasing.

Anyway, the data up until 2014 indicates an upward trend:

1. Where was Melbourne Regional Office located?

Seems it was i Latrobe St

"The existing Melbourne observation site, located at the Royal Society of Victoria in Latrobe Street, has been operating since 1908"

http://www.bom.gov.au/weather-services/announcements/vic/melb-olympic-park2013.s...

"Tuesday 9 December 2014 will mark the 'passing of the baton' as, after 106 years in operation, the station on La Trobe Street in Melbourne will be replaced by Melbourne (Olympic Park) as the official weather observation and forecast location for the city of Melbourne.

The official record of weather observations for Melbourne extends back to 1855, with a few breaks. It draws on observations from several locations, including Flagstaff Gardens (1858-1863), the Melbourne Observatory at the Botanic Gardens (1863-1908) and the Royal Society of Victoria on La Trobe Street (1908-2014).

The effects of urbanisation have become increasingly visible in the 106 years of data at La Trobe Street. Wind readings progressively deteriorated over the years, due to obstruction by buildings constructed around the city, and were finally switched off in 2009."

http://www.bom.gov.au/weather-services/announcements/vic/latrobe-site-closure.sh...

2. What effects of UHI? Has Melbourne grown since 1910? Vehicle traffic?

It is interesting that there are statistics from 1860's when apparently it didn't open until 1908. But apparently using mixed station data is good enough for government work.

Wind readings deteriorated? Hmm. I wonder what that did to temperature?

My car was all frosted up this morning -
I don't remember this ever in September.

Frosty morning in southeastern Australia

Ben Domensino, Thursday September 20, 2018 - 12:52 EST

Parts of Victoria and Tasmania registered their lowest September temperatures in several years this morning as widespread frost affected southeastern Australia.

Cool air lingering underneath a high pressure system caused temperatures to drop seven to eight degrees below average in parts of Australia's southeast on Thursday.

Victoria's Hopetoun dipped to minus 2.8 degrees early this morning, which was its lowest September temperature in seven years.

In Tasmania, Fingal had its coldest September morning in five years after reaching a low of minus 4.4 degrees shortly before 6:30am.

Melburnians awoke to a nippy start as the mercury dipped to 3.8 degrees. While there was a lower temperature recorded earlier this month, this was the city's coldest start this late in the year for 15 years.

Temperatures were also cold enough for frost this morning in parts of southern NSW, the ACT and SA's eastern inland. Canberra reached -2.9 degrees, which is the city's coldest start so far this spring.

Friday morning will be slightly warmer for most of southeastern Australia, although frost is likely to spread further north along the ranges of NSW.

It's been very cold,
it looks like David DuByne and Robert Felix have underestimated how cold it would get.

We did get a few hot days last summer but
we definitely didn't get 3 or 4 days in a row of over 40 degrees.
Hopefully this summer will be mild.

B Horsey,

And just to help BH with his confusion - weather applies to short time cycles whereas climate refers to long term cycles BUT Australian vernacular often uses the words interchangeably eg "What's the weather like in New Guinea ?" meaning what is the climate like there.

EVERYONE knows that Weather ONLY applies to COLD WEATHER and Climate ONLY applies to HOT WEATHER. (According to the Greenies).

But BOTH weather AND Climate follow well established cycles.

Think El Nino and La Nina weather cycles that regularly affect North Queensland and bleach the northern end of the Great Barrier Reef.

And Climate has been following roughly 11 year cycles controlled by sunspot activity for thousands of years.

At times the cool climate cycles have down turned to become an ice age. The Thames River once froze over.

At present Australia is experiencing a COOL Climate Cycle which will last for about 11 years until the sunspot activity picks up.

In the past, evidence of sunspot activity controlling climate in times gone by has been documented.

To repeat - the Greenies' Global Warming bulldust is just one GIGANTIC HOAX and is nothing more than a UN SCAM to try to transfer money from developed nations to poorer nations.

More great evidence for a mini ice age:

http://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/late-season-chill-grips-southeastern-australi...]

Late-season chill grips southeastern Australia

Ben Domensino, Tuesday September 25, 2018 - 09:24 EST

It feels like spring hasn't started in parts of southeastern Australia, with some places registering their lowest September temperatures in years during the last couple of mornings.

A cold air mass combined with clear skies and light winds is producing unusually cold mornings in parts of South Australia, Victoria, NSW and the ACT this week.

Despite being the first month of spring, Victoria's Nhill Airport registered its lowest temperature in three years on Tuesday morning, dropping to minus 1.2 degrees just before 6am. This was also the coldest September night in more than 15 years.

Elsewhere, South Australia's Hindmarsh (4.3C) experienced its coldest morning this late in the year for 15 years on Tuesday, while Coldstream (-0.2C) in Victoria and Sheffield (-0.5C) in Tasmania had their coldest mornings this late in the year since 2010.

On Monday, Australia's highest weather station, Thredbo Top Station, dropped to a numbing minus 9.7 degrees. This was Australia's lowest September temperature in five years. Mount Hotham's minus eight on 16th September was also Victoria's lowest temperature for the month since 2013.

The lack of rain in recent months is likely to have contributed to this late-season chill. Overnight cooling is enhanced when the air is dry and skies are clear.
