Millions of feral pigs will be culled in the far north in an effort to protect endangered turtle species from the invasive pest.

The pigs will be shot poisoned and trapped under an ambitious plan announced yesteday by Queensland national parks minister.

A total of $7 million was pledged in what ministers said could be a 4 year war on Pigs that feast on turtle eggs along the coast.

There are an estimated 23.5 million feral pigs in Australia, with up to 90 per cent of turtle nests lost to predation in some areas along the Queensland coast.

I dont agree with trapping and poisoning, those methods do not discriminate in which species they kill and the animals die a slow horrible death.

A government contract aerial shooter with a category D license has to double tap a pig with a minimum of a  308 winchester caliber semi auto,a category D license is difficult to acquire as you need evidence of contracts to shoot along with payment details from accountants and letters from solicitor before getting a category D license.

Amateur hunters are restricted to bolt action single shot rifles,if they miss with a head shot and blow the lower jaw off the animal can run away while they cycle the bolt action and then take aim for a second shot, the animal will probably starve to death because the government prevents amateur hunters from having a semi auto where they could get a rapid second shot or even third in without taking their sight from the animal.

Our gun laws changed in 1996 punishing all responsible firearm owners with a form of collective punishment because of a madman with  documented mental health issues.

Being a cynic, i suspect that the atrocity committed by Martin Bryant was a 'happy circumstance' for some in our community, social 'progressives' who were waiting for a good excuse to make firearm ownership much more difficult, and enact legislation to effectively disarm many/most Australian citizens.

After 1996, i lost two 12g's and a 22.

p.s.
Personally, i believe that everyone over the age of say, 25 years old, who has never had a drink driving, or [illicit] drug use conviction, or, a criminal conviction [in the last 20 years], should be permitted to own, and keep a firearm in their own home, for the protection of themselves, and their property.

Which is just reflecting good Australian values.     Wink

Every Man Should Have A Rifle, Henry Lawson

Quote:

Australia could easily deter any potential invader, AND, solve 99% of all violent crime within our borders, imo.

How?

Identify those citizens who,
1/ are over 25 years of age,
AND,
2/ have no convictions for violent crime [in the last 15-20 years],
AND,
3/ have no drink driving, or drug use convictions [in the last 15-20 years].

Allow these people, IF THEY WISH TO, to own firearms for the defence of their life and property.
And allow ANY property holder to kill, *anyone* [with a clear violent intent] who entered their property uninvited.
AND, allow a mandatory death sentence for those who are convicted of committing a violent crime, using a firearm.

Australia would become a safe [low violent crime] *armed society*, imo.
And any potential invader would consider an armed citizenry, as a serious deterrent to invasion.

???

For such a circumstance [political environment] though to be realised, pollies would have to trust their citizens, i.e. be prepared to give real and tangible political power to their citizens.

But that is not going to happen.

We, none of us, live in a real democracy.

'Democracy' 'happens' effectively, every election day, for just that one day - where we elect cheats and liars to govern over us for another electoral period!

[How can politicians be made to be more accountable for their management of the nation, i.e. on a much shorter time-scale than the period between two election dates ?]

Greens call on NSW government for tougher hunting laws

Footage of the aftermath of illegal hunting activities has been released as the Greens call on the NSW government for tougher hunting laws.

Six wild brumbies were shot dead within a week of the nsw government reopening forests to hunters.

Brumbies are not an approved game animal and this incident has sparked concerns of the danger of irresponsible hunters.

davidshoebridge.org.au/2014/02/21/greens-call-on-nsw-government-for-tougher-hunt...

The Green anti gun bigots are telling lies again.

Brumbies are a feral animal that are targeted by professional shooters with aerial culling.
In post #21  i linked the rules for aerial culling by the Northern territory government which states brumbies are a feral pest, the NSW government also lists brumbies as a feral pest.
You are supposed to use a 308w with 165 grain full metal jacket ammo when shooting them if you are following government guidelines for aerial culling for wild horses.

Some property owners catch brumbies and use them, on private property you need the property owners permission to shoot wild brumbies.

The greens are quite happy in making feral pests a protected species, in my opinion i think it should be a criminal offence to release non native species into the wild.

The Greens dont appear to care about the environment, the greens are like a watermelon-green on the outside and commie red to the core.

Freediver- What is the sustainability party policy on shooting feral pests and the penalty for releasing non native species into the wild?

Feral pests should be shot. We should encourage the meat industry for feral goat, camel, pig, horse etc.

Not sure about penalty for releasing an animal. If it is one that is not already present, you should get a big punishment. If it is just someone letting their cat out the door, there is not a whole lot you can do about it.

There is a anti vilification petition which resulted from Greens senator David Shoebridge demonising law abiding firearm owners.
David is a hypocrite when he claims shooters have a culture of booze and drugs, the greens want to decriminalise drugs.
He calls shooters weekend warriors and thrill killers doing bloodsports, he is totally ignorant of the fact many shooters are target shooters which is an olympic sport.
He has overstepped the boundaries of decency many times
Petition here-
www.huntersunify.com/index.php

There is another petition here which i think is reasonable i have signed it.

The Firearm laws that were imposed after Port Arthur, were a rushed, ill considered, overly prescriptive,a knee jerk reaction.

The laws have not worked.See peer reviewed research-

A professional shooter who does aerial culling cannot take a Category C or D firearm to a shooting range they are not allowed, i think Professional shooters should be allowed to take category C and D firearms to firing ranges for practice and to make sure the sights are dialed in.

It's about time the government cracked down on those who are unlicensed and using unregistered firearms, they should remove the presumption of bail for these people and not allow firearm offences to be served concurrently with crimial offences, ie the punishment for the firearm offence commences when the criminal offence has been served.

The green senator David Shoebridge  is a liar and anti gun bigot.

Quote:
Police records obtained by the greens confirm handguns have been used in 90% of drive by shootings in Sydney and in almost every case the handgun was a semi auto pistol.

The government needs to stare down the pro gun lobby and reverse this trend by banning private ownership of semi auto handguns Mr Shoebridge said

It's time the Premier called on the Prime minister to develop a national agreement to prevent handgun crime which must include banning the importation and private ownership of all semi auto handguns.

All the research shows that the prime source for illegal handguns is the growing market for legal guns  and the government has done nothing to address this.
davidshoebridge.org.au/2012/04/17/new-figures-confirm-rampant-handgun-use-in-dri...

How does taking guns away from law abiding firearm owners prevent criminals from using them?

The anti gun bigots are blaming law abiding firearm owners for the increase in criminals with firearms, the greens are totally clueless about firearms they blame law abiding firearm owners for everything so they can appear to be doing something.

Quote:
Customs officials have conceded a huge haul of illegally imported handguns in Sydney has exposed vulnerabilities in their systems.

Police pounced on a syndicate and arrested 4 people in Sydney.
They believe the ring has imported between 160-220 Glock pistols by air freight since last year, including some linked to recent Sydney shootings.

Customs and Border protection chief Michael Carmody says the case shows procedures need to be changed
Last year we detected about 2000 illegal handguns, accessories and the like,I think the issue with this is that increasingly the methods are sophisticated.

Police say they have so far traced one of the imported guns to a shooting in Wiley park and another to an organised crime figure.

Another alleged ringleader,27 year old Khoder El Ali was refused bail, a third man Ahmed Karnib,21 also had his bail application refused.
www.abc.net.au/news/2012-03-14/pistol-import-ring-exposes-customs-service/388945...

That is just one gun smuggling ring caught by Police and customs, 160-220 Glocks is a lot of illegal handguns brought in by these people.

It makes it harder to acquire them.

This is typical of the gibberish the NRA keeps repeating until people take it seriously. You would realise this is a stupid question if you hadn't seen it repeated 100 times.

Actually they just get them from somewhere else, like ilegally importing them, like they have been doing for the last couple of decades.

But a knee jerk hysterical reaction, works well too, when it come to bullsh1t law and order issues

Actually they usually don't. There is plenty of clear evidence that Australian gun laws work to save lives and keep guns out of the hands of criminals. Some people just train themselves to be blind to it.

That's the idiotic spin the NRA and other gun lobbies want you to see - that any evasion of the law means the law does nothing. If someone told you we should not have speed limits because people still speed, you would call them an idiot, and rightly so. But for some reason logic gets reversed for the gun debate.

Like I said, there is plenty of clear evidence that Australian gun laws do work to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and to save lives.

Not even close to a correct analogy.

Should a person suffer the consequenses of therir speeding, loss of licence etc, yes it's called personal responsibility, should everyone have their large cars and trucks taken off them because of the deliberate and vile actions of one driver?

According to you and the rest of the anti gun hysterics, absolutely.

But not as much fun when it affects you.

It's a perfect analogy of the idiotic argument that illegal importation of firearms is proof, or even evidence, that firearms regulations do not work.
