i think the thing that the average suburbanite (ie the 12 million average australians who determine election results) finds peculiar about this issue is the following.
we have many many do-gooders who seem to be sprouting all these messages of concern and weeping tears about "drownings at sea' and 'human suffering'. that in itself would probably be acceptable if it werent for the following....
your average suburbanite sees single mums with no support from the community struggling to get their kids educated and off to school
your average suburbanite sees divorced dads with no money doing hard labour and trying to care for kids on weekends with no community support.
your average suburbanite sees elderly people with disease struggling to do their activities of daily living with no community support or encouragement.
your average suburbanite sees kids with anxiety disorders, kids living in abusive homes, lonely people, people with addictions, people who are close to breakdown, people who cant pay their mortgages.
they see ALL THIS SUFFERING which is very real to them and pervades their world and then they see the absolute MONUMENTAL ammount of outpouring of compassion (in words anyway

) from the politicians and the journalists and the army of hand wringers, and they say
wheres my share of your compassion.??
until this situation is rectified and some balance restored, assylum seekers will continue to get little sympathy out in voter heartland, and rightly so, they are certainly getting the lions share from the "compassion talkfest wanker brigade"
