It doesn't matter who is the leader after the election and they're in opposition.
They'll spend X amount of months or years without direction and seeming like they're completely lost. They'll probably change leaders once or twice during that time.
The only leader that matters is the one that takes them to the next election - or the one after - or the one after that.

They all go through the same thing - the only thing that varies is how long it takes.

they were bad in govt   imagine what they will be like in opposition...grooooooooooooooooan.

buzz will be beside himself... he blamed the Libs for ever for Labor being in govt in NSW for 15 years...the opposition was so bad they made anything look good.. according to the oracle buzz. Sad

The ALP does not want a leader, they had two in 6 years that they knifed, surely that is enough for a trend ?

Otherwise how many leaders does the ALP have to knife before your convinced they really don't want one. The fact they brought Rudd back merely suggest they wanted a popular mouth piece not a leader.

The polls don't look to good for him, he needs to take a seat in a climate where the ALP is on the nose, he is against the current without a paddle.

I don't like Combet, in fact he scares me a bit. But I can see him as a successful Labor leader in something of the old style.
But I don't think he is even standing for election. Not that that would be a hurdle a bit down the track if they wanted to draft him.

You have got to be joking throwing his name up, he is just a snippy ex-unionist who cut and ran when Rudd came back.

One of the big problems that got worse under Gillard was the perception that the union owns the ALP.

unfortunately, it was a perception under Rudd but an undeniable fact under Gillard.

He will win Forde & be the next opposition leader to
take Labor to victory in 2016.

If you think the ALP is a genuine democratic party, what you need is a less popular hard head to bash the party into a competitive shape for the next election, there needs to be a big clean out of all the dead wood.

The ALP keeps saying they need to reform but the the party does not want to, so who leads the party is irrelevant. The public have seen far too much of the inner workings of the ALP especially out of the NSW ALP / Obied affair.

My view is that the ALP will need either Abbott to be a complete screw up or for the ALP to wait a decade or two.

ironically, what Labor needs now is a mssive electoral flogging.  This is the sort of impetus that will force even the most pig-headed ALP faction leader to accept that there is a problem.  And just as it was under Whitlam it will probably take a SECOND flogging in 20106 to finally get the party to reform and become viable again.  The biggest tragedy of Rudd leading now is that his (fading) popularity will probably be enough to prevent the landslide that the ALP desperately needs to start the reform process.

The Libs had four leaders in six years, two knifed and one dumped by his own electorate.
Labor best get their act together because the indecent assaulter will be as popular as a fart in a sauna come three years time.

Well you suggest someone. The lefties here are like stunned mullets and don't want to think about it.

bogarde73

That someone has to be able to get the factions into line.

The only reason they tolerate Rudd was because Gillard was as popular as a fart in a sauna.

That was a very negative reason to choose Rudd.

Given there will be less ALP MP's around and many of the current ones are bowing out its hard to see anyone who has the balls and public profile to stand up to the factions and the union.

Chris Bowen would be about the only name (if you insist on one), but everyone knows the bunny holding the bag after an election loss is a care taker leader at best, much like a night watchman in cricket.

My real answer is that the party needs to be more democratic and they need all new fresh faces...... especially the leader.

I am guessing they might use straws to work out who will lead the party, the unlucky one who draws the shortest gets the gig.

well actually the irony is that Gillard was popular INSIDE the ALP but outside, very unpopular.  Rudd is the reverse.
