TONY Abbott has again overtaken Julia Gillard as preferred prime minister as the Coalition continues to dominate a federal Labor Party distracted by leadership divisions.

According to the latest Newspoll survey, taken exclusively for The Australian on February 10-12, Mr Abbott now leads Ms Gillard as preferred prime minister by 40 per cent to 37 per cent, reversing their positions two weeks ago. Ms Gillard had held a clear lead over Mr Abbott as preferred prime minister since mid-November, when she won kudos for hosting the Queen and US President Barack Obama.

Based on preference flows at the August 2010 election, the Coalition now holds a 10-point two-party preferred lead over the ALP of 55 per cent to 45 per cent. The Coalition led 54 per cent to 46 per cent two weeks ago.

Full details of the latest Newspoll survey will be published in The Australian newspaper and online on Tuesday.

Tony Abbott needs to be piled on a plane with all of the other corrupt criminals and run out of Australia and banned from coming back. Cool

While more people still disapprove of Mr Abbott than approve, his satisfaction rating, the difference between the two, has dropped to minus 16.

During the same period, Ms Gillard's satisfaction levels have remained little changed, with satisfaction going from 33 per cent to 32 per cent and dissatisfaction rising from 55 per cent to 57 per cent.

Ms Gillard's net satisfaction rating is now minus 25 and has been minus 20 or more since September.

Gee, both old party leaders on the nose.
Who would of guessed?

It was only a matter of time before people started realising that Gillard is a liar and hopelessly incompetent at her job. Tony Abbott was part of a highly successful government for more than a decade which oversaw unprecedented growth and zero debt. Time to watch Labor and Gillard freefall in the polls!  Smiley

While I would call Abbott a few things, corrupt criminal would not be one of them.  Can you tell us why you referred to him as a corrupt criminal?

Well I don't know about other lefties, mel, but I think preferred PM is very important. I am not concerned Abbott is preferred over Gillard though, Rudd has never been beaten as preferred PM by Abbott just like Rudd never lost a TPP against Abbott, and I expect Rudd will be PM again, sooner rather than later. When Rudd again becomes PM, if all the polls that you rightards seem to hang off are correct, Rudd will kick Abbotts ass.

and in true roo-girl fashion we go from one fantasy (gillard beating abbott) to another.

Abbott has already beaten Rudd and now Gillard. they need to try and find someone else to throw at him.

They would not have dumped Rudd if he was competent skip.
You know this.
They would have accepted his controlling ways had his policies and implementations not been associated with mismanagement and waste.
Had he been competent, Abbott like Turnbull would not have made any headway whatsoever, and Abbott would have been replaced.
If Rudd had been competent, the media would not have turned on him.

Skip, it's not the numbers that are the issue here, and you are banking everything on them alone.
The faceless men would not have come knocking had Rudds policies and implementations had been competent, and Juliar would still be the Deputy.
They don't get rid of winning leaders Skip, because someone doesn't like their style.
The wheel don't turn that way.
The media would not have turned either had Rudd's policies not been so associated with incompetence, waste and mismanagement.
Nor could Abbott have ever been given the airplay had the media believed Rudd knew what he was doing.

Concerned?
Rudd has already demonstrated his incompetence.
You have totally forgotten that Gillard has gotten to where she is now USING Rudd's hand-me-down policies.

Gee you better tell your chums and the political parties, chook, because most of the country will tell you that its all about the numbers. Preferred PM and TPP wins elections. Here's a tip, chook, the person that gets the biggest TPP WINS the election, and Rudd ALWAYS beat phony tony, and the polls that ALL the rightards here gloat about ,and this thread is about, say that if Rudd was PM again he would kick phony tonys ass. What is it about facts that confuse you chook????

the true facts are that Abbott started his job a huge margin behind Rudd and quickly starting to reel him in. He started at 16% behind and was at 4% when the cowardly ALP knifed Rudd. So by any measurement, Abbott had Rudd well and truly beaten. And once Gillard came in, Abbott did the same thing to her.

Abbott has beaten both rudd and gillard.

you laborites are too senseless to realise when you are shafted.

you have a very simplistic view of 'winning'. in your mind, the anchor leg of a relay team is still a loser even if he picks up a huge margin on his opponent.

Sounds like the shredding was not very thorough.....Kevin Rudd could not even get that right???

Once the public gets to view these documents and if thoroughly true, then I would not want Rudd or anyone involved, in politics anymore let alone PM.

If something comes of it then so be it....I will not defend Kevin Rudd or anyone else over covering up rape.....However the feigned concern from Jones and Ackerman is sickening to say the least.....These wankers are after political damage to Kevin Rudd and the ALP and are using this woman to further their cause.....They defend priests who have been convicted of the same thing FFS.....These people are all worthless trash of the lowest order IMO....If this woman gets any justice it will be because of better men than Jones and Ackerman!!!

Well I don't see anyone else stepping up and making sure that labor can't bury it.

If your rant was remotely true, then I would say it is a necessary evil.

LOL the filth that is the extreme right are trying to trot out the Heiner affair again ,this will be as big a failure as last time. but it does highlight how afraid the scum are of a return to Rudd. Grin Grin Grin

So you don't care if the Heiner affair is true or not. You are a disgrace.

Then you did not listen to the audio very well did you.....Some bloke named Lindberg or something is pushing this issue.....Jones and Ackerman are just tools of the media trying to do political damage to the ALP and have nothing to do with trying to gain justice for anyone....Lindberg would push the issue without their help and has done so for 19 years...Jones and Ackerman are total flakes who have defended priests and others in the same situation.....they have no credibility IMO!!!

"Some bloke" yeh that'll do it lol. No, Jones will not allow for labor to bury this one, sorry, not.

You give Jones credit for Lindbergs work.....Jones said SFA until Lindberg provided the ammunition you dolt...Jones is an opportunistic tosser of the lowest order who did not care less about this woman until it became a problem for Kevin Rudd!!!

Evidence, or its just another lie, longlie.

and he has. during their time together, abbott improved by 12% while rudd dropped 12%

you have a very simplistic view of 'winning'. in your mind, the anchor leg of a relay team is still a loser even if he picks up a huge margin on his opponent.

but dont worry, your delusions will still keep you war, inside.

Still no evidence, longlie????? you look a bigger liar with each post you dont put up the evidence.

you have a childs interpretation of almost everything. you are really going to suffer after the next election. You will probably be saying that Gillard 'actually won the election' despite abbott having a 40 seat margin.

There are two "dogs" in that race. If it were Rudd and Turnbull, it would be a far more effective "hung parliament"

Either way, I hope that the next election result is hung until we see some real leadership from one side or the other.

Don't get your HOPES up too high. Better to go for a very low hope according to the polls. That way you have less to fall. Depression will not sink in.

I fail to see any substance to that argument at all.....Lindberg provided members of the Senate with copies of the inquiry to try and provoke some form of justice for the victim and I hope he is successful.....I have not defended anyone who has covered up sexual assault that would be Jones and Ackerman....I have put no conditions on justice for anyone so I fail to see what you are trying to say???

What? Rudd and Turnbull? you go and wash your mouth out with soap ,sonny, the extreme congo line known as the far right will never allow the people of this country to choose between the two candidates they want. How dare you even suggest a couple of moderates face off.

Gillard will not win the election unless she brings her party into line.

Leaks like "she penned her speech two weeks ago", just show a party lacking strong leadership.

She needs to hang a few out to dry.

Cant see it happening though, she doesnt have the support, but its time to put these rabble rousers down.

While Abbott is opposition leader, the only thing stopping the labor party from a 3rd term is itself. And its doing a fine job of stopping it so far.

Nup, I dont like Rudd, but I'm a realist I can see the writing on the wall. If I had my way Rudd would face off against Turnbull and if that were the case I'd preference  Turnbull over Rudd. Sounds like the shredding was not very thorough.....Kevin Rudd could not even get that right???

Once the public gets to view these documents and if thoroughly true, then I would not want Rudd or anyone involved with the deception and coverup to be involved in politics anymore, let alone PM.

Funnily enough, Richo said (I think on Qanda?) late last year that she wasn't doing too badly in the leakage department when compared to previous governments on both sides.

I sense Gillard has come out this year armed with spit and bile and is ready to kick some nuts. I hope so! I've got some popcorn and some beer laid in, ready for the day!!  Grin Grin Frankly I think she's deserved a better run than she's had. Ultimately though it's up to her to make the best out of what she's got.

Frankly, I don't think that Gillard, Rudd, Abbott, Turnbull OR 99.9% of the other Pollies are up to the job!

Which is why it now boils down to picking the best options, out of some lousy choices!

And, we now really have an outstanding bunch to pick from, as far as really poor choices are concerned!

Maybe the best way, as has been put before, is to pick someone not yet in parliament, who has yet been indoctrinated?

But we all know that's not how the "system" works!

Those sexist assholes are yet to make a sexist comment skip.
And as for 'doing a job on her for their boy' couldn't be further from the truth.
Hadley totally savaged the Liberal NSW Premier only just this morning on 2GB, and Alan Jones is still going hypo over CSG after all these weeks, and his 110% support for the farmers and the Greens on this issue.
These guys play the issue, not which side of politics they belong.
It's hardly their fault Gillard is incompetent, and them pretending she is otherwise wouldn't do anyone any favours Skip.

maybe if she stopped lying and did something competently, that would help. At the moment, the only thing she does well is renege on her promises.

Howards was proven to be a liar and found to be so by the people!!!

Howard censured over push for war with Iraq

Prime Minister John Howard was yesterday censured by the Senate for misleading the public in his justification for sending Australia to war with Iraq.

It was only the fourth time in more than three decades a sitting prime minister has been censured and the second in Mr Howard's seven-and-a-half years in office.

The motion attacked Mr Howard for failing to adequately inform Australians that intelligence agency warnings about a war with Iraq would increase the likelihood of a terrorist attack.

It also noted that no evidence had yet been produced by Mr Howard to justify his claims that in March this year, Iraq possessed stockpiles of completed biological chemical weapons that justified going to war.

The Opposition, Greens and Australian Democrats voted together to defeat the Government by 33 votes to 30.

Greens senator Bob Brown said Mr Howard was involved in an unprecedented deceit of the nation and deserved censure.

He said Mr Howard had argued that Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and support of international terrorism threatened Australia. "It has become abundantly clear that the Prime Minister was not just a bit wrong. He was totally wrong," he told parliament.

Defence Minister Robert Hill said the Australian and other governments believed Saddam Hussein's weapons programs posed a very real danger.

Opposition Senate leader John Faulkner said Mr Howard had been loose with the truth on issues of national security.

Mr Howard was censured by the Senate in March 2002 over his failure to stop Liberal Senator Bill Heffernan's attack on High Court Justice Michael Kirby.

The reasons for censure are still relevant today.....No evidence has ever been produced by Howard or anyone else.....Yet he told Parliament he had proof.....he lied!!!

I agree with that, but the sexist assholes that run the right wing media in this country were always going to do a job on her for their "boy",phony tony.

But we all know that's not how the "system" works!

you've said that before and the obvious objection to it still applies. Under your system every MP would be an inexperienced newbie. if you think thats a good idea, then next time you want an electrician make sure you get an apprentice on his first week to rewire your house.

LW,
Do you know what generally happens when "our system" sends a small time criminal to jail?

of what possible relevence is that to this thread or my post????

Abbott needs good policies that will provide Australian's with a reason to vote for him.....Anyone that thinks polls this far out from an election without seeing Abbott's policies means anything is deluded to say the least!!!

But if labor tell us their policies, can we believe them.  Not a chance. (There will be no carbon tax under a government labor leads). Can we believe labor will be competent regardless of policies. Not a chance.

Me think you are deluded.

No point trying to debate you mate when you cannot see the reality in the face of a hung parliament.....Julia Gillard is facing a backlash for her broken promise and rightly so....However my point still stands that Abbott must provide a solid policy platform before the next election to get elected....He will not be voted in if he does not provide policies people want will he???

progs has a great point though, and this is something that I (and many others) have been asking for months now: how can any word/policy be believed by Gillard with her track record of lying?

The same reasons Howard was known as mean and tricky but still managed to get elected despite people expecting him to lie at each election.
Labor leaders lie and so do Coalition leaders..unless you just came down in the last shower you would know this.

because he WASNT generally considered mean and tricky. the voting community at large considered him honest and reliable. You can have your own opinion all you like, but it doesnt change the commounity view.

ahhh... the old excuse. King Of The Weasel Words never seemed to get told anything did he? Some minion always forgot to tell him what was going on at a crucial moment. It was never really his fault. He just didn't know! If he'd known then he would have done something about it... truly ruly! Anyone writing a book about Howard's term of office would be bound to call it "Howard's Lost Years" because he was lost in the halls of parliament without a clue what was going on. That's a great leader you guys hold up as a hero of the Liberal cause!

He was a lying turd, lower than a snake's arsehole and twice as dirty.

only odd if you are dim and partisan enough to honestly beleive that there was PROOF there were no WMDs. you only THOUGHT there wasnt, just as other people thought there WERE.

the trouble is that you really rationalisation was based on cowardice, just like most of your posts on here.

Howard's name and legacy lives on as the most popular PM ever. Your name is beyond anonymous.

The only people claiming there were WMDs were Blair, Howard and Bushes war machine.
Every other person on the globe saw it for the lie that it was.
I dont know where you were at the time longy but the evidence against WMDs espesially from the UN inspectors in Iraq against was pretty conclusive
Everyone knew it was a lie invented by Bush Blair and Howard except for you

Frankly, I don't think that Gillard, Rudd, Abbott, Turnbull OR 99.9% of the other Pollies are up to the job!

Which is why it now boils down to picking the best options, out of some lousy choices!

And, we now really have an outstanding bunch to pick from, as far as really poor choices are concerned!

Maybe the best way, as has been put before, is to pick someone not yet in parliament, who has yet been indoctrinated?

But we all know that's not how the "system" works!

you've said that before and the obvious objection to it still applies. Under your system every MP would be an inexperienced newbie. if you think thats a good idea, then next time you want an electrician make sure you get an apprentice on his first week to rewire your house.

Do you know what generally happens when "our system" sends a small time criminal to jail?

It is an odd rewriting of history

only odd if you are dim and partisan enough to honestly beleive that there was PROOF there were no WMDs. you only THOUGHT there wasnt, just as other people thought there WERE.

the trouble is that you really rationalisation was based on cowardice, just like most of your posts on here.

Howard's name and legacy lives on as the most popular PM ever. Your name is beyond anonymous.

I thought Menzies was the most popular PM ever

Actually, according to the polls, the most popular Pm in Australia,EVER,was kevvy with an approval rating of 74%. Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

try an actual poll held outside of their term of office, to discover their LONG-TERM popularit - not their on-hit-wonder polls.

But I am sure you ahve no idea what I am talking of. your grade 7 education probably didnt cover concepts like this.

In England Perceptions - we call it playing both sides of the bat and then claiming victory whichever way the ball flies.

Kind of like betting on red, black and green and then stating you're a soothsayer when it lands on one of them.

You can't be pro and anti austerity measures.

Yes, I can!

Why? Because it should never have got to this stage, where we can't move forward or back!

If general AUS-terity comes into force in OZ, then the same results will happen, as per currently happening in the UK, Greece & elsewhere, THE ECONOMY WILL HIT THE WALL, BECAUSE DEMAND WILL FALL EVEN FURTHER THAN IT WOULD, GIVEN THE CURRENT ADVERSE MACRO FACTORS IN PLAY!

There is a need to reduce Debt, particularly at a Global level, but in OZ where the Debt levels are not as high as the US and much of Europe, we should not go for "general AUS-terity, rather we should be VERY TARGETED in what we do!

However, that is not to say that there is not quite a bit of target shooting which will now has to be done, which should never have been needed, if our local Pollies & the Global, particularly in the US & Europe, had done thier jobs anywhere near properly, which they did not!

Whether you like the fact or not, this is my take -

The global economy is made up on three interlinked regions and trading blocs.
NAFTA, The EU and China. I could say "Asia" but I really think now China is big enough to override anything in Asia, including Japan.

Australia is in none of them - not ASEAN, not EU, not NAFTA.
Therefore Australia will not dictate terms on global credit and trading - Australia will basically be affected by them.

Thus, Australia's economic well-being will principally be decided in Beijing and not Canberra.

You could model the pottery wheel all you like - and overall Australia has not done a bad job - but without the Chinese foot on the pedal - it would all come crashing down pretty quickly.

There is no need for austerity measures in Australia I agree.
However there is in Europe and that is the correct policy.

In Britain we suffered badly under a decade of Labour rule (debt grew out of control - as it tends to under that party) and last time it took Mrs Thatcher to sort it out.
This time the job falls on the shoulders of Dangerous Dave and I think he's actually doing a reasonable job.

I could go into a whole bundle of different issues that will dictate what will affect OZ, but I agree our Economic wellbeing is now largely out of our hands, from a positive outlook, but we & our Politicians, can still mess it up, from a negative aspect!

However, Europe & the US are pretty much beyond redemption, although the "general AUS-terity" programs in Europe & to come in the US are absolutely incorrect, at absolutely the wrong time.

This is not another Reagan/Thacther era, the inputs & outcomes are like chalk & cheese!

Both Europe & the US will fold, taking OZ & the ROW with them!

one of your more confusing posts nedwin/pinhead. you cant have it both ways yet you demand your right to do so. You cant reduce debt without reducing spending yet you oppose reducing spending and reducing debt.

The european problem is simply that now there is no hoice. after decades of debt-driven incompetent socialism, their debt is so high that austerity is their ONLY option.

but you certainly are a weird one. you complain about debt but complain about any efforts to reduce it. You and pauline hanson probably think the solution is to just print more money.

you really are silly at times.

What I don't know LongWeakend, is what is worse -
1) Your lack of ability to string a sentence together, without getting your 3 thumbs in the road & making your usual spelling mistakes.
2) Your inability to make a point, without running others down.
3) Your lack of comprehension, on & of the written language.
4) Your inability to get out of the past & be able to comprehend what is happening now & what is influencing events now & in the future.

There, now are you happy, that I've done a YOU?

Now that you're happy, surely even you can understand this -

Australia doesn't need a general AUS-terity program, its Debt is NOT out of control, it is quite reasonable, but we will still need some very well targeted Tax increases & Expenditure reductions, as a result of Global Problems , which started in the USA & Europe and are now moving on to China & elsewhere & the Macro factors which are now in play!

However, Europe, the USA & Japan have already moved past the point of no return and because of issues relating to Demographics, Peak Energy, Peak Debt & Climate Change, they are already on an irreversible Economic slide downhill, which is set to last several decades, at least!

To impose a general AUS-terity program on those Economies, at this point in the game, would be akin to throwing kerosene onto a fire to put in out.

However, that is being done, that will be done & YOU WOULD ALSO DO IT, but it IS STILL AN IDIOTIC MOVE & IT WILL EXACERBATE (make worse) THE DECLINE THAT THESE COUNTRIES WILL EXPERIENCE!!! A dose of general AUS-terity, as distinct from a very specific bunch of measures in Australia, would also act to make our situation worse than it may otherwise be, as it would act to exacerbate a Declining Demand for Goods & service, which is coming anyway, due to the above Macro factors & the worsening Global situation.

Btw, I'm still not Nedwin and that will not change, no matter how many times you say it!

oh solution-less one.... what would YOU do for Europe since you are so clever? Several countries have reached the poinbt where they are unable to pay their debt which is why smarter people than you (most of us) agree that a sensible idea is to SPEND LESS. if you cant pay your bills in real life what do you do? SPEND LESS.

Yes, austerity is going to hammer their economies. but the options are limited to just two: Austerity or soveriegn default and the mass destruction that would bring.

But apparently you think there is a third option. care to share it coz there at 500million europeans waiting to hear from you.

you may not be nedwin (although I think you are) but you are most certainlt, a pinhead.

Oh & if Nedwin is watching, I wish him well!

oh solution-less one.... what would YOU do for Europe since you are so clever? Several countries have reached the poinbt where they are unable to pay their debt which is why smarter people than you (most of us) agree that a sensible idea is to SPEND LESS. if you cant pay your bills in real life what do you do? SPEND LESS.

Yes, austerity is going to hammer their economies. but the options are limited to just two: Austerity or soveriegn default and the mass destruction that would bring.

But apparently you think there is a third option. care to share it coz there at 500million europeans waiting to hear from you.

you may not be nedwin (although I think you are) but you are most certainlt, a pinhead.

Do you really think there is a solution, where the problems will be solved?

Are you that naive? Btw, that's a rhetorical question!

With Greece Bond holders already taking a 70% hair cut, Greece have already defaulted, but it has not been declared a default because that would involve major US & European Banks taking a massive hits via CDS & derivatives markets and send Global financial markets
into an immediate frenzy.

However, whether it is Greece, Italy or some other country that day can not be permanently relegated, it can only be delayed a little more and time is what is being sort, in the belief that "something" will solve this "Gordian Knot" AND GIVEN THE GLOBAL MACRO FACTORS IN PLAY, THAT JUST ISN'T GOING TO HAPPEN!

So, in short, there is only one option, but no one wants it happening "on their watch", so they are busily trying to kick the can, further down the road.

Problem is, that can not continue and when TSHTF, this time really will be different!

Btw, your assertions about me & Nedwin are like your thoughts on Economics, they are simply WRONG!

However, that is not to say that there is not quite a bit of target shooting which will now has to be done, which should never have been needed, if our local Pollies & the Global, particularly in the US & Europe, had done thier jobs anywhere near properly, which they did not!

one of your more confusing posts nedwin/pinhead. you cant have it both ways yet you demand your right to do so.

You and pauline hanson probably think the solution is to just print more money.

you really are silly at times.

but you are STILL saying they must reduce debt AND increase spending. despite all your waffle, you ahve still not answered how that is possible.

and btw. you should look up on the meaning of 'default'. Greeces HASNT defaulted.

Debt does not exist - it is a lie and it has nothing to do with the fact that we will not work under subhuman conditions for the Government under any circumstances or accept the burden of their stupidity and economic mismanagement.  Bad unstable, insecure Government must not be submitted to. Cool

Tony Abbot will lead the most Radical Interventionist Red Communist Government in Australias history - he wants to tell you what to think, how to think it and when to think it, he wants to abolish job security and stability completely, he wants to be able to hire and fire you at will, be wants to be able to control your finances - tell you what to spend, how to spend it and when to spend it.  So remember, when we get rid of the current bunch of ratbags in the Temple of Idols and Devils in Canberra, there is another bunch of frothing at the mouth loons just itching to get their hands on power and destabilize and play god with our lives.  So be ready for class war, because after the next election it is on - the battle for sovereignty and liberty of the Australian mind and conscience.

The Next PM Of Australia...?

You reckon? Abbott wins the next election no matter who wins tomorrow. Abbott has a mandate to rescind carbon tax, stop illegal immigrants and if Bob Brown tries to block that legislation, Abbott will ram a DD up his backside so hard it'll leave Bob running away with his tail between his fishnet pantihose.

Abbott has no mandate by Green supporters and Labor wont vote for anything Abbott puts up after his unprofessional performance over the last few yrs.
In short, if Abbott wants another election a few mths after he gets in and risk even more Greens getting into the Senate...good for him. But one thing is for certain, Green voters are not going to suddenly become hardline ultra conservatives and flock to the Libs in the event of a DD. Abbott is going to have to follow Julia and negotiate with the Greens for many years to come.
Why do neo cons think a DD would favour them?
They'll get all the votes they are ever going to get at the next election..it aint ever gonna get any better so they better make the most of it.

What makes you possibly think the Greens would win a DD on the carbon tax? It's almost universally hated, with the vast majority of Australians against it. All Abbott needs to do to win the next election is announce one policy and put his feet up - rescind the carbon tax. That one policy alone will be enough to decimate Labor and the Greens, along with the idiotic band of Independents who put them there in the first place!

you really dont get what a MANDATE is, do you? it isnt something that YOU agree with, it is something the majority agrees with. Greens of course, don get that concept.

the greens vote is LOWER now than at the last election. that certianly doesnt translate into MORE seats (unless you are thinking like Greens_lose who has brought as such classics as the NSW election being 'a bad result' for the coalition')

just another reminder to you loses supporting Gillard...

ABBOTT IS THE PREFERRED PM.

And I hope he enjoys playing priest and alterboy with  Commie Bob when he becomes PM  Grin

Bob is more likely to sulk in the shadows when he loses his little bit of power that he currently clings to by his pantihose.

He'll have even more power in the Senate after the next election and Abbott will be his leather chap clad plaything  Grin

Labor is now polling lower than when Rudd was knifed. How this can be bad news for Abbott is beyond me.

the lefites can be pretty weird at time. being ten points in fron is apparently BAD NEWS. I think the rest of us would enjoy having that kind of 'bad news' in our own lives!
