He knew your circumstances.  If he felt that he waited long enough he could have dealt with it in the same way he dealt with it when he first sent you the money ... privately.  This whole crap about the cake was just his way of getting some sort of petty revenge on you. What we have established:

1. I said I would bake a fruitcake for Aussie

2. Aussie refunded me $60 I had paid him—for what will not be revealed by me.

3. I made a cake. Very substandard.

5. 6 days later Mum dies. Bit later kitchen starts getting packed up

6. Arrived here I am unpacking, find some of the gear—the big Kenwood stand mixer, big mixing bowl etc. I start preliminary pricing etc
