WASHINGTON, D.C. — Just days after President Donald Trump vowed to issue every American citizen a $5,000 check if Republicans won the midterms, Democrats countered with their own offer: if they are elected, every voter would give them $5,000.
The heartfelt plea was reportedly designed to motivate the Democratic base and get people energized ahead of the midterms, a voting period with famously low voter turnout compared to presidential election years. And nothing motivates Democrats more than promising to take away people's hard-earned money.
In an appearance on CNN, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries explained the party platform. "Republicans are going to reframe this as us taking voter money, but that's not true at all," he said. "We're not taking your cash, you get to give us your cash. That's a big difference. But either way, we end up with your money, and that's what's important."
At a campaign event on Friday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reiterated the popular talking point. "Kennedy famously said, 'Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country,'" she said. "And what you can do is give us $5,000 when we raise taxes after the midterms. We will have more of your money. That is our solemn pledge to the American people."
As predicted, Republicans did indeed accuse Democrats of trying to steal taxpayer dollars. "They're not even promising anything, they're just saying they'll take your money," Sen. Rand Paul pointed out. "I don't know why people keep voting for them. Am I out of touch? Should I be stealing money?"
At publishing time, Democrat approval ratings had surged upward among voters who don't pay taxes.
And yet, no Dem has
ever made such an offer - not during covid, not during the GFC, not even when Clinton - it's the economy, stupid - was pulling in a record surplus. Never
ever.
But now, in the middle of the biggest US debt crisis ever, there's your DL, offering bribes.
I must say, it's a little peculiar. You love to chuck a hissy over government waste, mismanagement, corruption and incompetence, but when your DL flips the tables, you go all shy.
All those shibboleths you once espoused - fiscal prudence, free trade, sovereign borders, state rights, the rule of law, "common sense".
Your DL has blitzkrieged them all. Sheesh, he's even threatened to seize territories from your former fatherland. He's telling your beloved Mother England to cede Northern Ireland. He's ended free trade in the US, violated treaties with allies, started wars, breached multiple nations' territorial integrity, sent the National Guard into US states, broken multiple laws, undermined the Constitution and recently condemned the Supreme Court.
You know all this, it's not even news. Now he's offering cash bribes to voters, you're forced to retreat, hiding behind whatabout-that and
not satire. You'll chuck in a Paki and a liar-liar for good measure, but you know you're done.
You're not a conservative, you never held to any real values at all. That, dear boy, was all a ruse.
So now we know. You're not a conservative. You're not a lib... you know the word, even if you can't bring yourself to say it. You're not a monarchist or a constitutionalist or any of that guff. All that huffing and puffing about superior Western culture and values, you never meant any of it.
You, old boy, are a
fascist - a naughty old Nazi, and that's okay. Why not just come out and own it?
