"Footage of Brittany Higgins’ husband David Sharaz has been referred to the police after GetUp!'s stunt hijacked Pauline Hanson’s first National Press Club address.

The National Press Club will consider pursuing the left-wing activist group for damage to equipment after a banner attacking Ms Hanson was lowered during her speech.

A sign affixed to a projector screen was lowered behind Ms Hanson about 20 minutes into the address. It read: “I opposed a pay rise for workers while I took a $100,000 pay rise for myself”.

It is understood footage given to police showed Mr Sharaz, who was declared bankrupt by a court last year, at the $700 event pressing a button before the banner unfurled.

Mr Sharaz leads media and campaigns at GetUp! – the group which has since claimed responsibility for the stunt.

In a statement on Wednesday, the National Press Club confirmed it referred the relevant footage and other evidence to the Australian Federal Police.

"The National Press Club can confirm that the incident to disrupt Senator Hanson’s Address was undertaken by third parties," the National Press Club said in a statement.

"No club personnel or club contractors had any involvement in this matter.

"We have referred the relevant footage and other evidence to the AFP for further investigation."

"The organisation 'Get Up' is claiming credit for the stunt. The 'Get Up' representative at the address was David Sharaz.

"At time of writing, we understand he is yet to be interviewed by the AFP."

Two people entered the club's building on Tuesday without permission and "installed a separate drop-down screen" in front of the media wall, the statement said.

"It is evident that a further person present during the Address activated a remote device to trigger the unfurling of the coiled banner," it said.

"David Sharaz was seen filming the incident on his phone and, after the banner had lowered, left abruptly.

"We understand that this is likely to form part of the AFP investigation."

"When the investigation has concluded, the Club will consider its legal options against the perpetrators including recovering costs for the significant damage to the media wall / light box.

"The Club sincerely apologises to Senator Hanson for the incident."

The One Nation leader on Wednesday fronted journalists to outline the party’s vision for the nation.

Ms Hanson said “thank you very much” and continued her speech as the banner was removed.

National Press Club CEO Maurice Reilly quickly had the sign ripped down while Ms Hanson continued speaking.

“We are not doing stunts, we are at the Press Club,” Mr Reilly said.

Tom Connell, National Press Club president and Sky News Australia's chief election analyst, on Wednesday night emphasised the Press Club was a "secure room".

"There was a police presence, sniffer dogs in the room on the day to clear the room, so if there was something nastier than a banner it would have been found," he told Sky News Australia's Credlin show.

"[It] doesn't mean we're not taking this seriously, so we're going to be reviewing all of our various procedures when we have significant events such as this."

An ACT Policing spokesperson confirmed they had received a complaint regarding "allegedly unauthorised access and interference" with equipment in a Barton building."
