Teals form a party

A party of two.*

...

...

Independents Zali Steggall and Allegra Spender will form a new political party,
Community Strong Australia
, hoping to gain a spot in the Senate.

* Needs to be at least 5 to gain official party status.  Wink

To be recognized as a "minority party" and receive parliamentary resourcing/benefits, a party must not be part of the Government or Opposition and hold at least 5 members in the Parliament.

Other registered parties (e.g., Pauline Hanson's One Nation, Jacqui Lambie Network, Katter's Australian Party) and unaligned independents do not meet the 5-member threshold for official minority party status. They sit on the "crossbench" in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Hmmm  Undecided

In Australia, Section 123 of the Commonwealth Electoral Act (CEA) 1918 defines the criteria for the official registration of political parties.

To be considered an "eligible political party" and secure a spot on ballot papers, a party must:

Be a Parliamentary party (have at least one sitting member in the Federal Parliament), OR

Have at least 500 unique members who are on the electoral roll, AND

Be established with a written constitution that outlines the party's aims.

Anyway, I don't think it will go far.

Yeah, we are talking two different views of a political party here.

You can be a political party with less than 5 members in parliament for sure. I wasn't clear in my opening post that I was on about official parliamentary party status for "benefits" because two members do not qualify.

Anyhoo ... I reckon they could be swept away by the Orange Wave next election.

We'll see.

Agreed.

And the acronym is CSA - something more original would have been better.

I remember the teals?

I thought you needed more than two to form a party?

Isn’t two just a couple?

Doesn’t some billionaire own them?
