Labor, Liberal, One Nation Refuse To Tax Gas
Jun 2nd, 2026 at 5:53pm

Labor, Liberal and One Nation all refuse to support tax on gas exports in parliament
2026-06-02
greens.org.au
The Greens spokesperson for resources, Steph Hodgins-May, and Member for Ryan, Elizabeth Watson-Brown, condemn the major parties teaming up to shut down a tax on gas exports and One Nation for not even wanting to record a vote.   Sad

The issue was put to a vote in the House of Representatives, for the first time, today by Watson-Brown. It called on the government to implement a 25 per cent gas export tax.

Despite the evidence collected by the senate inquiry held into the topic in April and the overwhelming public support for such a move, Labor and the Liberals were united in voting down the measure.

Lines attributable to Senator Steph Hodgins-May:

“This was Labor’s chance to listen to the Australian people and back a tax on gas exports that would make multinational corporations pay what they owe.

“Instead, the major parties have once again joined forces to protect the interests of the gas lobby ahead of ordinary Australians struggling with the cost of living.

“It was particularly galling to see One Nation’s newly elected MP campaign as an alternative to politics-as-usual, only to fail to use his first substantive vote to stand up for his constituents when it mattered most.

“At a time when Labor, the Liberals and One Nation continue to protect corporate interests, the Greens remain the only party willing to take on the gas giants and fight for ordinary Australians who are sick of billion-dollar corporations avoiding their fair share of tax.

“The Greens will continue to push for gas corporations to pay what they owe and an end to the  loophole-ridden tax system that allows multinational corporations to make enormous profits while Australians pay more for energy and essentials.”

Lines attributable to Elizabeth Watson-Brown MP:

“What kind of democracy are we living in where the voices of the gas industry are louder than the voices of the Australian people?

“More than three in five Australians support a 25% tax on gas exports. They know we’re being ripped off and they want gas corporations to pay their fair share.

“Today Labor MPs have voted to protect the gas corporations from paying their fair share of tax. One Nation and the LNP didn’t even bother to show up.

“The major parties have voted against a tax that is incredibly popular, and would raise $17 billion a year that could fund real cost-of-living relief.

“Massive gas corporations have donated millions to the major parties, while we also see senior Ministers and even the PM parroting gas lobby talking points. It’s clearly paid off in the vote today.”

The Greens are morons.

Why tax gas exports to countries that Australia COMPLETELY relies on for fuel imports??

You tax gas export to Korea, Japan, China, they tax fuel exports to Austra;ia. Happy, Magic Grandpa??

No.

The Greens are morons. You are their spokesthingy.

A better idea may be a gas reservation policy, whereby a certain amount of gas must be reserved for domestic consumption at a lower price (it's not getting loaded onto ships, after all) than what it is exported for. That would mean a reliable supply and cheaper gas for customers.

Most of it is exported from WA.

We don't have a pipeline to move it to east coast or the facilities on east coast for it.

Leftists and the Ayatollahs have a lot in common when it comes to criticism of Islam, they don't tolerate it.

Ban all gas exports. Australia is losing financially twice via getting nothing for the gas, then that exported gas driving climate collapse loses.

Ban it's exports until we find a better way.

The Goldilocks zone in climate science refers to the temperature range where human civilisation, agriculture, and economic productivity have historically thrived.

Human activity, such as burning fossil fuel, is shifting climates away from that zone.

i.e. the boiling frog syndrome

So from far colder periods to warmer periods and humans actually thrived in the warmer periods. Unless of course you don't ascribe to the theory of humans coming from Africa, despite its widespread acceptance. Roll Eyes

Really? Proof? And no, climate models are not proof of anything. Roll Eyes

Don't you mean the new improved Guterres Boiling Ocean syndrome? Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

But according to wiki "The boiling frog syndrome is a metaphor that suggests people may fail to notice gradual changes that lead to negative consequences, rather than a scientifically proven phenomenon. While some experiments in the 19th century supported the idea, modern biologists argue that frogs would likely jump out of gradually heated water, making the premise largely symbolic rather than factual."

So a fallacious argument. Wink

Genetic analysis suggests that the global human population dropped to a bottleneck of roughly 5,000 to 10,000 breeding individuals around 70,000 years ago.  This near-extinction event, known as the Toba catastrophe theory, is attributed to the massive eruption of the Mount Toba supervolcano in Sumatra, which caused a severe volcanic winter and climate instability.

Humans do not thrive during climate instability, and moving out of Goldilocks equates to playing Climate roulette with all the gun's barrels full.

Humans burning fossil fuels, and other activities, create the greenhouse effect. Basic chemistry.
Have issues, take it up with the periodic table (or basic chemistry).

The boiling frog syndrome is a metaphor describing the failure to recognize or react to gradual, incremental changes that eventually lead to catastrophic or irreversible consequences.  It illustrates how individuals or societies may become complacent and adapt to worsening conditions—such as environmental degradation, organisational decline, or personal health issues—until it is too late to act.

The year 2024 set a new mean global surface temperature record, signaling an escalation of climate upheaval.

Currently, 22 of 34 planetary vital signs are at record levels.

Warming may be accelerating, likely driven by reduced aerosol cooling, strong cloud feedbacks, and a darkening planet.

The human enterprise is driving ecological overshoot. Population, livestock, meat consumption, and gross domestic product are all at record highs, with an additional approximately 1.3 million humans and 0.5 million ruminants added weekly.

In 2024, fossil fuel energy consumption hit a record high, with coal, oil, and gas all at peak levels. Combined solar and wind consumption also set a new record but was 31 times lower than fossil fuel energy consumption.

So far, in 2025, atmospheric carbon dioxide is at a record level, likely worsened by a sudden drop in land carbon uptake partly due to El Niño and intense forest fires.

Global fire-related tree cover loss reached an all-time high, with fires in tropical primary forest up 370% over 2023, fueling rising emissions and biodiversity loss.

Ocean heat content reached a record high, contributing to the largest coral bleaching event ever recorded, affecting 84% of reef area.

So far, in 2025, Greenland and Antarctic ice mass are at record lows. The Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets may be passing tipping points, potentially committing the planet to meters of sea-level rise.

Deadly and costly disasters surged, with Texas flooding killing at least 135 people, the California wildfires alone exceeding US$250 billion in damages, and climate-linked disasters since 2000 globally reaching more than US$18 trillion.

Climate change is endangering thousands of wild animal species; more than 3500 species are now at risk and there is new evidence of climate-related animal population collapses.

The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation is weakening, threatening major climate disruptions.

Climate change is already affecting water quality and availability, undermining agricultural productivity, sustainable water management, and increasing the risk of water-related conflict.

A dangerous hothouse Earth trajectory may now be more likely due to accelerated warming, self-reinforcing feedbacks, and tipping points.

Climate change mitigation strategies are available, cost effective, and urgently needed. From forest protection and renewables to plant-rich diets, we can still limit warming if we act boldly and quickly.

Social tipping points can drive rapid change. Even small, sustained nonviolent movements can shift public norms and policy, highlighting a vital path forward amid political gridlock and ecological crisis.

There is a need for systems change that links individual technical approaches with broader societal transformation, governance, policies, and social movements.
