A spokesman for the Somali government's maritime security service in Mogadishu told the Associated Press:

On Thursday, Somali pirates seized the Eritrean-flagged oil tanker M.T. Sibu 1 approximately 252 kilometers east of Mukalla and took it to the coast of Puntland.

The tanker is operated by a UAE company that was sanctioned by the US Treasury Department last year for alleged ties to the Iranian "shadow fleet."

The vessel's crew consists of 20 people, including 16 Indians.

The Sibu 1 is the sixth commercial vessel hijacked by Somali pirates since April 21, following the Honor 25, Sword, Eureka, Asana, and Lutuf.

Several hijackings occurred off the Yemeni coast, including the Eureka east of Akhwar and the Asana southwest of Mukalla.

Puntland authorities said unspecified groups "beyond their control" were behind the resumption of piracy.

They still have the problem of moving submersibles to launch.
