I watched a doco some years ago about white folk changing lifestyles with natives and when asking about toilet stuff… just go and dig a hole and use a rock to wipe.
As for bathing, the natives said to paint their bodies with this white paint to keep them clean and no need for regular bathing.

Well, how else did everyone wash or go to toilet in them early days?
I do know that when women had their monthly, they used special cloths folded a certain way and pinned on underwear. Then these cloths were washed after to use for next time.
Hence the expression related to the monthly as “being on the rags”

I’m certain this is all riveting stuff
