a .303 British bullet can penetrate 1/3rd of an inch (approximately 8.5mm) of steel.

That is a measure of power not of height.

Looks like this offender didn't have a license guns were unregistered.

To buy ammo in NSW you need to show registration papers proving you have a legal firearm that requires that specific ammo.

Some reports say it was a semi auto due to rapid fire.

The shots recorded include police returning fire, the rapid shots could be overlays or police semiautomatic pistols.

The height of a high calibre of course.
Things that are physical and are high must, presumably, have height [does not include odours].

If it was a .30 cal as reported - it sounds like an M1 Carbine. pop.. pop.. pop... no popwowww .you can hear a high velocity round in the air when it is fired ....  POSSIBLY an SKS 7.62 - same diameter....but definitely a lower velocity round used.

An M1 Carbine .30 cal in flesh is pretty nasty ... the report said .30 cal... the range was close... he was a poor shot or drunk...

Could be - good point.  I wouldn't respond to a rifleman with a pistol... only if there was nothing else... and no street cop is going to tackle a gunman in a raised position with a pistol - that's what the SOG are for with their HKs and stuff... in which case you'd hear roller bolt brrrr after BANG as the door goes down (depending on how it is done - could be BOOM BOOM BOOM on the hinges and catch with a heavy gauge shotgun solid shot - faster than a bam bam weight but a line of C4 could do it, but that takes time to set up) and then flash bangs to confuse and blind and immobilise the perp.....

Semi auto for sure - not even Lee Harvey Oswald can recycle a bolt that fast... (snide comment - Oswald didn't do it)...

I would go with SKS (Chinese AK47) in 7.62x39 going from size of bullet holes.
I don't like 7.62x39 it's slow lots of drop and piss poor BC.

We imported over 300K of them before 1996 didn't see that many handed in back in 1996.
They were around $399 back in 1994.

Old guy no glasses Iron sights with a rifle that wasn't very accurate to begin with might explain the luck people had in being missed.

Unlicensed unregistered so instead of cracking down on illegal firearms the government is likely to further restrict licensed firearm owners to give the appearance they're doing something.

Crime figure Mick Gatto fined over discovery of loaded shotgun in ensuite

Melbourne gangland figure Mick Gatto has been fined $2,500 for keeping a shotgun hidden at his home for more than ten years because he feared for his life.

The Heidelberg Magistrates Court heard that police found a loaded sawn-off shot gun concealed in a cavity behind a cabinet in the ensuite of Gatto's home while executing a search warrant over an unrelated matter in February.

They also found a box of shotgun cartridges and two boxes of ammunition.

His lawyer Sean Cash said the 60-year-old got the unregistered weapon in late 2005

Sawn off shotguns cannot be registered.

$2500 fine for having an illegal firearm isn't going to hurt a millionaire like Gatto.

Do the gun grabbers ever say we should have tougher laws for illegal firearms like mandatory jail terms?

Probably an SKS - he was a bad shot though, or drunk as a skunk.

Good point about another crackdown on licensed and good guy firearms owners who've spent years never doing anything wrong.

The semi auto SKS eject cases a fair way bolt action nowhere near as far.
If it was a bolt action they would have landed in his flat or on shop awning.

A friend had a SKS they were only 3-4 MOA at best which is piss poor accuracy. Iron sights at night old guy no glasses.

When we look at numbers of imported 30 cal semi auto the SKS would outnumber all the others combined.

How do you feel about mandatory jail for those caught with Illegal guns or would Labor oppose it because it would lock up their voters?

Police said shots were fired "indiscriminately" at passers-by over a two-hour period.

Police said Mr Mintzas did not have a gun licence and detectives were probing whether the gun was legally owned.

It took the Police 2 hours to respond?  Shocked

probing whether the gun was legally owned?
You cannot let someone who doesn't have a firearms license touch your guns.
How can it be legally owned when he didn't have a license?

They should be jailed... Labor would oppose it.

SKS good for very close quarters... but essentially a piece of shot worthy of a mass attack.  Hardly a sniper rifle..  Long ago I said I would prefer a heavy round with solid guidance... knew a bloke who was shot and fell and his defenders shot his attacker through a palm tree.. soft tissue vegetation.  Not an AK etc....
