Extenable leads are meant to bu used on trained dogs. Until your dog heels properly without pulling, stick to a fixed lead.

Totally agree! 100% !!

I had a lead someone bought for me from the Reject Shop. Used it for a while, then on a walk Socks saw this huge group of birds just ahead, lunged—and tore the lead right off the dongle attached to the collar! The lead I now use I bought from the Leather Smith in Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills. Two solid studs hold the lead to the handle and to the dongle that clips onto her collar. $120 IIRC but worth it.

I was standing at the top of a 1-5–2m bank. Socks saw someone walking up to where we were and started running towards that person. I made a gigantic step but managed to stay upright, just!

It is the advice coming from several sources, US Kennel club, obedience instructors at the clubs I have been to and various books etc. Leather is not just strong, it resists the dog biting the lead and so getting free of restraint. Booby doesn’t know.
