speaking of little women, don't deflect, tell us in all your wisdom what was wrong with Monks suggestion to use a leather lead 1 to 1.2m in length?

Hi Sonia.

Have a very short lead, 400-600mm lead and keep your dog close to your side, you want to teach them to stay at your side. Having a longer lead lets them get out in front of you and become the leader and that will also mean they are your protector. By having the short lead you become the leader and protector. Once a dog is in front of you they become the leader and you the follower and that is where your problem is.

Its much easier to control your dog with a short lead but it will take time and patience.

My little boy is so good off-lead I hardly use one, only on really busy roads.
He walks just a few steps in front of me and just a slap on my thigh and he heels.

Totally agree! 100% !!

My grandparents bred winning showdogs they asked me to take one of the pups they were keeping to obedience school when i was young which is important not only for the dog it also helps owners understand how obedience is taught.

Choker chains are used for training dogs on a lead which then allows small people even children to walk big strong dogs with safety.
The dog will learn how to behave then you can use any lead to walk them once they're trained.

If the dog starts running ahead or straining on the lead you stop. The dog quickly learns not to run ahead and keep a bit of slack in the lead when walking with choker chain.

I don't need to use a lead my dog understands from training he has to walk beside me on left side he never drifts more than 4-5 ft away when sniffing stuff.

Guide dog training is also very impressive the dogs understand walk/dont walk at crossings.
Never approach a guide dog for anything when they're working it distracts them.

Unless you have a very big, strong, dominant dog no need for a choker chain. Way to use a choker chain is to give a sharp pull on it so it clinks the chain. This noise reminds the dog to stay close to its owner/handler. It does mean you need to know how to fit the choker chain which is not used to choke the dog!

Yup, don’t approach or pat a guide dog, even if its owner has fallen etc.

A 1–1.2m lead allows you to have both hands on the lead, essential to  control any lunges by the dog.

Choker chains, interesting. It’s my daughters Beaglier, he’s 2 ‘n half now and more obedient but I’m still never going to take the lead unless she’s with me.
He’s a beautiful dog.
My daughter was in Bunnings recently, waiting at the checkout line, a man was behind her and he said, that’s a beagle isn’t it? She said yes. He said he had a beagle that he loved and the kids loved, then one day on the property , he picked up a scent and they never saw him again and how devastated they felt.
Then, he left the queue and daughter doesn’t know where he went. She said he must’ve got very sad seeing a similar dog that reminds them of that time. I reckon he must’ve gone into his car to cry a bit maybe.
Leads are more important than we realise.
I certainly don’t like those extendable ones. Not for me no thanks!

Definitely a short lead!
I love watching them as they mature and get more obedient as time passes. But always with little nibbly rewards …

Extenable leads are meant to bu used on trained dogs. Until your dog heels properly without pulling, stick to a fixed lead.

Never a truer word spoken. Oh there should be a warning or advice written on those extendable leads about that!
