If the diagnoses is late, yes.

That's what happened with my best friend - he was diagnosed too late, and died shortly after.

There are quite often no symptoms in the early stages, which is why many people don't get tested.

My father was diagnosed with bowel cancer in the early stages, and he made a full recovery.

Even until his death a couple of years ago, the cancer never returned - they got to it early.

"Bowel cancer is generally easier to treat effectively in its early stages. When detected early, the chances of successful treatment and long-term survival are significantly improved. Nearly everyone survives bowel cancer if diagnosed at the earliest stage, but the chances of survival decrease as the disease progresses."

Even if you have no symptoms whatsoever, get a test ... now!

From 1 July 2024, we have lowered the eligible screening age for the program from 50 to 45 years.

People aged 45 to 49 can request their first bowel cancer screening kit.

People aged 50 to 74 will continue to receive a bowel cancer screening kit every 2 years.

I hadn't ever done a bowel cancer test until last year. I never received the testing kits in the mail - ever (as far as I know).

On the strong recommendation of my GP I registered last year, received the kit, did the test and sent it back.

All OK, thank goodness. Especially after my close call with prostate cancer 5 years ago (I'm still all clear with that after my latest PSA blood test a few months ago).

I had a PSA done last week - all clear!

Just so others know, you used to be able to get one free PSA test every year, but now Medicare has changed it to one free test every two years (unless you have a family history of prostate cancer).

If you get more than one in a 24 month period, you'll have to pay Medicare about $60.

My Dad had the same thing - the surgeon did a wonderful job (all for free, in a private hospital).

, as I was, the public system here is fantastic. Red carpet. Cannot fault it, but I really wish they would not wake 'me' up every few hours at night, given 'I' am wired to just about everything imaginable already with things going beep beep!

Im surprised some here (Carl) never get the tests?
We’ve been getting it every second year for over a decade.
I’ve just sent one off last week and waiting for results.

And…. Here’s some news…. I was diagnosed with lupus over 3 years ago… every 6 months blood/urine test to see how markers are going.
Yesterday was telecall from arthritis specialist….
He asked how my joints were… I said okay… I go to gym once a week to keep flexible…
He said… my latest test was excellent!
I’m like huh?
He says I was something like 56 on some scale but now I’m 2.
First thing husband says was they must’ve got the blood mixed up with someone else!
Where I went she was a bit ditzy… putting things down amidst other samples and I reminded her where mine was.
So until September, my next blood/urid test, let’s see if I’m still good!
But I’m hoping it’s true and just feeling the joy for now Grin
