Such service should last at least the life of the car’s paint, but no, number plates are not made to high standards but deteriorate and must be replaced at the car owner’s expense, but still remain the property of the government. Now if you repaint them yourself you have committed an offence because the plates are reflective and must remain so.
Not a bad money spinner, make a defective product, hire it out at a fee, then lawfully force the hirer to replace it for, currently, $55. QLD costs - * Standard number plate replacement (same number and style): $33.90 * Standard number plate replacement (different number): $29.20 *Personalized plate replacement: Cost depends on the original plate style and is equivalent to the style fee. Example: If you have a standard yellow car plate and need to replace it, the replacement cost will be $55. And if they were made with the same standard of paint as most cars they wouldn't fade and would only need replacing if damsged. If they were enameled, like the early NSW plates they would’nt fade outlast a number of cars. You're joking right? The standard of factory paint is appalling. They get primer, one coat and a clear coat. Look around any parking lot - the number of cars with oxidisation of areas of paint under the clear... then the clear flaking off ... especially on bonnets, boots and hoods. All cars should be done with primer, then a two pac and then clear. Car restorers always use that to get a lasting finish. The paint fade on number plates should be the last of your worries. It is the least of my worries, what should worry taxpayers is that the government is making an inferior product then charging the taxpayers to rectify the problem. So a better paint system is needed, so why is it not implemented?
