New phone
Nov 25th, 2024 at 4:45pm

Got a new phone. Been looking for a wee while, upgraded from a S9 to a S23.
They had a 'black Friday' sale, still was a lot cheaper then 1 month ago.
Setup is ok so far.
Going on a big hollie next year so want a phone I knew and is pretty new.

I bought a new phone the other day too.

I went with Apple again (because it's easier to transfer everything over), but I want to try a Samsung next time.

All of my friend's Samsungs seem to be very good.

And, I have an old Samsung tablet and it's very good indeed.

But anyway, I'm happy with the new iPhone - took 5 minutes to set-up and transfer everything over from my old phone.

I think you say that because you've always used Apple. It's not hard to transfer your stuff from one Android phone to another. Samsung make it easy.

I don't have an Android - I have an Apple.

If I bought a Samsung, I'd have to transfer from Apple to Android.

There's this:

Copy apps & data from an iPhone to a new Android device

Anyway, next time ... maybe.

I'm very happy with the new iPhone.

My last few phones for me and wife, buy a refurbished Galaxy a few models old in excellent condition from Amazon, take it up to a 'trusted' phone place I've been going for years and get them to give it the once over. If OK, keep, if not, return at Amazons expense.

Yes, that was about my thinking too. These top named phones are really good.

HAHAH - has taken me over 30 minutes to swop over stuff on my S23 so far. Still going. Sure, the cable fell out 1/2 way and my battery was too flat in the old phone.
iphones have a top level rating, I did consider one.

This has an anti theft app, turned it on.
Turned the 'find my phone' app off, but will turn it back on

Found out how to put the E-sim in

Quote:
......  how to install eSIM on Samsung S23?

Step 1. Go to “Settings” > “Connections” > “SIM manager”.
Step 2. Tap “Add eSIM” and your mobile plan will be automatically downloaded and activated on your eSIM.     .......

Prob have to have the smart switches turned on both, location on.

My sims are really old. A new one is sensible. E-sim is prob better.

I've been using the transfer apps on Android for a while, but this was the first time when I got the S24 that I started fresh.

Backed up and restored everything manually, just to make sure some 10 year old crap I no longer need doesn't make it over to the new device.

I then cloned the new one back to my old one as a spare, ready to just login to all the messaging apps etc.

Yeah.

As long as you're not wedded to iOS, it's a much better hardware device and the cost is more worthwhile, even if the setup is a little longer.

But if you need iOS, there is no discussion, you need to go iPhone.

My last few phones have been Motorola's currently the G85 To me having about 3 features that I don't use isn't worth $1,000 plus for an I or S. Though they are better just not $1,000 better.

My Daughter dropped her rather new Apple and the sim stopped working, I suggested she try to go to her esim, It worked. She didn't originally know what I was talking about - 1 for the old guy.

Because you use a friggin cable! Use wifi.

Edit: If you are actually talking about eSIM, rather that transfering data,  then Samsung have supported it for years. It's your phone provider that doesn't support it, not Samsung.

legit ... I've had three phones in the last 25 yrs. I tend to keep them till they die. I've always had a traditional sim for each of them

Oh Sorry.

eSims have uses, but at least how the major telcos implement them here, a lot of that functionality is lost.

Basically, you'll get a QR code from the Telco that you can scan and it will add a virtual sim (eSim) rather than a physical one to your phone.

Most modern phones can have multiple eSims, but only 1 can be active at a time.

From a phone point of view, it's easier than having to open the device and put in a physical sim, plus lets say you have to have a work line, but don't want to carry 2 phones, rather than needing a dual sim phone, you can have a personal eSim, and a physical work sim and both can be active at once.

There are some devices that are too small to have a sim, some smart watches etc, so they'll need to be setup with an eSim etc.

On paper, they're easier because you don't need to worry about anything physical, the QR code can just be sent to you, but it means the sim is locked to that phone.  Generally, you can't swap it without contacting your Telco.

And with the way the majors work, you have to go into their store or wait for them to send a physical package, that looks like a normal SIM envelope, but it has a QR code rather than the SIM inside.  So at least locally here with the identify theft protections, yes it's a QR code that could be sent or setup in the telco app, but you still have to go into the store to prove your identity etc, so you might as well pick up a regular sim, especially if you want to easily swap between phones in the future.

The best use case for them at the moment is on smaller devices, and where supported, you need dual SIM but can only use a single physical sim in the phone.

I've got my personal line eSim'd to my phone, and the physical business Sim inserted so I don't need to carry around 2 phones.

She didn't originally know what I was talking about - 1 for the old guy.

I still have no idea what you are talking about ... whats an esim and why haven't i heard of it before? Cheesy Cheesy

Forgive me, but is that a legit question or sarcasm?

legit ... I've had three phones in the last 25 yrs. I tend to keep them till they die. I've always had a traditional sim for each of them

Most current gen phones have 2 sim options - a standard micro sim card and an esim (embedded sim - it is a logical sim built into the phone) A lot of providers support both or either.

yes, that is about me too. Buy them outright, look after them.
Had a S3, then S9, now S23.  I like odd numbers, honest,. I buy them according a lot to that.
About 1 every 4 years. Seems longer, they are not supported when I get another one.
