At least 41 people have been killed and 180 more wounded in a Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Poltava on Tuesday, president Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.

Zelenskiy said in a video that the Russian forces hit the city with two ballistic missiles, damaging a building of the Institute of Communications.

Russian forces launched two ballistic missiles against the city of Poltava on Sep. 3, killing at least 41 and injuring over 180 people, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported.

An educational institution and a neighboring medical facility were hit in the attack, which also partially destroyed the building of the Military Institute of Communications, according to Zelensky.

"The time interval between the alarm and the arrival of the deadly missiles was so short that it caught people during an evacuation to the bomb shelter," the Defense Ministry said.

Many people remain trapped under the rubble, while rescuers and medics continue to work at the scene. As of around 2 p.m. local time, the emergency services had rescued 25 people, 11 of whom were retrieved from the rubble, according to the ministry's statement.

"We express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims. This tragedy is yet another evidence of the enemy's cunning, which stops at no crime to try to intimidate Ukrainians," the ministry said.

"We urge everyone to remain calm and trust only official sources of information. Any speculation on this tragedy is unacceptable."

Zelensky said he had instructed an operational investigation into the circumstances of the attack on Poltava.

Poltava Oblast is located in central Ukraine and is a regularly target of Russian drone and missile attacks.

KYIV, Sept 3 (Reuters) - At least 41 people were killed and more than 180 wounded on Tuesday when Russia hit a military institute in the central town of Poltava, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said, in one of the deadliest single strikes of the war.
Zelenskiy said in a video that Russian forces struck with two ballistic missiles, damaging a building of the Military Institute of Communications.

He added that he had ordered a full and prompt investigation into the circumstances of the attack.

"The Russian scum will definitely be held accountable for this strike," Zelenskiy said on the Telegram messaging app.
He repeated his calls for more Western air defences and urged allies to allow their long-range weapons to be used for strikes deeper into Russian territory in order to protect Ukraine.

"We keep telling everyone in the world who has the power to stop this terror: air defence systems and missiles are needed in Ukraine, not in a warehouse somewhere.

"Long-range strikes that can protect us from Russian terror are needed now, not some time later. Unfortunately, every day of delay means loss of life."

Russian pro-war Telegram channels are reporting that the strike hit a training centre for the military and that the victims were cadets.

The normally well-informed Rybar channel says that "as a result of the attack, valuable communications and electronic warfare specialists were eliminated".

It says these specialists are difficult to replace quickly as they require lengthy training.

Many channels also say the strike was carried out with short-range ballistic Iskander missiles.

Neither of these claims have been verified by the BBC.

A Russian strike against a military educational facility in central Ukraine

according to Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s office, in one of the deadliest single attacks since the start of Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said preliminary information indicated two ballistic missiles hit the facility in the city of Poltava and a nearby hospital on Tuesday morning.

“We say again and again to everyone in the world who has the power to stop this terror: air defense systems and missiles are needed in Ukraine, not somewhere in a warehouse,” Zelensky said in a statement.

The head of the Poltava region military administration, Filip Pronin, announced the latest death toll on Telegram, adding that that rescue crews continue to clear and search through the debris at the site. Pronin said authorities believe up to 18 more people may be under the rubble.

At least 10 residential buildings were damaged at the military educational institution, he added.

Moscow has not commented on the attack, but a well-known Russian military blogger Vladimir Rogov reported earlier on Tuesday that Russia struck a military school in Poltava.

Speaking about the attack, President Zelensky repeated his call on Ukraine’s Western allies to supply Kyiv with more air defenses and lift restrictions on his country’s military using their weapons to strike inside Russia.

“Long-range strikes that can protect against Russian terror are needed now, not later. Every day of delay is, unfortunately, the death of people,” he added.

Russia targets Poltava military training center with devastating strike – Kiev

Russian Iskander ballistic missiles have struck a training center in the Ukrainian city of Poltava, according to the government in Kiev, which has estimated the death toll at 50.

The School of Military Communications and Information Technology on the north side of Poltava was home to the 179th Training Center of Ukrainian signalmen, including radar and strike drone operators. It was destroyed by two missiles on Tuesday morning, local authorities have said.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry has put the number of deaths at 49, with 219 injured. Rescue crews managed to save 25 people, of which 11 were pulled from the rubble, according to the military.

Poltava Governor Filip Pronin later updated the casualty toll to 50 dead, more than 235 wounded and 15 missing.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky used the occasion to demand more air defense systems and missiles, as well as permission from his Western backers to launch “long-range strikes” into Russia.

“This is a stunning tragedy for all of Ukraine,” Zelensky’s wife Elena wrote on X, accusing Russia of striking “an educational institution and a hospital,” even though no hospitals are nearby.

According to local media in Poltava, area hospitals are overwhelmed with wounded. Social media posts soliciting blood donations spoke of “190 dead defenders” and many more at risk from their injuries.

Igor Mosiychuk, a former MP and deputy commander of the notorious neo-Nazi Azov regiment, claimed that the attack may have resulted in up to 600 casualties. While blaming Russia for the strike, he also said the military command bears some responsibility for allowing so many high-value soldiers to be in one place without shelter.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not yet commented on the strike. In the absence of official information, rumors circulating on Russian social media have alleged the presence of NATO instructors at the school, including some from Sweden.
