I was playing Scrabble with this woman, and someone mentioned Aldi. She went into this rant about how they were unethical traders and she'd never buy anything there ...

Turns out her objection is that she couldn't "share in" their success by buying shares in Aldi. It's a privately owned company and (to this woman I know) that's not fair.

I think the excellence of Aldi is entirely about their buyers.

Aldi employs market experts to create new "brands" which are effectively Black And Gold or Coles brand. Sometimes they compete these brands against each other (Cowbelle v Westacre for one example.) But always they are captive brands. This wouldn't work if any of the products were crap, which is why I mention the Aldi buyers.

The opportunity is there for Coles or Woolworths to buy the best quality and put it on the shelves under a shonky brand name. But they have had years to do that, they're just wedded to brands.

The brands have invested billions in advertising, and their wholesale prices are inflated by that. I don't like advertising, so I have no sympathy when the consumer decides to trust Aldi and their buyers ... and their amusing brand names ... for the sake of lower prices.

You could be excused for thinking the ALDI Supermarket chain had done quite the "snow job" - for quite a few years - as has been the case with so called "consumer advocate" Choice Magazine (more on that later)

This is not the case with Canstar, who remain a bit of a mystery.
All we know is Canstar and Aldi have "financial agreements" tied to awards.

ALDI deny this - Canstar have "no comment"

These "financial agreements" are believed to run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars
Canstar - a single, family-owned business - do none of their own (real or imagined) polling.

(it's a LITTLE ironic, that ONE "wholly family-owned company", should ONLY give out all of its awards to ANOTHER "wholly family-owned company" ?  Maybe there's a club ?  BUT I DIGRESS)

Canstar farmed this research out to a third party named Colmar Brunton, which in 2021, was sold to a fourth party, New Zealand owned The Kantar Group - whose main business is in polling for New Zealand political parties

Neither ALDI, Canstar, Colmar Brunton or The Kantar group will divulge any information on sample size, phone or in person method - or questions asked - in the way any other pollster does, for credibility

All we know is, that every year, ALDI wins the Canstar Award for "Best Supermarket" (with no criteria revealed) - and generally "Best Whiskey available in Australia" (I'm wondering how Glenfiddich and Chivas Royal polled) - not to mention "Best Shiraz" - to "Best Blue vein Cheese" - to Best Champagne" (among MANY other "awards") - all with Aldi "exclusives" - unavailable elsewhere

... and with a mere 10% of shopper actually BUYING from ALDI ?

If the "polling" was carried out ONLY inside ALDI stores it would be completely legal - and explain ALL of these "results" - so I'm going with THIS scenario.

Back on Choice Magazine - who claim that a "basket" of goods from ALDI, was substantially cheaper than the same "basket" purchased from Coles or Woolworths

This is at best, misleading
At worst, it is a LIE.

The "basket" purchased from Coles or Woolworths, comprised of premium product brands.
ALDI do NOT SELL "premium product brands"
'So we have Coles or Woolworths "premium product brands" - being compared to ALDI home brands, generics and plain wraps.

I'm not privy to the ALDI/Choice "financial agreements"

But it is disingenuous of Choice Magazine to NOT be comparing ALDI home brands, generics and plain wraps. - with Coles and Woolworths home brands, generics and plain wraps.

I'd first thought the pro-Australian, pro-union Whitenight OzPolitics scribe must have had shares in ALDI - till I discovered ALDI is not listed on any stock exchange

ALDI, world-wide, is owned ENTIRELY by one German man - and his children, taking 100% of the profits from sales in every ALDI store - Australia included.

It's rare for me to describe ANYONE as "un-Australian" - John Howard, aside - but if any dictionary listed the phrase un-Australian" - I would be sure it showed a passionate embrace, shared by

I can understand your outrage, that corporations trading in Australia do not allow any Australian ownership (or putative profits returned to Australians, by share inflation or by dividends.)

But hasn't the horse already escaped the stables? Neither Coles nor Woolworhs is majority Australian owned.

In a perfect world, foreigners would not be permitted to invest in perfectly Australian companies like Woolworths or BHP. But in that same world, Australians would not be able to invest in Samsung or FOX.

Is it really such an offence against the people, that there is a foreign company doing business in Australia, that they can't invest in? Seems like a rich people's problem, that you want to punish Aldi customers for.

Australia's best supermarket has been revealed - and it's NOT Coles or Woolworths
Aldi has been crowned Australia's best supermarket   Smiley

Daily Mail
22 August 2024
Aldi has been named Australia's best-rated supermarket for the seventh consecutive year.   Smiley

The German supermarket giant was crowned with the prestigious Most Satisfied Customers Award as part of Canstar Blue's Supermarket Satisfaction Ratings for 2024.

Aldi towered over competitors by receiving stellar five-star ratings across all seven categories - including value for money, freshness of produce, product range, checkout experience and customer service.

This is Aldi's twelfth win since Canstar's Supermarket Satisfaction Ratings began in 2011.

Simon Padovani-Ginies, Group Director for Aldi Australia, said Aldi is proud to have maintained its leadership and satisfaction for customers at a time when they need it the most.

'Being credited as the only five-star rated supermarket for overall satisfaction shows our day-in-day-out commitment to delivering market-leading prices on high quality goods is resonating with our shoppers,' he said.

'Customers deserve great value for money and quality products when shopping for groceries, so this is a proud win for Aldi and our many Australian business partners who always aim to exceed the expectations of our shoppers with the excellent products on our shelves.

'This award win would not have been possible without the support of our loyal customers. We want to assure them that our Price Promise remains as firm today as it always has - we won't be beaten on the cost of the weekly shop.

Aldi Australia was crowned with the prestigious Most Satisfied Customers Award at Canstar Blue's Supermarket Satisfaction Ratings for 2024

'We take this commitment seriously and every day, every element of our business is oriented around how we can deliver Australia's lowest prices, especially now at a time when families need it most,' he continued.

'We look forward to continuing to keep our customers satisfied with our Good Different shopping experience.'

Last month Aldi Australia once again shut down rumours of plans to offer online shopping.

For years customers have wondered if the discount supermarket will launch the service to compete with other retailers.

But an Aldi Australia spokesperson told FEMAIL the company is prioritising other services for now.

'While we are always looking at the best ways to serve our customers, right now we are focused on delivering value and the lowest prices possible at a time our customers need it most,' the spokesperson said.

This is Aldi's twelfth win since Canstar's Supermarket Satisfaction Ratings began in 2011

'We won't compromise our ability to deliver low-priced groceries to Australians.'

For now, customers can still keep up to date with Aldi's 'Special Buys' and deals on the website - but an online delivery service remains unavailable.

Earlier this year Aldi started offering a new service to Australian customers amid the cost of living crisis - and it has nothing to do with the supermarket.

The supermarket giant launched Aldi Insurance offering home and contents, comprehensive car and landlord's insurance policies.

Bollocks. They're as manipulative as Coles & Woolies.

Both Coles and Woolworths - and their parent companies ARE "majority" Australian owned - with many Australian Superannuation Funds and insurance companies being the largest shareholders.

Right down to the Coles' check-out staff, who are encouraged to buy shares in the company - and many do.
Coles are already WAY ahead of ALDI on Australian ownership, with ALDI being the epitome of capitalism in 'the grocery wars'

I've not done an analysis the Woolworths business model - due to them being the larget owner of poker machine in the county - so I'm a Coles dude - all the WAY.

I, also, don't buy into this whole Coles/Woolworths conspiracy theory, where they both sit down at a big table, every Monday, to jointly fix their prices for the week.
BOTH retailers are VERY competitive, where a percentage point either way, can mean the difference of profit or loss.

But back on this "Best Supermarket" claim, NO chain could win that vote with only ten-percet of voters (I assume ?) actually BEING shoppers with ALDI.

...

It is NOT such an offence against the people, that there is a foreign company doing business in Australia.

But I'd MUCH rather support an Australian trader knowing at least half its profits were fed back into the interests of the Australian people (as superannuation funds), as opposed to ALDI, where all of the profits are sent to Germany, into the pockets of ONE GERMAN BILLIONAIRE,

if any of these figures were correct, Aldi would have a substantial market share - and not the measly10% they hold at the moment

The Choice surveys are all bullsh!t as well.
They take the price of premium brand lines in Coles and Woolworths - and compare them with home-brands and budget lines in Aldi stores

... and i just can't believe the number of people fooled by ANY of their marketing strategies

Aldi are good value. Always shop there first, then get other stuff from other supermarkets (IGA, Woolies, Coles) but…. I hardly buy meat…. and if I can’t get to my organic, grass fed butcher shop, I do do buy the premium grass fed meat if supermarkets have them, same with chicken, and eggs. I don’t look at the price… I read where it all came from and how it’s reared, fed, etc

Re: bread, I do love the coles/Woolies bakery the best.

Oh… and their weekly “half price” specials! Worth going into the bigger supermarkets just for the bread and if the half price specials are at an advantage for my uses.
(Not the sugary drink crap or rubbish packet chips)

We shop at coles, because the vegetables stay fresher longer, if we buy Aldi you have to use them within two days or they are just awful.

If we look at ingredients then Aldi have a lot more preservatives and additives in the foods we buy.

People living in Australia who,
1/ live beyond 60km from a capital city and
2/ have close access to 'a' supermarket
are lucky fortunate, imo.

If you live in Australia, and live outside of a capital city, it is 'common' that you would not have access to a supermarket 'experience' [and their competitive pricing].

For myself.....#01 YES, #02 YES.

But i have a friend who would have to answer.....#01 YES, #02 NO.

My friend has complained to me, that from time to time, he has to plan trips 60km-70km away,
to a neighbouring large town, to have access a supermarket 'experience' [and the competitive pricing there].

You shop at Colesworth - the same investment companies are major shareholders for both.

So in reality they aren't a duopoly, they're a monopoly.

Quote:
There are 8 Investment companies that are institutional shareholders in both Woolies and Coles holding similar sized share portfolios in each.

* US based State Street Global Advisors Ltd have a 6.17% stake in Woolies and 6.17% in Coles.

* US based The Vanguard Group Inc. own 5.19% in Woolies and 5.74% in Coles.

*US based Blackrock Fund Advisors of which both Vanguard & State Street are shareholders has  1.83% share in Woolies and 2% in Coles.

*US based Geode Capital Management has 1.02% share in Woolies and a 1.06% share in Coles.

*Norwegian based Norges Bank Investment Management has a 1.73% share in Woolies and a 1.69% share in Coles.

*Australian based Australian Foundation Investment Co has a 0.55% share in Woolies and a 0.65% share in Coles.

*Australian based Australian Super Ltd has a 4.99% share in Coles.

*Australian based Netwealth Investments Ltd. owns a 0.55% share in Woolies.(Us based Vanguard Group has a 1.6% share in Netwealth)

https://markets.ft.com/data/equities/tearsheet/profile?s=WOW:ASX

https://markets.ft.com/data/equities/tearsheet/profile?s=COL:ASX

So The Big 2 are owned by the same companies often represented in the Institutional Shareholders list as 2 different entities with same name and different end titles i.e. Group or Investments.

A month or so ago a report by the Productivity Commission said they were the most profitable supermarkets in the world. Their "return on equity" is 3 times more profitable than our banking industry. And our banking industry has the most profitable return on equity in the world.

Supermarkets in America have a return on equity of about 1.4% - Coles have 34% return on equity.

If that doesn't remove some of the haze from your eyes about how the Australian public is being cheated and ripped off every which way but loose then I don't know what will.

By the Big 4 Banks, the fraudulent treasonous corporate consulting firms like PWC, KPMG, Ernst& Young and Deloitte, Coles & Woolies, Qantas, the ALP & the LNP.
