Aurora Australis visible from QLD tonight

Spectacular southern lights might be seen as far north as Queensland after ‘extreme’ solar storm

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/article/2024/may/11/spectacular-aurora-australis-might-be-seen-as-far-north-as-queensland-after-extreme-solar-storm

Bureau of Meteorology says aurora australis could be visible near Sydney and Perth between Saturday 10pm and Sunday 2am, while warning of storm’s impacts

Aurora australis could be visible from Sydney, Perth and even parts of Queensland this weekend, after an “extreme” geomagnetic solar storm.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned the storm that creates the beautiful auroras could also threaten infrastructure and essential services, including power supply.

The BoM’s space weather forecasting centre said the storm’s effects reached Earth on Friday night and would continue to Sunday morning.

The best time to see the aurora australis is between Saturday 10pm and Sunday 2am, from a dark spot with unobstructed views south.

You both need to pay respect to the Rainbow Parrot in the sky or you will be banned from seeing it.

As far north as Queensland—that is SOME aurora!

More than one Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is hitting us. Solar storm has reached 5—extreme.

The X5.9 solar flare that wrote finis to any idea of a GSM now may or may not have a CME associated with it.

Aurora australis

Sounds highly pretentious.

Or just move to Finland, Northern Canada or that frozen shithole Alaska where you can watch that touristy crap all night.

Had a 5 hour power outage this evening, but I doubt it was the aurora, more likely the power company's usual lack of proper maintenance

I'll have to miss this one out. Seen it before and everyone should see the Northern Lights at least once in their lives. Enjoy it while it last

I live too far north to see the lights. Although there are people saying that the conditions are right for us to see the Aurora Australis from as far north as where I live.

I could see a rather thin colour across the southern sky earlier - and last night when it was very cloudy down there.  The pink and orange... of course - we don't have city lights.  Back down on the farm we'd have clear sky.

I look up at the sky at night and see the stars shine brightly. But, when I went to Kilcoy for a wedding some years ago, we sat outside at night and I saw the most spectacular starry sky I have ever seen. I mean seriously, the sky looked so picturesque that I wish I could have the camera to photograph the scene.

Aurora Australis might be amazing. But it does not compare to a light pollution free starry sky.
