Making your dog’s food more nutritious for cents

Seems to be big on eggs. Eggs are good for you and for Fido. Cheap? Plenty protein and fat. Raw eggs—dogs’ teeth and digestion systems are built for raw ingredients.

Socks’ dinner contains cooked pasta and frozen veg—these have been cooked a bit I guess before being frozen.

I have some training and experience in this area so for what it may be worth here is a healthy canine diet suggestion. Personally I'm a supporter of the BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) theory/ system. Remove the grains from your dog that are used as fill in so much "mass produced for retail" dog food ( not all "experts" agree on the entire removal of grains as they are a source of carbohydrate some say should still be included in small amounts). A quick and relatively cheap way to feed your dogs a healthy diet is to grab a kilo of minced beef, a packet of thawed mixed veg, 1 egg (including the shell)  and run it through a blender. Divide into meal sizes appropriate for your dog and freeze. If you want to go next level, grate and steam the vegies so they are closer to resembling the stomach contents of herbivorous animals and add occasional offal. If money isn't really an issue and you can't be arsed making your own than you can purchase BARF dog food at most pet stores.

Socks gets raw pet mince in the morning. That is as much meat as she needs.

I do have some grain in her dinner—the pasta. Really reckon that is bad? I know kibble is not just highly processed but full of rice, a filler.

Will buy another bag frozen veg and keep the pasta for myself. Maybe add another egg or two.

I spent years actually working in the canine behavioural field and saw enough to know most dogs locked in back yards do not need high energy carbs in their diets. I know the show ring diets include rice and various oils for energy and coat etc but the last thing most "yarded" dogs need is more energy. I pretty much preach removal of all grains now having seen the benefits in assisting behavioural modification. If your dogs waste hasn't changed to a light grey or white colour within a few days/week of elimination, they are not fully digesting the grains in the diet anyway.

I will change Socks’ dinner composition by removing the pasta and adding more frozen veg. Add more eggs and cheese.

You can always replace grain based carbs with sweet potato and pumpkin if you desire but no; I wouldn't be feeding any pasta. Don't increase the cheese. Dogs don't do well on high dairy, not sure why you are feeding your dog that. They have little lactase for breaking down lactose. Otherwise "Socks" obviously has a caring, considerate owner so I'm sure compared to many, he/she/they/them is fine Smiley

Cheese does not contain lactose, must end up in the wey or something. Half a block of cheese into 8 baggies not too much.

She will be lure coursing for a few months starting next weekend, will be walking her more, give her more runs in local dog parks.

Socks is a bitch but was desexed in an RSPCA shelter. Adopted her when she was 19 weeks old and 12Kg in weight. Now 2yo and 26Kg. A staghound but with the wrong head for her body, possible American staffy in the line.

I think cheese does have lactose, the hard cheeses have less but it's in there. Anyway that's your call. Sight hounds and lure coursing; match made in heaven lol. Although I have seen a Dachshund do it to! Always nice to hear good owners looking after their pets well. Smiley

Haven’t seen any daschunds yet at the meets.

Border collies are hopeless, try to round up the lures or something  Grin

Sight coursing hounds—staghounds, greyhounds and whippets etc—do the best, stick to the lures and run at speed.

Terriers, little slow terriers do OK—I guess their prey drive keeps them chasing the lure.
