There have been large numbers of data breaches from Govt sites.

The Govt can't be trusted with our data.

You can only pass if you have the correct ID pass to do so.

I thought this bit of the article was funny. It's telling you "If you don't support this bill you are a right-wing nut-job". Typical of the ABC these days.

Feeling a tad guilty there are you choo choo? It doesn't say that at all. What it says is that the opposition and the right wing crossbenchers voted against it. Do you think the ABCs political reporters don't know where on the political spectrum the members sit? Cheesy

So no lefties were against it? Do you have a vote count of who voted what for us, Mimo? After all, I'm apparently right-wing according to some on here, even extreme right-wing according to Phil, I think the ABC is biased. I was once a staunch supported of the ABC but I'm being pushed into the "sell it off" camp.

I don't know who voted for and against it. That's why,  unlike you, I'm not pretending I do know.  And I don't give a crap what camp your butt hurt is pushing onto. Your argument was totally made up and you can't use Phil as an excuse for your stupidity.

No point engaging with you, you're an idiot.

When you stop acting like a dumbarse,  I'll think about stopping calling you a dumbarse.  Until then you're a dumbarse.  This makes your data safer , not less safe. Right now you give countless corporations your date of birth,  address,  name, lic. number etc. With this system they don't need to store any of that.  All they need is your govt. I'd number.  Personally rather the government store my data than companies like optus or medibank. Government already has your details anyway.

Wrong again.  The true idiot is the one making things up.

And I'm well aware that you won't have an option. You already have no option but to provide your I'd for certain services.  Nothing changes except instead of 100 companies each storing my details, only the government stores my details.  And here's a newsflash,  government already has all your details.   Grin

Here's one example:

The Govt looking after our defence data:

https://www.skynews.com.au/australia-news/defence-and-foreign-affairs/russian-cy...

Russian cyber hackers compromise top-secret defensive data in historic breach

June 17, 2023 - 6:56AM

There are concerns over data obtained by Russian cyber hackers from law firm HWL Ebsworth this week
after more than 2.5 million documents were downloaded across multiple overseas jurisdictions.

The data breach is one of the largest in Australia's history and has seen key Defence and Foreign Affairs material compromised including files related to top-secret missile testing sites and sensitive information on Australia's engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.

Crisis talks are underway in Canberra as the government seeks to mitigate further risks.

You posted rubbish.  Your first article is about courts being hacked. That's all public information anyway. You can find all the details about court cases in the public domain anyway.  Whoopdedoo.
Do you understand that the level of protection govts give information depends on what that information is anyway? Purchase orders for copy paper aren't as protected as the personnel details etc. A link that someone downloaded some files doesn't prove anything.

The government already has your data dumbarse

Don't call me a dumbarse - you dumbarse.

Our data is not safe now and it will be more unsafe with this new legislation.   Roll Eyes

Read this page you dumbarse:

https://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1711594717/15#15

And? You think corporations run for profit are going to do a better job of stopping hackers?  Grin

They do have more incentive to stop hackers. If google gets breached, massive losses. If govco gets breached?

Google sells your data. That's all they're interested in protecting.  How did optus go at protecting your data?

Excellently, as I've never used optus.

Yes I'd run away if I were you too.

You post nonsense - I post evidence to back up what I say -
again:

https://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1711594717/15#15

Read the whole page if you can.  Roll Eyes

Dept of Defence -

2.5 million secret documents were downloaded

I don't think the government will  'well look after anything you dumbarse.  But I think they will do a better job than 1000 random corporations.  Plus one person protecting my data is easier than 1000 corporations trying to protect my data.

You should stay away from conspiracy sites and face reality.  Your data will be out there regardless of this id becoming reality or not It's just who is responsible for protecting it that will change.

Don't call me a dumbarse - you dumbarse.

If you give a private company your details - scans of passports or drivers licenses
that information will sit on their server for 10 years or more.
It's then open to hacking.
However if you give the same company your Govt digital ID will they make sure to erase all
the other information they have about you?   Undecided

What's the bet that hackers will get in no matter where the data is stored if it's online -
in both Govt. and private company servers?

Also - the Optus hack -
10 million people had their drivers licenses info put out for sale on the dark web including me.
Why was Optus forced by Govt. to make people give up
their drivers license information to get a SIM card?
I remember - national security - well how much national security was compromised then?
The Govt caused the problem with their excessive laws.

Digital ID:

iris scans,
video face scans for face recognition by computers using AI - even in crowds,
audio sampling of your voice,
finger prints,
palm prints,
license scans,
passport scans,
birth certificate scans,
medicare information,
tax information,
Centerlink information about every private detail,
social media postings,
political affiliations.

Is this the mark of the beast spoken of in the Bible?
I thought it was just a tattoo?

That isn't what he said.

He said they would not do worse than the 10,000 companies that currently have it and have virtually no security on it at all. Difficult to refute that as it is correct.

I said that the gate has been open for a decade and there are no horses left in the stable to protect anyway. It's pointless either way.

No dumbarse,  criminals caused the problem.  Everytime someone finds a way to scam the system,  things get tougher for everyone.  Optus had to get customers details because after every terrorist incident,
you and others like you were crying that they should be able to tell who phoned who etc. Guess what dumbarse,  the only way they can tell who phoned or texted who is if the phone companies record the details of whoever buys the phone or sim in the first place.

You are just TOO thick, bozo. Just thick and stupid.

Date: February 2019

Impact: Multiple political party networks - Liberal, Labor, and the Nationals.

Date: April 2020

Impact: 104,000 people

47 Service NSW staff email accounts were hacked through a series of phishing attacks. This led to 5 million documents being accessed, 10 percent of which contains sensitive data impacting 104,000 people

Date: November 2018

Impact: 200,000 students

The Australian National University (ANU) fell victim to a highly sophisticated cyber attack that shocked even the most experienced Australian security experts. Furthermore, the attack wasn’t discovered until nearly six months later.

Date: February 2021

Impact: 4400 emails

Personal and business emails across thousands of territories have been leaked following a breach of the Northern Territory's COVID-19 check-in app.

Date: March 2021

Sorry JS but data breaches are kept low key. There is not a Bank that hasn't been hacked as 1 example.

Remember when a guy was prosecuted for hacking a government DB? The Medicare DB was hacked in 2022.

Sorry DNA, but your link is about a law firm that was hacked. Govts, like everyone else, don't work in a bubble. Like every other organisation,  the information they have sometimes needs to go to third parties.  Information is useless if it cannot be used in the real world. That is the reality of the digital world we live in.

It's not a coincidence that the government is laying the foundation for increased surveillance of law-abiding citizens while appearing cavalier about refugee rapists and murderers set free in the community.

The Govt forced those companies to do it by law.

David Bowie - 1984.

[Verse 1]
Someday they won't let you
Now you must agree
The times they are a-telling
Changing isn't free
You've read it in the papers, tracks are on TV
Beware the savage jaw of 1984

They'll split your pretty cranium, fill it full of air
Tell that you're eighty, brother, you won't care
You'll be shooting up on anything, tomorrow's never there
Beware the savage jaw of 1984

[Chorus]
Come see, come see, remember me?
We played out an all night movie role
You said it would last, but I guess we enrolled
In 1984 (who could ask for more)
1984 (who could ask for mor-or-or-or-ore)
(Mor-or-or-or-ore)

[Verse 2]
I'm looking for a vehicle,looking for a ride
Looking for a party, looking for a side
Looking for the reason that I knew in '65
Beware the savage jaw of 1984

You idiot.
The Govt caused all the problems in the first place.
example -
they imported all the Muslims and
then when the Muslims started their terrorism they had to put
high scrutiny and excessive surveillance on everyone.
It would have been easier to just keep Muslims out in the first place.  Roll Eyes

It's not about the Govt having your data .... it's about hackers gaining access to Govt servers ... and despite Smiths BS protestations it hasn't happened ... it has.

Neil Oliver

We hear a lot about the matching butt cheeks
that are our political parties
And how left and right are meaningless terms
but you couldn’t get a cigarette paper
between the mainstream political parties
on account of them having merged into one anti-human blob
serving not us but the big corporations and unelected NGOs
that are their paymasters.
Well, it turns out the butt in question the big fat bottom
that is the authorities is growing bigger every moment
swelling to absorb even more.
By now East and West once confidently used as a shorthand
for the differences between totalitarianism and freedom
appear to be two more big flabby cheeks of the same backside .......

meaningless waffle.

No one is arguing hackers don't hack. This article is about expanding the mygov id. No one is able to show that mygov was ever hacked. That doesn't mean it can't be. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before it is. What it does mean is that the mygov security is far superior to anything that optus, medicbank, a law firm, politicians emails or any other corporation uses.

But why would the Dept. of Defense give 2.5 million top secret documents to a law firm?

The Govt is still responsible.
Heads should roll.
Why should we ever trust them?

The Govt looking after our defence data:

https://www.skynews.com.au/australia-news/defence-and-foreign-affairs/russian-cy...

Russian cyber hackers compromise top-secret defensive data in historic breach

June 17, 2023 - 6:56AM

There are concerns over data obtained by Russian cyber hackers from law firm HWL Ebsworth this week
after more than
2.5 million documents
were downloaded across multiple overseas jurisdictions.
