Victoria’s courts have been hit by a cyber attack allegedly at the hands of Russia-based hackers.

In a statement released by Court Services Australia, the attack occurred just before Christmas on 8 December and resulted in unauthorised users gaining access to recordings of hearings that occurred over a seven-week period, from 1 November to 21 December 2023.

“On Thursday, 21 December 2023, Court Services Victoria (CSV) was alerted to a cyber security incident impacting Victoria’s courts and tribunals,” wrote Louise Anderson, chief executive officer of Court Services Victoria.

“The cyber incident led to unauthorised access leading to the disruption of the audio-visual in-court technology network, impacting video recordings, audio recordings and transcription services.”

The accessed hearings include those in the Supreme Court, County Court, practice court, Coroners Court, the Court of Appeal’s criminal division, one hearing in the Children’s Court and regional hearings.

“We understand this will be unsettling for those who have been part of a hearing. We recognise and apologise for the distress that this may cause people.”

Aboriginal child protection service contracted by SA government hit by data breach

An Aboriginal community organisation that provides services to children under government protection in South Australia has been hit by a data breach, impacting about a thousand community members.
Key points:

Aboriginal Family Support Services (AFSS) detected the data breach on November 27
Personal information, such as payment details and identification documents, may have been compromised
The child protection department said there was no access to, or any breach of SA government IT systems

The Department for Child Protection said Aboriginal Family Support Services (AFSS), which is contracted by the South Australian government, detected the breach on November 27.

The department said personal information, such as payment details and identification documents, may have been compromised.

NDIA detects data breach

28 November 2023

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has detected a data breach involving the alleged unauthorised disclosure of the personal details of some National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants and related parties.

The information that was disclosed involved some details recorded in the NDIA’s system; including:

Full name
Date of birth
Gender
Address, including postcode

In a small number of cases, the Agency is aware of further details being disclosed.

All impacted individuals will be directly contacted by the NDIA.

An NDIA staff member has been arrested and charged with the alleged unauthorised disclosure of information to two individuals who had been acting as NDIS providers.

The pair have been barred from delivering supports to NDIS participants, with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission issuing banning orders against the individuals and two associated provider companies.

One of these individuals has also been arrested and charged in relation to this matter.

The NDIA continues to actively monitor the situation.

Federal police caught up in huge law firm data breach

Federal police officers have been caught up in a major cyber attack that's exposed a number of government departments.

The Australian Federal Police Association (AFPA) confirmed some members had their data breached in the hack on law firm HWL Ebsworth earlier this year.

The association did not reveal what data had been stolen but reports suggest it includes officer names and email addresses.

Bookstore chain Dymocks also confirmed it had been the subject of a major data breach, in a notice to customers released late on Friday.

More than 1.24 million Dymocks customers have had their names, address, phone, email, birth date and other information leaked and made available on the dark web.

THE private details of campers booking at Wilson’s Promontory’s Tidal River campground have had their user details compromised by the State Government’s new website.

The government website states, “Parks Victoria has temporarily paused camping and accommodation bookings for the 2023-24 season as we work with our booking system.”

Parks Victoria campsite booking system which crashed on its first day of operation, remains closed as a result.

The booking system remains unavailable for phone or online bookings.

Home Affairs inadvertently leaks personal data of 50 small businesses

The Department of Home Affairs confirmed overnight that it was responsible for an “inadvertent” release of personal data related to 50 small businesses that took part in a recent cyber security survey.

The data was posted to a parliamentary website in response to a question taken on notice during Senate estimates hearings in May and has since been taken down.

Speaking to The Guardian, a Home Affairs spokesperson said that the department was “aware of a potentially unintentional data release”.

“The department will consider its obligations in accordance with the Privacy Act, including contacting impacted individuals.”

Russian cyber hackers compromise top-secret defensive data in historic breach

There are concerns over data obtained by Russian cyber hackers from law firm HWL Ebsworth this week after more than 2.5 million documents were downloaded across multiple overseas jurisdictions.

The data breach is one of the largest in Australia's history and has seen key Defence and Foreign Affairs material compromised including files related to top-secret missile testing sites and sensitive information on Australia's engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.

Crisis talks are underway in Canberra as the government seeks to mitigate further risks.

This digitilisation just causes a whole new set of problems. Hackers will have it for breakfast, especially if they get their hands on quantum computers.

Right now, all over the world they're hoovering up and storing our presently encrypted information, waiting to crack the encryption when the quantum computers come along.

I think this digital Id is just a continuation of Labor's wet dream of social control since Bob Hawke's Australia card. So far, the system is voluntary but you know, they'll say this and that is happening and we need to tighten up. It's China's social credit system by a thousand cuts.
