Not so much overlooked, more like warning signs heeded.

Pretending to be a 'they' does highlight neuroticism, pretentiousness, captiousness and the likelihood of disruption. Such applicants announce that they expect everyone to indulge their tedious psychodrama and pretend along with them, demanding that others lie and ignore or contradict the evidence right in front of them daily is, in short, rude and an act of hostility.
No wonder ther are overlooked.
