Had one in a tree in backyard. It would sh!t everywhere.

I got rid of it with a pump up high powered water pistol. I think it moved to my neighbors place.

Hello Possums

😂🤣😆

I've got one too! I found him/her looking down at me from the corner of our back patio last night.

I couldn't figure it out at first as it was around 8.30 pm and I was going round locking up the house, the gates etc and checking everything when from the corner of my eye 👁 I noticed something very strange. Was it a cat? Was it a rat? Was it a bat? It was a possum. And it's found a home up in the corner of my back patio.

I called WIRES today (because I'd never come across a possum before so I wasn't sure about what to do). The lady from WIRES outlined how sensitive and careful we needed to be about moving this possum away from the house and somewhere close by (so it didn't get a shock). Apparently these animals are protected and fines apply if you mistreat them. I asked them if they could do this for us as we wanted to learn how to do it properly for next time.

Their response?

We don't do that anymore. Call your local PEST CONTROL guy.

My response?

PEST CONTROL? You mean like spiders, cockroaches and mice???

Yep .. the guy who sorts out spiders, cockroaches and mice is required. WIRES reckons it's going to cost us around $100 to $200 to get this possum off the back patio and into a neighbouring local council tree. Seems ridiculous. There's gotta be a more sensible and cost effective way of sorting out our little unwanted visitor.

Note: I've NEVER ever called a pest control guy. Why? I don't want their pesticides anywhere near my home or family or pets. I'm very particular about cleanliness so I've not had any pest control issues thus far.

We had a family of them at one time. they got into the roof. it was party time in the night.

I put a bright light in the man hole over night and they went away.

Had a friend that borrowed a trap to catch them and took them to a tree in the bush, likely where they came from.

Another time there were a few just hanging around but they were no trouble and just went away after a month or so.

When I was young there was a family of them in the tree, In the late afternoon I would have a cuppa outside and they would often come down and sit at the end of the table.

Oh. So possums are not pests like mice or spiders or cockroaches. Your childhood sounds hilarious btw.

I think I'll need to find a way to catch this one. I've got fruit and veg growing front n back so I'm scared our visitor might start attacking those. Plus our adjoining neighbour has a huge mango tree...and it overhangs slightly into our yard so I'm nervous about the mangoes on it being eaten by our visitor.

I might have to just bite the bullet and pay someone to come and move it away.

Possums will kill a lot of pests like rats and roaches and snakes. They can eat up to 4,000 ticks in a week.

They won't attack fruit and veg they will just eat it. They are not aggressive or destructive.

Dog fur left around may encourage them to go somewhere else.  A fight with a cat can go either way with one survivor.

They will eat birds occasionally.
