Coal is a no no... so is solar apparently.

Energy giant AGL has announced it will close the Loy Yang A power
station in Victoria's Latrobe Valley up to 10 years earlier than planned,
targeting the end of 2035 financial year. Loy Yang A provides around
30% of Victoria's electricity needs. Presumably B will continue to
operate until 2048, the original closure date of both A and B.

But...

A planned solar farm in Mudgee, NSW, population 12,000, has the town
divided with many fiercely opposed. The proposal is to install 25,000
photovoltaic panels, which has pitted the company against the town.
The mayor, local businesses and ordinary residents all oppose the proposal,
which has already been knocked back three times by the Mid-Western
Regional Council.

So...

Everybody's screaming for green rather than black, but when it comes
to putting that into practice, all the NIMBYs start wailing and gnashing
their teeth with all sorts of vacuous excuses against wind and solar.

This image is invariably published to illustrate the pollution being
emitted from coal-fired power stations...

Okay... I don't deny the pollutants emitted from the burning of coal
are exacerbating the global warming crisis, but this dramatic image
may be misinterpreted by many non-technical types.

Firstly of course, the image was captured looking east, on a very cold
foggy morning, with the sun just about to rise.

And all those clouds of "pollutants"? Steam from the cooling towers.
Any lead, mercury, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulates, or
various other heavy metals. Nope. No, no, and no.

Just hydrogen and oxygen. That's it.

But it certainly looks ominous doesn't it? Just what the greenies want.

Which pollutants? Aerosols, most of the pollutants, cause cooling.

Secondly, I know off at least 4 people who have had their cars repainted by BHP because of pollutants from the Port kembla steel works.

Yes. Water samples from the Darcy Road drain running directly
downstream from nearby heavy industries at the outer harbour of
Port Kembla showed arsenic, lead, copper, zinc, strontium, selenium,
uranium and other heavy metals were all dangerously elevated.

Incidentally, Loy Yang A emitted 16.6 million tonnes of greenhouse
gas in 2019-20, according to most recent data. Australia in total
emitted 513.4 million tonnes during the same period. Or only 3%
of that from Loy Yang A.
