A new virus—the Langya virus

What Is This New Langya Virus? Do We Need to Be Worried?

. . .It’s related to Hendra and Nipah viruses, which cause disease in humans. However, there’s much we don’t know about the new virus—known as LayV for short—including whether it spreads from human to human. . .

Symptoms reported appeared to be mostly mild—fever, fatigue, cough, loss of appetite, muscle aches, nausea and headache—although we don’t know how long the patients were unwell.

A smaller proportion had potentially more serious complications, including pneumonia, and abnormalities in liver and kidney function. However, the severity of these abnormalities, the need for hospitalisation, and whether any cases were fatal were not reported.

I was reading about this earlier today. All of these viruses emerging and re-emerging should definitely be a cause for concern.

All of a sudden I feel like I'm back in January 2020 when we were hearing the same thing about SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).

Before we know it this thing will probably be all over the globe - just like Covid and now monkeypox. Polio seems to be making a 'comeback' as well.

All while governments all over the world (including ours) continue to stick their fingers in their ears and tell us "nothing to worry about - carry on".

Déjà vu again.

The only "bedwetters" I know of are the ones who appear to be too afraid to have their COVID-19 vaccinations, Sir Nail.

Or wear a mask to protect themselves and others.

If this Langya virus does become a major problem and a vaccine is available then I will not hesitate to have it.

If you try to control something that you can't control, the result is a lot of frustration and wasted energy, not to mention loss of credibility.

The main thing you would need to control would be human behaviour,  and maybe that is possible in China or North Korea, but very few other places.

It will be interesting to see if ba.2.75 (Centaurus) will eventually become dominant as ba.5 has done, or become yet another regional variant or die out.

Nobody knows yet.

The Langya virus was first discovered in 2018.  And over the past 3 to 4 years, have infected around 30 people.  Unless there is a change in DNA of the virus, it is not at the scale of COVID.
