"A petition "praying" for the Northern Territory government to suspend access to gender-affirming care for children has been tabled in parliament.

Speaker Robyn Lambley stepped down from the chair to submit the petition on behalf of the Australian Christian Lobby that "prays... all medical and surgical transitioning treatments for children in the Northern Territory," be suspended to "protect them from further injury".

Ms Lambley was brief in her submissions on Thursday simply stating the petition, with 463 signatures, met parliamentary requirements.

It also called for an independent review into gender-affirming care.

During the August election campaign the ACL took out several half-page advertisements comparing candidates against their religious values.

It gave all Country Liberal Party candidates and two independents, including Ms Lambley, a tick for supporting a review into medical and surgical care of gender-diverse children.

However, for territory transgender man Elliot Hughes, who said he first knew he was transgender when he was four years old, the politicisation of his healthcare felt dehumanising.

"I think children need to be protected and supported," he said.

"This all goes against that for some kind of ideological argument about what it is to be a man or what it is to be a woman."

Mr Hughes said it further demonised the LGBTQIA+ community which over decades had been subjected to harmful politicisation by conservative governments and groups.

"It becomes this conflict, where we're always having to fight for the bare minimum, and that doesn't give us space to thrive, to excel, or to contribute to our full potential," he said.

Top End pride chairperson David Toro said for many in the community gender-affirming care was not optional, dismissible, or removable, but essential.

"Denying access risks deepening stigma and marginalisation, and we vehemently condemn this [petition]," he said.

Petition signatory and former independent MP Mark Turner, however, said he believed gender services needed to be better regulated.

"What concerns me is, we are progressing towards a laissez-faire, capitalistic health system...that could lead to absolutely tragic and preventable outcomes," he said.

"We've got bad actors who are just pumping [prescriptions] out for profit as much as they can... just to make a quick buck."

But existing legal precedents already safeguard a child's access to care, NT Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Jeswynn Yogaratnam said.

"The best interests of an individual child should be at the centre of decision-making, and a blanket suspension of treatment does not seem appropriate or necessary."

Transcend Australia executive officer Jeremy Wiggins said local and global evidence showed access to care benefitted young people's mental health.

"The thousands of families we support deserve to know that their healthcare will continue," he said."

They warn that such legislation also risks criminalising therapists who do not “unconditionally affirm” a child’s desire to transition.

The previous government had proposed banning conversion therapy but it was never implemented because of concerns that parents, teachers and therapists could be criminalised for questioning a child’s belief that they were born in the wrong body.

Labour has now resurrected these plans, with the Government earlier this month launching a new Office for Equality and Opportunity, stating that one of its “key immediate priorities” will be “delivering a full, trans-inclusive ban on conversion practices”.

The new cross-departmental body will be spearheaded by Annelise Dodds, the equalities minister, who has previously vowed to make it easier to change gender.

But the letter’s 140 signatories – which include Graham Stringer, senior Labour MP, and Dr David Bell, the former Tavistock Centre governor – warn that if such a ban goes ahead, a “slippery slope towards criminalising parents awaits us”.

They point out the “serious and harmful unintended consequences” of the plans, adding that medical interventions known as “gender-affirming transition” have been revealed as a “major medical scandal”.

Earlier this year, Dr Hilary Cass’s landmark report into the treatment of transgender children, advised that under-18s should not be rushed into treatment which they may later regret.

The report by Dr Cass, a paediatric consultant, called for the “unhurried” care of those under-25 who think they may be transgender, an end to the prescribing of powerful hormone drugs to under-18s and early help for primary school children who want to socially transition.

The letter, organised by James Esses, a campaigner, states that: “Whistleblowers in this field have been vindicated by recent events, such as the final report of the independent Cass Review, the NHS decision to halt the prescription of puberty blockers, the closure of the GIDS gender clinic at the Tavistock, and the revelations contained within the WPATH files, amongst other things.

“Many confused and vulnerable children who medically transitioned through puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones have suffered irreversible developmental issues, physiological damage (such as loss of bone density, infertility and sexual dysfunction) and significant social and relational harms. Those most at risk are children who do not conform to traditional sex stereotypes.”

Last month, a United Nations expert warned that a trans-inclusive bans on conversion therapy could backfire by putting girls and boys at risk of harm if governments rush their implementation.

Reem Alsalem, the UN special rapporteur on violence against women and girls, warned governments considering such a ban that there was a danger it could make it easier to “fast track” lesbian and autistic girls on the path of irreversible medical gender transition.

Calling anyone a "fascist" requires more explanation than that.

It's a serious issue whether teenagers have a right to choose their own medical care. But you should be careful when it comes to gender. Anyone who demands a right of parental veto for 16-18 year olds for the young person to have sex, is actually a fascist. Age of consent everywhere in the UK, is 16.

So what is " “unhurried” care of those under-25 who think they may be transgender,"

What is this? It violates the age of consent, and it even violates the age of adult responsibility (recognized practically everywhere as 18 years.)

It's not medical care - it is radical body alteration treatment, and minors cannot give meaningful consent to such things.

The guidelines were issued despite John Swinney, the First Minister, saying that he believed that male and female were the only two genders.

Asked on Monday about the list produced by his own administration, he said he still believed there were only two genders but that it would be “wrong” for him to interfere with decisions made by the chief statistician.

Despite all of the hissing and snarling and ridiculously ill-informed chest thumping on this thread, trans people just go on being people.

And they are far more protected in their right to exist than you lot are to decry them.

So whinge and whine away to each other, in your pathetic little echo-chamber on a dying message board existing only to serve as god's waiting room.

i think trans is probably on the wane.

we had whole wards full of anorexics, then that sort of waned

then we had all the teenage girls cutting

then that sort of waned

then we had all these people on dr phil with "multiple personality disorder"

that has all but disappeared

these things have a social contagion element and each becomes the latest "shiney new thing" with lots of attention

now that trans is past peak attention, it too will wane and eventually we will look back and wonder what the heck was going on
