The alleged 'confession' to Capt. Louise is only hearsay. The incident allegedly described by the two soldiers to the ABC was investigated by the Brereton Inquiry....no one has been charged.

Jesus - deja vu!  The Tractor Job was an incident in SVN which evolved from the VC using a tractor to move military equipment and stupidly using the same track every time....blown up by a trap set by SAS.

Could've recently rotated through close firing exercises.. a hangover from CTU.  No substitute for weapons training, especially in close quarters and without using sights.. takes practice, but that instinctive shot might save your life.  Of course, there are drawbacks, such as what appears to be an initial wrongful shooting in this case that apparently lead to a series of wrongful incidents.

There is a thing that occurs when trained to that pitch - I call it an absolute suspension of moral judgement - you simply learn AND ARE TRAINED to react without thinking about it..... and yes .. mistakes can be made, similar to the accidental shooting of an SAS trooper during a live fire exercise in the killing house in WA some years back, when SASR was dedicated to the CT role.

I thought I saw something of that in the execution of that unarmed man in the field.  It was pretty quick from start to finish, so not much thought went into it.

Welcome to the Dark Side.... now pass Das Boot...
