I'd love to see a WA Government try to introduce a toll road.

They'd end up in opposition for the next 30 years.

Barnett was going to build Roe 8 which was a toll road....His Government was smashed at the next election....I hear Troy Buzwell is in trouble again this time it is for assault on a woman....Just sayin???

I'm not saying you guys don't get some bad traffic, but I guarantee you have nothing like the soul destroying congestion we have in every part of Sydney.

People here grumble about a new toll road price but when they see it cuts a  20km/1 hour commute in half, the grumbling stops.

You can't compare Sydney and Perth.

I wouldn't know Gordon because I have never paid a toll in my life....Why does Sydney need so many toll roads anyway....Surely the richest State in Australia could stump up for the taxpayer???

Huh Huh Huh

How many KM of tunnels does Perth  have?

Add 3 million people to your city then Ill ask your provincial opinion.

You can't compare Sydney and Perth!!!

IFL road tolls.

Yesterday my first 3 bookings were at Chatswood, Artarmon then Milsons Pt. My next was at Darling Point but I had a bit of time to fill so I was going to go for a walk, get a coffee. A call came in from a client at Rozelle, I asked if we could do it right away, he said yup, I said cool, will confirm in 1 min. I called Darling Point client to ask if 30mins late would be OK, he said yup.

Thru the Cross City Tunnel, I was there in 15 mins and back in time to be only 15 mins late for the original booking time. $300+GST invoice the extra job and $10 in tolls.

Traveling by surface would have taken 45m+ each way.

MORE TOLL ROADS PLEASE!!!!!!

what lefties do not understand is

drumroll please!!!!!!

NOTHING IS FREE...

What rightards do not understand is that there's no need for toll roads when governments can borrow money at 1% to 2%. It's not the 1990s any more.

The problem with our grubberment is

That everyone in the grubberment is looking for ways to line their individual pockets with cash.

This is usually by way of bribes or bags of cash.

They sell off everything they can to private industry , losing revenue , but gaining a nice brown paper bag for their trouble.

Honestly.
What sort of prize MORON woukd sell the lottery to anyone.
It requires no resources
It costs practically nothing to run
You simply take peoples money and give a little back.

How much simpler could it be?
But these vegetables GAVE IT AWAY to private enterprise.
Really, how stupid are these carrots?

They now have only one simple revenue tool left.
Income tax
They have basically given up on company tax, too many companies pay bribes and no tax.
I wonder when they will sell off income tax to private enterprise?

Eventually someone will take yet another bribe
And we will all be paying 75% tax.

I don't mind toll roads at all - as long as I have the means to go wherever I want without having to use them if I so wish.     That is not the case with CityLink in Melbourne where the traffic system has been altered over the years to funnel just about all traffic onto it and pay the tolls.       You used to be able to use any one of a number of roads to get to wherever you want but Government, with the assistance of Councils has closed off streets, put traffic barriers in, restricted access and a host of other measures to force you onto the toll road or have to time your travel around restrictions!

By all means build them, but retain alternatives

And more power to you Gordon.  As you were travelling on business by the sounds of it, your tolls would be a legal deduction for tax purposes, as would the use of your car, fuel, rego and insurance. and even your coffee   It makes sense to get where you need to go in the minimum of time - less time travelling = more clients = more money for surfboards.

However, for those who don't have that privilege, tolls can add hundreds of dollars to your weekly bills.   There must be a viable alternative if you don't wish to pay tolls.

I don't want  to pay tolls, but so long as the Govt keeps the people pipe from India/China to Sydney fully open and the city gets busier and busier, we need the roads and the only way to build new roads in Sydney is to tunnel. Those tunnels cost zillions have to be paid for somehow.

Even for people who can't claim tax, they factor it in by being able to buy a house further out and literally $500k off the purchase price and who knows what when you add up the interest saved.

Stop pumping people into Sydney and we won't need toll roads.

Getting from my place to the start of the M1 can be a headkucf.

I can get to the PacHwy at Artarmon in about 20mins but then it can take 90 mins to get to the M1...20km in 90mins. I should be zipping past the central coast by that stage.

When the tunnel is finished I reckon I'll be on the M1 30mins after leaving home.

How many time do governments make toll roads, yet years after the road is more than paid for and the toll still remains?.   Sad

You've nailed the biggest rip off ever.

What's surprising is that some of the same people who wine loudly about every tax they pay or "welfare" "bludgers" have no problem paying tolls. Tolls are private taxes that do nothing but fatten the wallets of idle bludger shareholders.

I had to laugh today.

We have been suffering a road modification for some 6 or 7 years .......so far

A few short months ago, they opened a section, well, not really opened, just diverted traffic from one side to the other while they f#$K around with the old bit of road.

This afternoon, there was a huge pothole.
Right in the middle of this brand new stretch of road.
Honestly, the damn this was being screwed around with for 6 years.
And now, a couple of months after it was put in use, it cracks up and falls apart.

That must be some sort of new record
The road starts to fall apart before it's even opened.

Sack the company
Give some shovels to a bunch of dole bludgers
It couldn't be any worse, take any longer and it would cost a hell  of a lot less.

You have a choice.  Where a toll road has been built, there is always at least one free public road you can use if you don't want to pay the toll.  If you don't want to use the M4, use Parramatta Road or Victoria Road instead; if you don't want to use the M5, use Milperra Road, Canterbury Road and Bexley Road instead and so on.

How many "We Dont Want Your Miserable Toll Roads" threads do we need? It's all been said before, and by the same person, who always seems to want everything for nothing.

"Everything for nothing" is not the problem with toll roads. Most toll roads end up costing several times the construction price with them turning into cash cows lining private pockets. It's rent-seeking neoliberal madness.

If tolls were only imposed until the debt was repaid, there would not be a problem.
