Strange question for you
Dec 26th, 2019 at 8:04pm

My wife is worried about her father.
We know he is showing signs of losing his marbles...however most times he is ok and looks after himself living alone.
Just recently he has met a much younger woman...he is 87 she is 47.
She claims to be a lawyer
But I doubt a real lawyer will be living in state housing in a slum welfare suburb.
So there are some alarm bells ringing.
Claiming she is a lawyer and can look after his finances
Now this bloke handed over $5grand to one of his mates that had been conned by an African princess scam...so we are dealing with a gullible person

Its pretty obvious that there is going to be some kind of rip off going to happen

What can a family do when this sort of thing happens?

You need to have an assessment done and determine if he needs someone to have power of attorney... sounds like, on the surface, he is about to be conned again....

Not a good look...

This is NSW:-

.. and ring the Law society with her details and see if she is legit..... if not and if she is masquerading as a lawyer, she can be charged along with any co-conspirators...

Go in with both barrels.... loaded and cocked...

for a start check out her credentials   as a legal she will have to have a licence... then you or your wife gets Power of Attorney.  at 87 he needs protecting  not just from himself...if he has been conned in the past  that might be useful..its tricky thats for sure...but no way should an outsider be his power of attorney... which is what she would get to manage his finances... go see a legal right away...is my advice..

We have tried to get him to get the enduring power of attorney, but he has refused to cooperate.
He is a strange bastard...he never listens to family or even his family Dr about health things. .....but he talks to some young pretty female Dr and suddeny he is taking her advice....exactly what everyone else had been telling him.
He also refuses to move off his large rural property which is falling down around him (I can and can't understand that)
Makes looking after him very difficult

That has my alarms bells ringing too.

Better to do something officially and in writing to have it recorded now.

Contact whatever legal services there are locally.
Especially a high paid lawyer.
They would have met this issue before.

I agree with Grapp.   Have him assessed, talk to his Doctor and get it in writing that he is vulnerable.  Have an Enduring Power of Attorney drawn up.

Definitely contact the Law Society and have her checked out.   You can do that online as well.  Check with the Police and see if she is on record for similar things.

Maybe become a joint signee on his cheque account.

None of that is going to stop him from doing an online transfer in the interim though.

Oh and do it FAST!!

looking after the elderly can be tough, especially when they want to be stubborn. My 73 yr old mother in law is stuck looking after her almost blind 95 yr old mother in a house in rural Romania with no internal plumbing and limited electricity. In winter they have to trudge out in the snow to use the outhouse. The 95 yr old still insists that every year the 73 yr old plant her crops and keep her animals.

I reackon my mother in law will drop dead before her mother if she keeps it up for much longer. She's already been stuck there for about 10 years.  It would be much easier all around if they moved into my mother in laws unit in the city, but the grandmother in law won't have a bar of it.

Australia - the 'Aged' Nation.
Where what kids there are - are either junkies or gay.
Only the population of little white fluffy dogs has increased.
Where places like Tura Beach (full of retirees) are scammed of $1.3 million a year (That's just in one 'suburban' area). Wonder if the Government makes that much from them?

So many Australian men 'Poke the Pooch' (from the movie: the Right Stuff) too. Take Barnaby Joyce. He'll end up 'poor' - bombed out. Bob Hawke - he too bombed out after going for the other woman. in most Aussie Men's cases - they go for the Russian, Philipino, Thai, etc - 'Scamming' types. Even Aussie women are getting in on the act now. There's a few in there at Parliment who aggressively seek income from exploiting vulnerable men.

I've seen so many older men lose most of their lives to the other woman who eventually do the runner and take them to town in the process. I mean - what do you need women for at that age anyway?
Join me at the Brotherhood of the Whistling Wood where we make lunches far better than what the FreeMasons can put on. Put your feet up for a healthy retirement.

off topic, but since we're discussing the elderly

this place should be shut down and it's license revoked permanently
