This senate has been delaying bills sent to them since the current Republican senate leader took the position. They have passed around 80 bills over 300 less than is typical in the time and there is a backlog of work totaling over 300 bills. The senate has taken no action on the impeachment yet ?

As usual all biased BS which is untrue and unsupportable.

So they are saying that something that isn't running yet has impacted the progress of bills which have been deliberately blocked by the republicans for more than 12 months ?

In the American System, the Constitution reigns as the Law of the Land. Surely you should know, that Constitutionally, they can not force a defendant to testify. Congress hasn't the authorized power to overrule the US Constitution, the source of all their legislative power, not that the demon-rats seem to act that they understand or agree with that concept lately.

Maybe the Australian Parliament can do something like that, but not in America....not by will of Congress...........no, all defendants, big or small, have the basic right not to have to testify.
