Airport Workers To Rally Across Australia

Airport workers to rally across Australia

Canberra Times

Airport employees across Australia are set to rally for better pay and more guaranteed hours, but promise they're not aiming to disrupt flights.

The "noisy" protests are expected across Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Gold Coast airports from 11am on Wednesday, the Transport Workers' Union says.

They will demand better pay rates and more guaranteed hours, as well as an end to "deliberate understaffing" which the union says is a safety risk.

Up to 200 workers are expected to protest for about an hour across the five airports, with rallies in Perth, Coolangatta and Adelaide beginning at 11am, in Sydney at 12.15pm and Melbourne at 1pm.

The protests are not aimed at disrupting flights.

"We're not intending to cause disruption and our protesters won't be walking off the job, there won't be any strikes," union spokeswoman Judith Crosbie told AAP on Tuesday.

The protests are part of a bigger union campaign to push for better conditions in more than 200 pay deals spanning the road and air transport sectors, which are due to run out next June.

While pay agreements are not negotiated with the airports themselves, Ms Crosbie said they ultimately benefited from deals cutting wages and working conditions.

'What we're basically saying is, actually, the whole system is a bit messed up,' she said.

People have a right to belong to a union.  We hope they don't have to go on strike, but if they do then so be it.  That is a matter for these good workers to decide.   Smiley

Perth airport workers rally to protest pay, conditions
August 21st, 2019,  Southern Gazette News

SECURITY incidents at Perth Airport have been revealed as staff across the country rally for better pay and conditions.

The Transport Workers’ Union said in once instance passengers at Perth Airport were allowed airside to collect their baggage after a baggage handler was left alone to unload an entire aircraft.

It also claimed staff had been forced back to work while still injured and even forced to sleep at airports between grueling split shifts.   Sad

Perth’s rally coincided with protests at airports in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and the Gold Coast, all aimed at securing better pay rates and more guaranteed hours.

Up to 200 employees were expected to rally across the five cities, but the union has stressed it’s not about disrupting flights.

“We’re not intending to cause disruption and our protesters won’t be walking off the job, there won’t be any strikes,” union spokeswoman Judith Crosbie told AAP.

The protests are part of a bigger union campaign for better conditions in more than 200 pay deals in the road and air transport sectors, which are due to run out next June.

“Behind the shiny facades of our airports lies an appalling reality for airport workers,” TWU National Secretary Michael Kaine said.   Sad

“They are kept constantly desperate for more hours and struggle to support their families on low rates.

“Thousands of workers at Swissport/Aerocare have been ripped off their wages for seven years and have even been forced to sleep at airports between grueling split shifts.

“Airports are profiting from this because they are allowing companies to win contracts on the basis of the lowest possible cost.   Sad

“They are failing to take into account efficiency, safety and fair working conditions. Airport workers are today saying enough is enough.”

Easy fix.

Most of the airport jobs in moving people and luggage around the airport, in ticketing, in luggage check in, in food prep and retail are totally open to AI and robotics replacing them.

These workers should not be exploited, they should simply be seen as antiquated and irrelevant  and replaced.

Probably about 50 % of the population are about to find out that business just doesn't need them.
And if they are noisy disruptive and more expensive, business certainly doesn't need them

These workers will need to become more fluid, creative, master their emotions and find new work.
And they will need to do ongoing learning and reinvent themselves much more often

The idea of a "secure job" is finished.
Those who get upset and complain about this have no place in the new economy
