Not sure why anyone cares or what it is relevant to.

That sounds typical of your "thinking" processes. Grin Grin Grin Grin

The Liberals need to pay for their sabotage of the economy thinking it would ruin Labor now that they've won, without backing down on the Military spending they locked in, plus they now need to find the same amount they sunk into that that they ripped out of Education and Hospitals.  They have to do it without breaking the budget, without blowing out the deficit further and without raising taxes.

$160 billion isn't a small amount.

What's the best way to do it?

Get the ATO to recommend a scope increase to the GST, test the waters, see how the people respond.  If they don't care, they'll adopt it, early, so people forget before the next election, if the people react badly to it, they'll swoop in, pretend it was never their idea and refuse it, claiming they're standing up for the people.

It's standard politics.  It's been done over and over.  This is nothing new...

Australian politics, the minutia of it, is still as predictable as it's ever been.  Those who support the Liberals won't bother to scratch the surface and accept whatever narrative they spew, everyone else will be branded a whinger because Labor lost.

Nobody cares about what is real anymore, just the way the political class want it.

If we fight amongst ourselves the Liberals will be able to continue to make false claims like they're better economic managers etc etc.

All governments have a poisoned chalice.
The socialist ideas haven't worked - they have run out of money.
What can they do?
They have already borrowed too much.
https://www.australiandebtclock.com.au/

State Govts. & local council debt $168 billion.
National Govt. debt $702 billion.
Total Australian debt $7.2 trillion

Now they will just raid everyone's money wherever they can find it.
New taxes will be dreamt up.
They will import millions more immigrants which only dilutes the wealth
but gives them a larger GDP to work with.
Somehow they have to keep kicking the can down the road
to stop a great depression.

The Libs deliberately tanked the economy to later attack Labor about it.

There is no excuse for such malice.

The only good thing about their win is now they have to deal with that.

However there can be some grey areas - for instance a pre-packaged salad is understood to be a pre-prepared meal but the industry argues it is fresh food....

weirs  I read that as meaning that item will COST LESS...

but you always look on the negative side..

I am amazed gst hasnt been increased in all these years.....when the hell will you stop moaning about it?

And before they even have the reins of government. Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

"The Australian Tax Office will suggest to Prime Minister Scott Morrison that GST needs to be applied to a broader range of foods. "

So at this stage they haven't even suggested it. Wink

"We are developing advice and guidance on the following GST issues."

Dated April 8 when the Coalition were tipped to lose. I guess that advice was meant for Bill. Wink

This is true, but the notion of testing the waters consequence-free is nothing new in politics, especially with the Libs when they have the support of the media.

Just where to get a left wing rag these days? The garudian? nah too right wing.

Then UComms polling outfit to help spread the good word. Controlled by the ACTU and CMFEU? Nah also too right wing?

The ABC trying desperately to be seen as neutral?  nah.
