World's Oldest Rainforest Is Being Cooked to Death
May 1st, 2019 at 10:05pm

There are many portents of doom concerning animal species extinction. This is the first sign of tree species suffering from the rising temperatures.

The next thing we will see is livestock killed by heat waves.

It appears too late to stop AGW temperature rise.

World's Oldest Rainforest Is Being Cooked to Death by Climate Change, Authorities Warn

Maddie Stone
Australia can’t seem to catch a break. The Great Barrier reef is still limping along after being ravaged by heat waves two to three years ago, while the people of Australia just sweated through their hottest summer on record. Now, authorities are warning that the endless heat has placed a world-class rainforest in grave danger.

A statement issued Monday by the management authority for the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area warns that site, which spans 450 kilometers (280 miles) along Australia’s northeast coast, is experiencing “accelerating decline” as a result of human-caused climate change, and that several species found nowhere else on Earth are on the verge of disappearing forever.

“The Board of the Wet Tropics Management Authority (the Board) has now become aware that, following the hottest summer ever recorded, some of the key species for which the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area was listed are at imminent risk of extinction,” the statement reads.

The Queensland world heritage area is a patchwork of tropical rainforests, steep gorges, ocean vistas and waterfalls known for its “superlative scenic features” and “magnificent sweeping landscapes” according to UNESCO. It’s considered the world’s oldest rainforest; a relic of the Gondwana forest that spanned parts of Australia and Antarctica some 50 million years ago, it contains what UNESCO describes as one of the “most complete and diverse” records of the evolution of land plants. It’s a haven for marsupials, birds, and hundreds of other rare species found nowhere else.

Now, much of this irreplaceable diversity faces an existential threat in the form of rising temperatures. Scientists have known this for years: A 2016 report called climate change “the most significant future threat to the region” noting it was driving cool-adapted mountain species out of the lower part of their range and causing populations to decline. A 2017 report by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature rated the world heritage site an area of “significant concern,” calling out climate change as well as invasive species as two major threats.

The new statement by the site’s management board ratchets up the alarm even higher, describing extreme heat that has afflicted the region of late as its “coral bleaching event equivalent,” an allusion to the heat wave that recently cooked and killed half of the corals in the Great Barrier Reef. The board points out that while one imperiled species, the white lemuroid ringtail possum, can’t last “even a day” at temperatures above 29 degrees Celsius (84 degrees Fahrenheit), the highest mountain peak in the region experienced “unprecedented” 39 degree Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit) heat spikes this past summer. Other similarly threatened species include the green ringtail possum and the tooth-billed bowerbird, both found nowhere else. The latest evidence suggests extinctions for species like these may come “even sooner” than previously expected, according to the board.

“This is occurring now, not in the future, and requires an immediate response,” the board wrote in the statement.

“Ultimately we are witnessing the destruction by climate change of one of the most ecologically important and beautiful places in the world.”
As far as that response goes, the management board outlines a 10-point plan of interventions, including restoring wildlife corridors, expanding monitoring effects, and “[i]mmediate and aggressive control” of pests like feral pigs. The plan also calls for strengthening partnerships with the rainforest’s Aboriginal peoples, and finalizing the Wet Tropics Climate Adaptation Plan “as a matter of urgency.” A draft of that plan is slated to be released in June.

Finally, the statement calls for “urgent action on reducing global emissions.” A companion news release highlights the global nature of the crisis facing tropical forests. Historically, the impacts of climate change have been understudied in the tropics, but recent evidence suggests those impacts are likely to be significant. With stable temperatures year-round, rainforest species are often adapted to a narrow temperature range, and emerging evidence suggests they don’t always handle change well.

“It can be assumed that tropical forests and ecosystems around the world are similarly impacted or worse,” the news release reads.

In response to the board’s dire warning, the Australian Conservation Foundation issued its own call to action on Tuesday that did not mince words (and, frankly, threw a little shade).

“This is a clear and urgent call for action from the normally dour public servants and scientists who look after one of Australia’s most precious places,” Australian Conservation Foundation CEO, Kelly O’Shanassy said in the statement.

“Ultimately we are witnessing the destruction by climate change of one of the most ecologically important and beautiful places in the world that we as Australians have promised to look after on behalf of all humankind.”

Let's see.

The coral is in water. Heat waves don't affect them.

Australia's "hottest summer on record" is solely due to the ACORN 2 temperature "data" adjustment.

And that's about it.

Something to note - There is no reference to an actual study. Or a peer-reviewed paper.  Roll Eyes

Although there seems to have been a model based study done - but not actually posted.

"The lemuroid ringtail possum is at imminent risk of extinction from known strongholds by 2022, according to research by Professor Steve Williams from the Centre for Tropical Environment and Sustainability Science at James Cook University."

Oh and JCU, the University that recently lost a court case over a scientist disagreeing with his colleagues and sacking them? Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Actually it is the statement issued.

"The lemuroid ringtail possum, a species for which the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is renowned, has been steadily declining now for more than a decade. Prof Williams’ recent monitoring has identified that the declines in possum and bird species have continued at a rate similar to the predictions made more than a decade ago and are now reaching alarming levels. If the trends continue, populations at sites that previously had the highest density of lemuroid ringtail possums in the region could become locally extinct as early as 2022. This species is currently not even classified as endangered."

Maybe the Rainforest needs some expert Aboriginal Fire Farming done to it?

So Lee is there anything you can find that discredits Professor Steve Williams , or are you just discounting what he says because the University he works at just lost a case about another Professor, ohh and that case only said that the university was wrong in firing the guy, not that the other professor was right in anything he said.
If they have been monitoring declines in animals in the forest for the last 10 years and the numbers dropped have been as forecast,  why do you have a problem with them assuming that the trend will stay like that ?
Or did u just see the guy was from Cook University and decide you didn't like it . Wink

Yes. That is why the University charged him with not being "collegial". That is not being supportive. Now why did the Uni feel the need to try to shut him up?

You seem to be confused -

The current rate is similar to predictions made more than a decade ago.

There is nothing to say that in the intervening period they continued that decline or increased then declined.

Without knowing the full methodology any assumptions are best left alone.

Did you notice that little word IF?

"
IF
the trends continue"

And the assertion at the top says it is a stone cold certainty. No room for doubt.

can you show me in that article where these prof tell us what we can do to stop this... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

is the world/planet changing  I my god yes it is... as it has done so for millions of years....

even these prof/scientist cant deny that...

so how does a little human being stop what is happening?????..

how do we turn off this heat?....or as we see in some place snow ice floods tornadoes.and earthquakes....

dont mention volcano eruptions. which as far as i know havent been blamed on climate change.. Sad tell me if i am wrong..

I just want to know    what little old us. in little OZ.. with one of the worlds smallest populations.....

can possibly do to change a bloody thing?

JUST TELL ME!

btw how many of these scientist travel by bicycle?..

Seeing as he hasn't released his "research" we can't tell. However the assumed plight of the possum is in fact not the World's Oldest Rainforest, as stipulated at the headline, but an animal inhabitant.

Though there seems to be some doubt as to it being the oldest rainforest, given the error bars.

http://www.oldest.org/geography/forests/

Now this forest, above, is listed as 450 km. The Daintree, possibly the oldest, is listed as 460 sq miles. It is possibly the same forest, but you would think a scientist would be able to actually name the forest researched.

BTW- "Normally found at elevations over 600 metres, these cool adapted species have progressively moved to higher elevations, leaving alarming population declines at the lower elevation areas of their distribution"

https://www.wettropics.gov.au/site/user-assets/docs/2019.04.29%20WTMA%20board%20...

So they have moved uphill for some reason, maybe climate maybe another reason, and there are worries some are being left behind?

When climate changes, species adapt. Or die. And the earth has a long history of climate changing.
