Rubbish.  There are mandatory provisions that a 'life sentence' must be imposed.  Judge has done his job.  "Life."

"An adult who is found guilty of murder must be sentenced to life imprisonment unless:

A life sentence would clearly be unjust in the circumstances; and
The person is unlikely to be a threat to the safety of the community when released (in which case the person must be imprisoned for 20 years)."

https://www.gotocourt.com.au/criminal-law/wa/murder-homicide-offences/

Criminal law WA.

See that "unless"; that is the out. And that makes it a non-mandatory sentence.

In Queensland there is no "life sentence" for murder.

"Murder—also called homicide—is the wilful killing of a person with intent to kill or cause grievous bodily harm. However, it does not include dangerous driving causing death—the unlawful killing of a person as a result of dangerous or negligent driving without intent to kill. This is a different offence and has a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison.

If a person has a previous murder conviction or has been found guilty of multiple murders the minimum sentence is 30 years in prison.

If a person knowingly murders a police officer the minimum sentence is 30 25 years in prison."

Then, it is over to parole boards to determine if there should be an early release.

There is no parole if it's not said in the sentencing eg 25 years to life.

Roger Roberson got life.

in reality they'll let him out on parole after 20 or 25 years , unless he's serving other sentences for corruption, extortion etc

Milat is serving 7 life sentences. If he lives to 180 they might let him out  Cheesy Cheesy

Also Victoria, NSW, Tasmania and ACT have life imprisonment as a maximum.

But I started out in WA. Wink

But you didn't show I was wrong in Queensland either.

No one state was mentioned as to whether there was "life".

You can slip, you can slide, do your usual tapdance, and you get nowhere.  I told you what the situation was in Qld.

When I made my statement I thought it was Australia wise but it's definitely new where life is life. Therefore there is a true life sentence in Australia though it may be just in nsw.

PS sorry about all the wrong words it's this stupid phone

Don't worry about the words.

NSW has, according to the paper from a couple of posts ago, a maximum of life.
