What is nothing?

The word seems to have no meaning?

Science does not identify it, yet people use the word freely.

Scientifically defining nothing is next to impossible because even if an area of space void of all particles, fields and laws of nature could be found, it someone still could define it as something.

The only way to define nothing is when the lack of something is linked to the thing/s you'd like to be there.

What's in cookie jar? Nothing. Really, no air, crumbs, sub-atomic particles?
Don't be silly, there are no cookies in the cookie jar   Smiley

The inside the cookie jar by definition is defined by the presence of the jar inner walls.

Luckily we all inhabit a realm where we use the word 'nothing' colloquially and not literally.

Nothing is the absence of something.

Therefore there is probably no such thing as nothing.

One analogy, i think could apply, is comparing 'nothing' with the absence of light.

Man's scientific instruments can quantify light [e.g. its intensity].

But the darkness, is just, a darkness [a 'nothing'].

bojack,

We are exploring our reality.

But many of us don't know as much about our reality,      as educated people like yourself do.         Tongue

So, do tell us;     What is the answer to Life, The universe, and Everything ?

[and don't try that    42     trick answer!!! ]

The question is the problem.

Light refers the the thin spectrum humans see. Pitch Black to us still has low infrared radiation, so darkness is something, ie light outside the visible.

The universe glows infrared  so there is no true darkness.
