If you are wondering why—I bought a tiny Bovril jar (empty) in an antique shop. Interesting shape.

Will copy this post I made in the Dubyne MRB just in case:

To put all this in perspective here is a tweet from Feb:

Quote:
Lars Kaleschke @seaice_de

There is open water north of #Greenland where the thickest sea ice of the #Arctic used to be. It is not refreezing quickly because air temperatures are above zero confirmed by @dmidk's weather station #KapMorrisJesup. Wacky weather continues with scary strength and persistence.

6:06 PM - Feb 25, 2018

1,076
1,204 people are talking about this

And I guess the above is what Dubyne was meaning with his “Arctic temperatures are recovering. Of course, he earlier lied to his faithful followers including Booby, that the Arctic had not warmed. He made quite the joke of it, after the warming, showing Arctic temperatures (real or not O don’t know or care) at normal levels.

Then he obviously forgot that lie and said “Arctic temperatures are recovering.”

With warm air flowing into the Arctic again the 2018 sea ice extent is once again below the extent as at 2017:

interactive chart, compare 2018 to 2017, 2016. . .1955. . .

That there is a new pattern of Arctic melting and temperatures—warm winters with summers cooler.

A big melt can be expected this year with this warm air and warm rain etc invading the Arctic just before the summer months.

Putting all this in perspective:

Quote:
“The National Snow and Ice Data Center just released its updated sea ice extent charts which show that just 2% of ice left in the Arctic is older than 5 years.

The difference with 1984 is stark. This means that most of the Arctic freeze now is weather dependent. The energy it takes to melt a block of ice raises the same volume of water by 80 degrees. We’re about to turn off the northern hemisphere’s air conditioning.”

Although Neven’s latest post shows PIOMAS as better than at this time last year, it is still the second lowest ice volume for this time of year. I suspect that favourable melt conditions this summer would quickly dispose of the extra 1605 cu/km of ice over last year. Then we are in “dodge a bullet” mode for the rest of the summer. This is a game that we cannot keep winning for long.

Also, looking at today’s ENSO report, it looks quite likely that the La Nina will officially be over by June. El Nino is now at about 50 percent probability this coming northern winter. Also of note is the much weaker back-to-back La Ninas of 2016-2018 compared to those of 2010-2012.

Thus the Arctic may see little respite in the next couple of years before the heat spike heads north from the next El Nino event.

Most of the Arctic is now a slush sea.

The heat to melt a volume of ice would heat the resulting 0.0°C water to 80°C. Airconditioner is on the blink.

from a comment on the Guardian

Quote:
The temperature measurements at Cape Morris Jesup, the northernmost point of mainland Greenland, tells that story. In the month of February, since 1981, it has been rare for hourly air temperatures to spike above freezing. In 1997 it happened once. In 2011 it happened five times, and in 2017 it happened seven times. This year, it happened 59 times.

Bovril is a beef extract.

Marmite and Vegemite are spoiled (autolysis) brewers yeast.

This is about coal, but the implications for growth in renewable energy are fairly obvious:

Quote:
Allianz stops insuring coal-fired power plants and coal mines

Munich, Germany-based Allianz Group announced on Friday that it would refuse insurance coverage of coal-fired power plants and coal mines effective immediately, and would aim to get rid of all coal risks in its business by 2040.

In announcing its “climate protection package” last week, Allianz, ranked as one of the top three insurers on the Forbes Global 2000 list of the world’s most powerful companies, said its new policy was the first step towards the firm’s complete withdrawal from the coal business by 2040, reports Deutsche Welle.
Additionally, Allianz will also gradually stop investing in companies that fail to reduce their carbon emissions in line with the 2-degree trajectory agreed under the Paris Climate Agreement, and will “immediately” stop investing in energy companies that “put the 2-degree target at risk” by extensively building coal-fired power plants, according to Green Biz.

http://www.digitaljournal.com/news/world/allianz-stops-insuring-coal-fired-power...

Insurance companies are in the forefront of acting to protect themselves from AGW. They have to be, more extreme weather, more floods (from heavy rain or sea level rise) loss of crops etc.

What you talkin about willis

Increasingly, Arctic ice is first year ice. Gets broken up by storms and their waves etc.

It takes a lot of energy to melt 1cc of ice into 0°C water. That same amount of energy will heat that 1cc of 0°C water to 80°C.

That means the Arctic Ocean is warming faster and faster as summer ice disappears. That heat creates wild weather in mid latitudes. It is also slowing the AMOC and that means the Atlantic where the Gulf Stream part of the AMOC flows is like 9°C warmer than usual, feeding storms like the three Northeasters that hit New England earlier this year with energy and moisture. Sea levels off the Gulf and east coasts of the US are rising more rapidly.
