We know that governments are in the business of selling off public assets. Should a future government be willing to buy back public assets? Or confiscate them?

Confiscation is not an option because it would be unconstitutional. Acquisition of private property by the Federal government can only be done on just terms.

Yeas, 'It's the vibe.'

Cool

The States can do it though. There is no constitutional restriction on the States from confiscating assets.

Ah....but there is Legislation.

Which can be repealed at any time.

Yes, but there is still a common law entitlement under injurious affection.  Not perfect or without many vagueries, but it is there.

But if private industry does such a bad job that every time we get a 1 day heatwave or 100km/hr wind
the electricity fails -
then surely the Govt. has good grounds to take the utility back?

Sure.....if they have breached the terms of sale, or any licence conditions.

Yes buy them back for the same price they paid minus depreciation.

No - it should resume them and only pay what is outstanding to clear the real debt level of the current 'owners', not some mythical punitive payment that was signed into the 'contracts'..... those who got the show have made their money... no need to pay them out extra.

Easy to do - that contract was signed by a different government - not this one.... governments are quick as lightning to change legislation to gain some advantage when it suits them.... they can do that as easily....

Puh-lease!  They've been writing them down as a tax deduction for a loss.... write-down in value is an asset.... write-down eventually ends at (almost) zero - the only thing that will alter that is re-capitalisation of assets etc...

With what ?

Most governments are deeply in debt, QLD alone is $80+ bil in the hole thanks to Disaster Anna 1 and the Puddle Duck doesn't look like she has a clue what she is doing.

Not a lot of government have 10s of billions of pesos lying around to buy back sold assets, so even if they wanted to, it won't happen due to poor fiscal management and general incompetence.

I would chuck an extra zero or two ..... Telstra would cost 50-100 billion alone at least, the Comm bank would be a very big nose bleeding number.

As both major parties sell of assets its a dumb thread.

The real question should who is best set up to deliver particular services. A leftwing nut job thinks its always the government !

In reality there is a mixture.

In Sydney we have Government buses with certain areas that run subsidised private buses.

Same with health services which would collapse without the private sector !

We should sell off the ABC and SBS thats a billion dollars plus a year albatross around taxpayers necks.

If the lefties like the ABC and SBS they can buy shares in it and put their money where their mouths are.

The governments job is running the country no government should be in the media business.

We need independent and even-handed media outlets to keep the mainstream media honest.... I find the ABC does that job fairly and evenly, even though I disagree with their feminist bent....

To be discussed at the appropriate time with full figures on the table...

What 'appreciation' do you perceive when every year's tax return shows a write-down?
