Polar bears are intelligent animals. Some are moving to land and rivers and eating fish, acting more like grizzly bears.

"But in fact, the polar bear’s closest ancestor is a land carnivore we associate more strongly with our forests. Over the years, scientists have uncovered an evolutionary path suggesting that polar bears are a relatively new species, and actually a subspecies, of Ursus arctos, more widely known as the brown bear. Scientific evidence has found that the brown bear, a species that also includes grizzly bears, was a “precursor” to polar bears, which then went on to develop specializations for inhabiting the harsh Arctic."

Maybe because grizzlies are the forebears of polar bears. Wink

Something like that—there has been interbreeding as polar bears react to the current conditions in the Arctic.

It's too late. AGW has momentum which won't stop for decades.

The seas are being trashed beyond redemption.

The biggest barrier to fixing the problem is that it won't affect most people too much in their own lifetime. However, it trashes the planet for future generations.

The temperature rise chart below is dramatic.

I am more optimistic.

Libs only want to please donors.

Man in the street—like Frank here—will take an interest even if only when AGW bites him on the bum. The man of the land already knows it is here.

Despite all that, solar and wind are edging out coal on price.

Once even the man on the street sees AGW will stuff up his life science and technology will be able to save the day, finally closing coal and gas and scrubbing CO2, NH4 and N2O from the atmosphere. The albedo of oceans can be changed.

It will require a mobilisation like for a major war but it can be done.

Those poo pooing AGW as a threat now will be the loudest in demanding something be done, right Lees?  Wink

You mean based on your assertion of AGW now being the NULL hypothesis? Based on Climate Models?

Something to Cry Over -

"Cradling her newborn baby girl, heatwave expert Sarah Perkins Kirkpatrick admits to feeling torn between the joy of motherhood and anxiety over her first-born child's future.

"I always wanted a big family and I'm thrilled. But my happiness is altered by what I know is coming with climate change," she said.

"I don't like to scare people but the future's not looking very good.

"Having a baby makes it personal. Will this child suffer heatstroke just walking to school?"

Dr Perkins Kirkpatrick is one of several climate scientists who Lateline spoke to, seeking a range of opinions from experts at some of the top climate change research units within major universities in Australia. "

""I wouldn't want to be living in Brisbane, north of Brisbane, over the coming decades because the humidity will be atrocious and when it's hot and humid it's actually a lot harder to stay cool because your body can't get rid of that heat through evaporation," she said.

"There's nowhere for the moisture to go." "

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-06-27/climate-scientists-speak-of-their-worst-fe...

IF she was so scared why did she have a baby in the first place?

AGW theory says it is the temperate region that will be impacted most, not the sub-tropics. Of course it it were true - Singapore, currently outdoing Australian children in education etc is truly stuffed.

Nowhere for the humidity to go? Not precipitate out?

OK, you are too fricking stupid for words.

The null hypothesis is global climate is stable.

You are on ignore.

When was the global climate stable?

LIA, MediaevalWP, RomanWP, Minoan WP, Last Ice Age, 1920 - 1940, global cooling scare? Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Global climate changes. Change is not stability.

For those with a real interest here is an animation of temperatures in the years 1850–

...

It is clear that temperatures are increasing: any statistical test of the null hypothesis that temperatures are stable in this period will end with the null hypothesis being falsified. Clearly temperatures are increasing.

Why are they increasing? Not due to the sun being more active, it varies but has not steadily increased 1850–.

A cessation of volcanic activity may have caused a mid 1900s spike in temperatures: volcanoes cool the earth because they spew aerosols into the upper atmosphere where they reflect sunlight back into space, cooling the earth. Have been some, just cause a little bit of noise in the temperature graph 1980– so not an explanation for the increase 1850 to present.

We know GHGs in the atmopsphere are increasing, that we are putting them there by mass burning of fossil fuels. Could they be the cause of the increasing global temperatures? Volcanoes do add CO2 to the atmosphere but it is negligible compared to our contribution.

Spectrometry, both terrestrial, i.e. from the ground looking up and from satellites looking down shows that there are gaps corresponding to the GHGs at the black body temperature corresponding to our world. That is how GHGs warm the world.

It is nothing as crude as mere correlation: there is a known, measured mechanism whereby GHGs absorb infrared radiation, preventing it from escaping to space and so warming the earth.

The Arctic warms by another mechanism: as the sea ice extent shrinks in the NH summer sunlight hits dark ocean and is absorbed, warming the ocean. This is called “warming due albedo change” and is why the Arctic is warming at twice the rate of the rest of our planet. Any so–called “pause” in AGW is based on temperature series that ignore the poles.

There are other minor ways the globe warms but these are third order effects (e.g. land clearing etc) but these are pretty minor and just slightly accelerate AGW.

What are the GHGs? These are the “non–condensing” gases like carbon dioxide and the more minor, if much more potent, gases like methane and nitrous oxide: more about these later.

There is another GHG: water vapor. Unlike CO2 water vapor does condense and fall as rain, hail or snow. We call it a reinforcer. As the non–condensing GHGs increase in concentration more water vapor joins them. The water vapor leaves a small window for infrared to escape to space and the GHGs act to further close the window, trapping more and more heat.

Now, methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide are minot GHGs. However, as the Arctic tundra thaws larger and larger amounts of these two GHGs can escape the tundra and end up in the atmosphere—especially nitrous oxide—and increase the rate AGW quite a bit.

So, that is the story. AGW is happening and is likely to increase rapidly as NO2 increases in concentration in the atmosphere.

Sea levels are rising due to AGW in two ways: as the oceans warm they increase in volume. Land based ice from Greenland which is shedding 200,000,000 tons of ice each year due to melting on the surface and where glaciers calve: this has picked up speed as the ice shelves that used to surround Greenland have melted away so warmer ocean currents now lap directly onto the glaciers at sea level. Will not be long before the balance between the East Antarctic plateau (gaining mass) and the West Antarctic ice sheet (losing ice) tips into net ice loss from Antarctica as well.

All of this is documented in the threads here—I will try to put up a list of links. But there is evidence for it.

Or the real scary one of temperature changes through the ages -

Not long in the geologic sense.

And will take about 3,000 years to melt.

And also by the greening of the planet.

It doesn't show temperatures, it doesn't show the IR that is trapped incoming.

For so few days and the angle at which the sun hits is acute, meaning more is reflected than warms.

And of course CO2 is not and cannot be direction dependant, So the IR is also trapped incoming, which reduces that which reaches the surface as well as that that is available for reflection.

Recovery from the Little Ice Age.

But JM doesn't want to include these. Wink

No, doofus, read it again.

the count was 20,000–31,000. Range 11000.

Not in the article I read recently...

Factoid... according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the polar bear population stands between 20 and 31,000, the highest it has been for the past 50 years.

Monk, I wasn't referring to this...  I'm sure if you Google Polar bear population the article will pop up sometime.  Sorry, but I cant be bothered looking again.  bad enough I had to go back and fetch this one again for you.  Might be nicer if you quoted or linked to it eh.

Anyhoo the article I recently read said 31,000...  up from the 5000 in the early 2000s.  So as you can see the PB population is going up.  Hooray. Roll Eyes

Quoting a doofus quoting something he misunderstood:

So previously the range was below 20K to below 31K.

Learn to read, then try to understand, only then post.

Oh dear see, now that's what happens when you barge in like a wanker and don't wait for people to post replies to your idiocy.
I suggest you take a valium and reread what I wrote doofus...  or get an adult to explain it to you.
