Ice watch

For keeping track of Arctic and Greenland ice mass gains and losses.

Arctic:
...

April sea ice extent 1979–17:
...

That seems to tell a definite story of rapid AGW in the Arctic. All this with a sun relatively quiescent.

Greenland:

...

...

Have a look at these figures every week or so.

May 8th. The west coast is again the coast where most melting is taking place tho the east coast was where melting started this year.

Your map seems to show most of the melt, for Greenland, outside the Arctic Circle. Wink

The Greenland ice melt has really accelerated in the last couple of days—see the figures in the OP. Seems to be well above average so far but early days yet.

Some articles I have read have talked about a collapse in parts of the ice sheet and it looks like that is happening. Will post some of these later today.

Still above 1981 - 2010 baseline.

DMI notes Greenland’s ice sheet “snows more than it melts,” but adds that “calving of icebergs also adds to the total mass budget of the ice sheet.”

“Satellite observations over the last decade show that the ice sheet is not in balance,” according to DMI. “The calving loss is greater than the gain from surface mass balance, and Greenland is losing mass at about 200 Gt/yr.”

Very good. Now how much ice is there in Greenland? How long would it take to melt completely at 200G'ton/ year?

" If the entire 2,850,000 cubic kilometres (684,000 cu mi) of ice were to melt"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenland_ice_sheet

What of the "old" people?

"The frozen ground around Ilulissat Ice Fjord in western Greenland is a treasure trove for archaeologists.

The permafrost in this area, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, acts like a giant freezer, preserving the remains of the three major cultures of Greenland’s past in deposits known as kitchen middens -- essentially ancient dunghills created by the early cultures on Greenland.

These are the Saqqaq, Dorset and Thule peoples, who at various times in the last 3500 years all lived in the old settlement of Qajaa, in south Greenland."

http://sciencenordic.com/climate-change-destroying-greenland%E2%80%99s-earliest-...

Back when Greenland was truly a "green land".

But you believe the climate shouldn't change. That it should be the same year after year or that Greenland is a special case that should only increase ice mass. Wink

The Arctic

Quote:
Arctic Sea Ice Keeps Scraping the Bottom of the Barrel

Brian Kahn By Brian Kahn

Published: May 3rd, 2017
The astounding transformation of the Arctic before our very eyes continues. Yet another month has passed with record low sea ice.

This April merely tied April 2016 for the lowest extent on record, but it’s hardly reason to celebrate. The Arctic was missing 394,000 square miles of ice, with each day setting a record low or within 36,000 square miles of setting one.

...

Continuing:
Quote:
Temperatures averaged up to 14°F above normal in part of the Arctic last month, fueling the melt season. Scientists at the National Snow and Ice Data Center said the rate of ice loss was about average. . . .

One of the biggest issues for sea ice is its increasingly youthful appearance. Young ice is more susceptible to the vagaries of weather, whether it be warm air or water or storms that knock it around and break it up.

Ice older than five years in age now only comprises 5 percent of the Arctic’s ice pack. It accounted for 30 percent of all Arctic sea ice in 1984, but relentless warmth driven by rising carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has slowly squeezed it out of existence.

...

And the weakening of the Jet Stream is allowing storms from the North Atlantic to reach the Arctic raising temperatures, blowing sea ice around etc—one whole mass of ice was lost forever when it was blown out into the Pacific and this is likely to happen again:

Quote:
Looking at where the older and middle-aged ice is paints a grim picture for the Arctic. A trail of third-year ice sits huddled between Greenland and the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard. That location means it will likely ride ocean currents out of the Arctic, leaving the region with even less of an increasingly precious resource.

Following the usual pattern, melt has almost stopped for a couple of days.

Here's a nice dummie-spit from someone at the CSIRO who's in a sulk that the Liberal government has wound down on funding grants to all the little piglets who've been suckling off the taxpayers' tits with the 'Climate Change' fraud.

Stop panicking and eat more tofu and mung beans, you bohemian plonker.

I'm sure Far Leftwing do-gooders like Bill Gates, Richard Branson, and Bob Geldof will open their wallets to keep this Gravy Train chugging along with all its little passenger piggies hogging from the Bullshit Trough we know-and-love by the name of 'Climate Change'.

Don't you just love the catch-all two-way-bet of
'Climate Change'
... a version of
'Heads I win - tails you lose' - ?
