There is more to the story than you let on. Under the height of Communism and the Soviet Union they instituted the doctrine of state atheism with a government sponsored program of forced conversion to atheism.
The communist regime targeted religions based on State interests, and while most organised religions were never outlawed, religious property was confiscated, believers were harassed, and religion was ridiculed while atheism was propagated in schools.
Although personal expressions of religious faith were not explicitly banned, a strong sense of social stigma was imposed on them by the official structures and mass media and it was generally considered unacceptable for members of certain professions to be openly religious.
What I said was,

The idea that Putin, a Communist Leader, is taking Russia back to Christianity when one of the tennants of Communism has been the oppression of religion and that this somehow makes him a great man for Trump to follow and emulate is a farce.
His reintroduction of Christianity is nothing but another form on control on his people, a distraction and a way to legitimise the oppression of homosexual and other fellow countrymen that don't support his strongman image.
Holding him up as an example for Trump to emulate is madness.
And you know it, hence your diversion to attacking posters and bringing up Clinton, again.
This is an instance where Putin cannot be defended and trying to soften Trump's links to him by softening Putin's image won't fly.
With all of that said it might sound like I'm hurting my own argument showing Russia going towards atheism during a time where they were considered "evil" and the "enemy", but don't confuse and conflate Communism with Atheism.
Back to my original point, it's not an attack on Christianity per se but more so when religion that is too intertwined into Government because faith by its definition is the most important thing. When you have any sort of religious doctrine that is questioned by the breakthroughs in science, even in the 21st century, the teaching of the religion have to be protected and the science questioned or even censored. Like I said, this happens with Climate Change, Evolution and other various stories in the bible that are not possible in the natural world.
Others with their own interest use and hijack these types of debates for their personal gain which holds a country back even further.
The silencing or censorship of science is a giant step away from objective reality and truth and once this happens the Government has failed. If they push science aside in a favour of a view of how they'd like the world to be then they will never be able to form policy that will be successful in the natural world, it's that simple.
This is happening in a big way in the republican party at the moment, and it's a real problem.
Wanting to introduce more religion into the halls of power is a recipe for disaster.
We are lucky here in Australia that there is a clear separation of Church and State, but as we saw under Abbott, that line get's blurred when the individual in office let's his personal faith get in the way of doing his job. There are no such protections in the US despite when their constitution may say. Their money even has "In God we Trust" on it.
The one possibly redeeming move from Putin to some who want to defend Trump is his moves towards accepting Christianity once more, but not only is that not what it seems but it requires one to ignore the well documented atrocities and war crimes that have happened under Putin's watch and the vast corruption from him and his inner circle.
The only reason to hold him up as someone for Trump to emulate is to create a situation to soften the blow for any future findings that show Trump or his team did collude with Russia and Putin to win the election.
